Work Permit USA

Optional Practical Training or OPT is a period during which students, who have completed their degrees in the USA, are permitted to work for one year on a student visa by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). OPT allows students to work for up to 3 years and develop real-world skills to survive in the competitive jobs market.

It is temporary employment for a period of 12-months that is directly related to the major area of study of an F-1 student. Eligible students have the option to apply for OPT employment authorization before completing their academic studies and/or after completing their academic studies.

A student can participate in three types of Optional Practical Training (OPT):

  1. Pre-Completion OPT: This is temporary employment provided to F-1 students before completion of their course of study.
  2. Post-Completion OPT: This is temporary employment available to F-1 students after completing their course of study.
  3. 24 Month STEM Extension: Students enrolled in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) courses can a 24-month extension after their initial Post-Completion OPT authorization.

The University of New Haven's computer science program is one of the best in the country. Its research, program offerings, multidisciplinary approach, and performance in cyber competitions, among other factors, led to the University being designated as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Operations (CAE-CO) by the National Security Agency. The University is one of only two schools in New England – and 21 in the country – to earn this distinction.

While just about everyone knows how to use a computer, the computer scientist understands how the transfer of information from a computer to a human actually works. Possessing great powers in abstract thinking, they model and analyze computing problems and then design the practical solutions to them. Algorithms? It’s the computer scientist who creates them.

The University of New Haven’s B.S. in Computer Science program will help you develop the strong foundation in mathematics and computing you need to enter this high-demand, ever-evolving field. You’ll tap into your aptitude for problem-solving, hone your ability to think in the abstract, and develop the design skills to solve problems.

As a computer science major you will:

  • Develop the ability to analyze a problem, then identify and define the computing requirements appropriate to its solution
  • Learn to design, implement, and evaluate a computer-based process, system, component, or program to meet specific needs
  • Apply mathematical foundations, algorithmic principles, and computer science theory in the modeling and design of computer-based systems
  • Become proficient in computer hardware, software, and theory, as defined by the Association of Computing Machinery (ACM) curriculum guidelines
  • Learn to work effectively in a variety of contexts, using various languages, systems, and environments
  • Begin to build leadership skills that will help you quickly advance your career
  • Gain hands-on experience through an internship or co-op and an individual programming project
  • Work with cutting-edge technology in state-of-the-art laboratories
  • Be prepared to enter one of the most in-demand career fields in the country
  • Establish the skills you need to be a lifelong independent learner, a requirement for this evolving field

Electrical engineering is concerned with the analysis, design, development, and operation of electrical and electronic systems. Examples of these systems include communication, fiber optics, data processing, power generation, and distribution, control, and instrumentation. Digital circuits and computers are important and integral parts of such systems and are widely used by electrical engineers in their design and development. The electrical engineer is also concerned with the devices that make up systems such as transistors, integrated circuits, rotating machines, antennas, lasers, and computer-memory devices.

Recognizing the changing trend in engineering education, the Electrical Engineering program has adopted a multidisciplinary approach for teaching and learning by incorporating a series of newly developed project-oriented courses based on the spiral curriculum.

The early part of the program emphasizes electrical engineering skills that form the background for the upper-level elective and design courses. Physics, chemistry, mathematics, computer programming, basic engineering science, and general education courses supplement the required and elective electrical engineering courses.

The upper-level electrical engineering course work provides areas of concentration for in-depth study. Students can choose additional technical electives from outside the area of concentration to provide more breadth of knowledge.

An important feature of the electrical engineering curriculum is the design experience. Our students develop the ability to formulate problems, analyze appropriate models, conduct empirical tests, gather relevant information, interpret empirical tests, develop appropriate models, develop alternative solutions, and synthesize in our laboratory sequence. This sequence of courses takes the student in gradual steps from a well-structured laboratory experiment in the sophomore year to an open-ended design project in the senior year. This allows students to gain practical experience in engineering design.

Along with the competencies gained in the electrical engineering major, students may enroll in a cybersecurity concentration.  This concentration provides students the opportunity to be part of the growing workforce of cybersecurity as cybersecurity analysts, engineers, offensive security specialists, responders, and investigators, depending on their course choices.

Music is always being created. But in the ever-evolving relationship between music and commerce, new questions about the commodification of music are being generated, and answers to old questions are being reevaluated:

  • How can music effectively attract listeners?
  • Where will we find the next generation of artists?
  • What are all of the options for monetizing music?
  • How do creators get compensated?

The Bachelor of Arts in Music Industry is a dynamic program that provides the intellectual tools to address these questions and presents creative opportunities to learn from professionals to craft the answers. Students take a unique balance of courses that prepare you for technology-driven careers in record company operations, touring and concert promotion, artist management, marketing in the digital realm, music supervision, music publishing, and other industry roles.

Music Is the Means, You Discover the Ends

A degree in Music Industry focuses on business and legal concepts as they apply to the commodification of the art form of music. Our program, in combination with courses from the Pompea College of Business, provides students with a foundation in the economic and creative structures of the music industry and introduces them to the varied possibilities to utilize that knowledge.

We believe that, to apply these practices, students should have significant knowledge of and experience with the art form itself. As such, students have a selection of course options in the theory, practice, performance, and histories of music and the processes and technologies for recording music.

Comprehensive instruction in combination with practical internship opportunities and interactions with industry professionals provides students with the 21st-century background necessary for numerous industry opportunities and for pursuing innovative and entrepreneurial business endeavors.
