As a political science major at the University of New Haven, you will develop an understanding of our complex political system and its players, and explore how and where you can make an impact.

You will have the opportunity to conduct data-driven projects with well-respected researchers, learn the craft of politics from real policymakers, become a part of the University’s award-winning Model United Nations team, explore the world through our study abroad programs to France, Japan, Germany, and England, and pursue a variety of internships in Washington, D.C., Hartford, and the New Haven area.

Studying political science can open up a wide range of job opportunities in government, business, the nonprofit sector, the legal system, and entrepreneurial occupations. The reason? As a forensic science major at the University of New Haven, you will learn to use science and technology to uncover evidence that can "testify" in court and impact criminal or civil cases. You will sharpen your powers of observation and learn how to identify and interpret such evidence in one of the most respected forensic science programs in the country, a program enthusiastically endorsed by the Forensic Science Education Programs Accreditation Commission (FEPAC).

And, you will have the opportunity to study in the world-renowned Henry C. Lee Institute for Forensic Science. This state-of-the-art center – named after the legendary investigator – features working crime-scene labs and high-tech visual displays, and serves as a go-to resource for law enforcement agencies around the globe.

Here, and in mock crime scenes on campus, our students:

• Learn to interpret physical evidence, provide objective insights, and become adept at the intricate science of forensics
• Use the latest crime-solving resources and equipment while staying up-to-date on continuously changing developments and techniques
• Work in interactive internship programs throughout the U.S. or engage in faculty-mentored research projects
• Develop an uncommon degree of dedication and tenacity as they become part of a legacy started by famed investigator Dr. Henry C. Lee nearly 40 years ago

The 12-credit general concentration allows students to select from a set of courses related to the field of clinical mental health counseling, including courses available in the other concentrations.

Program Outcomes:

• Students will demonstrate competence in all 8 core domains of counseling, as well as the concentration of clinical mental health counseling.
• Students successfully synthesize major theoretical concepts in the core counseling curriculum and their concentration area with their practicum experience.
• Students demonstrate, at a professional level, applied intervention skills in the internship.

The program consists of 60 credits, 48 of which compose the core curriculum completed by all students, and 12 of which constitute one of three concentration areas: general, forensic mental health, or community development.

Music is always being created. But in the ever-evolving relationship between music and commerce, new questions about the commodification of music are being generated, and answers to old questions are being reevaluated:

• How can music effectively attract listeners?
• Where will we find the next generation of artists?
• What are all of the options for monetizing music?
• How do creators get compensated?

The Bachelor of Arts in Music Industry is a dynamic program that provides the intellectual tools to address these questions and presents creative opportunities to learn from professionals to craft the answers. Students take a unique balance of courses that prepare you for technology-driven careers in record company operations, touring and concert promotion, artist management, marketing in the digital realm, music supervision, music publishing, and other industry roles.

Music Is the Means, You Discover the Ends

A degree in Music Industry focuses on business and legal concepts as they apply to the commodification of the art form of music. Our program, in combination with courses from the Pompea College of Business, provides students with a foundation in the economic and creative structures of the music industry and introduces them to the varied possibilities to utilize that knowledge.

We believe that, to apply these practices, students should have significant knowledge of and experience with the art form itself. As such, students have a selection of course options in the theory, practice, performance, and histories of music and the processes and technologies for recording music.

Comprehensive instruction in combination with practical internship opportunities and interactions with industry professionals provides students with the 21st-century background necessary for numerous industry opportunities and for pursuing innovative and entrepreneurial business endeavors.

With a strong emphasis on project-based learning, this unique program was developed for students aspiring for professional growth in managing operations and organizations in the global market by creating a unique blend of state-of-the-art engineering methodologies with key components of business-related topics including finance, marketing, and management theory.

Especially valuable to professional individuals with a number of years of experience in industry and entrepreneurs, applicants are required to hold a four-year baccalaureate degree in engineering or a related field.

Program highlights include:

• Advanced education in the use of scarce resources, managing workforce teams, establishing effective supply chains, assuring high-quality products and services, establishing customer relationships, and planning successful organizational operations
• Business basics such as finance, marketing, and organizational change and development topics
• An accelerated M.S. in Engineering and Operations Management Cohort Program for working professionals with courses in the following formats: (1) meeting one afternoon per week in West Haven and New London, (2) are online, or (3) are hybrid (partially online)
• Exceptional teaching faculty with industry experience

Candidates are required to complete a minimum of 36 credits of graduate work, which may include an internship in national security. Transfer credit from other institutions may be permitted subject to the Graduate School policy on transfer credit detailed elsewhere in this catalog.

Students in the program are required to complete 18 credits of core courses and 18 credits of general electives.  Students must complete a capstone requirement of either NSPS 6693 - National Security Internship I or NSPS 6697 Thesis I and  NSPS 6698 Thesis II. If the six credit thesis option is selected, NSPS 6698  Thesis II will count toward electives.

The Concentrations That Carve Out Your Future Career Path

Our M.S. in Human Resources program offers aspiring leaders three areas of concentration:

• Talent Management. You will create plans to recruit, hire, train, retain, and motivate a diverse and global workforce.
• Organizational Leadership. You will develop advanced interaction skills in working effectively with others as well the change management skills that will make you an influential leader.
• Employee Relations. You will use and apply conflict intervention and negotiation strategies in the management and resolution of workplace disputes.

The tools and machines that mechanical engineers have designed throughout history have lightened our loads, improved our quality of life, and taken us from the far reaches of outer space to the inner workings of minuscule nano devices. In the University of New Haven’s ABET-accredited B.S. in Mechanical Engineering program you will join that long line of pioneers, using your skills to design, analyze, improve, and test the products and systems that are essential to everyday life -- and to create those that don’t yet exist.

Through our program, you’ll build a multidisciplinary foundation in mechanical, chemical, civil, and electrical engineering and develop skills in physics, chemistry, and mathematics as well.

All of it provides the basis for detailed study in mechanical engineering, in which you will:

• Learn to identify, formulate, and solve engineering problems
• Design and conduct experiments, then analyze and interpret data
• Work hands-on in fully equipped, state-of-the-art laboratories
• Master modern techniques, skills, and engineering tools
• Explore the impact of engineering within global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts

The University’s full-time MBA program, which is one of only two in Connecticut – and less than 30 across the U.S. – that offer concentrations that are STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) certified by the federal government, enables you to both master new skills through rigorous coursework and build a portfolio of experience through internships and real-world learning opportunities that will prepare you to excel.

Our program is a great choice for those who’ve recently completed an undergraduate degree or who are looking to continue their education straight out of college. The program’s schedule allows for students to complete the program in as few as 12 months for those who meet the criteria to waive the three business foundation courses, and carry a 12-credit hour load. Students who do not meet the waiver criteria may complete the program in less than two years.

 Marketing and Digital Marketing

This concentration provides students with the technical skills to use digital analytics and managerial prowess to strategically implement marketing decisions related to business operations. It provides the tools necessary to collect, identify, and understand patterns that allow the organization to make informed data-driven decisions regarding the consumer economy. These skills are especially relevant with the continued growth of Big Data and the increasingly sophisticated computing techniques used to mine it. With a specific focus on the application of marketing data analysis, the program features insights in consumer behavior, Big Data, and analytics applied to real-world marketing challenges across various industries. The R-programming language is a central part of the concentration’s design.

The International Business - Economics degree is designed to provide in-depth expertise in the discipline of economics while it concurrently provides students with a broader, global business perspective. Such perspective is essential to operating in today’s increasing complex multi-national business context. The program ensures students have a proficiency in a second language, enhanced socio-cultural awareness and a robust study abroad experience. Today’s business climate is marked by fluid and interconnected financial markets, widely available technological advancements that increase global connectivity, increased international trade, and the emergence of vibrant growing economies in what were formerly considered third world countries. Increased globalization has necessitated that managers have a broad, holistic perspective that incorporates the diverse components of an international business degree. Such a degree will become increasingly valuable as the trends associated with 21st century commerce progress.

Program Outcomes

• Demonstrate ability to convey economic concepts via data visualization.
• Students will evaluate how the cultural and legal differences between the country in which they studied abroad and the U.S. would impact how they operate in that country.
