The Master of Public Administration is the most widely accepted and valued professional degree in the field of Public Service. Our MPA program provides students with the core skills and knowledge necessary to be a successful professional in Public Service, as well as offering students an opportunity to complete a concentration in one of five timely areas: 1) Municipal Management, 2) Public Financial Management, 3) Public Safety, 4) Nonprofit Management, and 5) Fire and Emergency Medical Services. Our MPA accommodates the needs of students new to the field as well as those already working in public service. In both cases, we seek students who are motivated to increase their knowledge and gain the skills necessary to take on challenging assignments in public service, particularly at the state and local level.

Program Outcomes:

• Complete and understand the basis for public administration and the development of the public administration paradigm.
• Students should have begun to analyze and interpret real world data and its presentation to an audience.
• Student should be able to judge his/her fit into the organization as well as its internal dynamics.
• Student should be able to handle themselves in a variety of challenging environments.

Candidates are required to complete a minimum of 36 credits of graduate work, which may include an internship in national security. Transfer credit from other institutions may be permitted subject to the Graduate School policy on transfer credit detailed elsewhere in this catalog.

Students in the program are required to complete 18 credits of core courses and 18 credits of general electives.  Students must complete a capstone requirement of either NSPS 6693 - National Security Internship I or NSPS 6697 Thesis I and NSPS 6698 Thesis II.  If the six credit thesis option is selected, NSPS 6698 will count toward electives.

Program Outcomes:

• Develop a working knowledge of the most prominent features national security with an emphasis on the United States’ national security enterprise.
• Acquire a foundational understanding and awareness of issues related to cyber security and information protection.
• Formulate original research through graduate-level thesis or acquire practitioner work experience through an internship.
• Evaluate and design policy solutions to contemporary national security problems.

With a strong emphasis on project-based learning, this unique program was developed for students aspiring for professional growth in managing operations and organizations in the global market by creating a unique blend of state-of-the-art engineering methodologies with key components of business-related topics including finance, marketing, and management theory.

Especially valuable to professional individuals with a number of years of experience in industry and entrepreneurs, applicants are required to hold a four-year baccalaureate degree in engineering or a related field.

Human uses of the marine environment, including fishing, aquaculture, energy development, and tourism, have increased significantly in the past two decades. Coastal areas are highly productive and resource-rich ecosystems and also account for some of the most sought-after real estate in the world. Multiple uses, potentially conflicting interests, and economic and social dependency create ever more complex issues of sustainability, environmental law and policy, and resource management.

With our M.A. in Marine Policy and Management, you will gain the higher-level skills, practical experience, and interdisciplinary knowledge that enable you to thrive in this environment and in the related fields that feed into it.

Fathom the Depths of Human-Marine Dynamics

Through the University of New Haven’s Master of Arts in Marine Policy and Management program, you will acquire a deeper understanding of the complex forces at play in marine-linked human and natural systems. The competencies that you gain in the program — developing and implementing policy and management plans, strategizing for effective public outreach and communication, and highly refined research skills — will make you a vital part of the decision making process on issues of marine natural resource management, policy, and sustainability.

Through this interdisciplinary major, you’ll take courses in political science, economics, national security, legal studies, and history, studying conflict, development, and diplomacy. You will examine the resolutions of international conflicts, the role of inequality as a cause of conflict – and a critical component of its resolution – and explore post-conflict peace-making. While Homeland Security deals with threats from within the U.S., national security combats terrorist threats that come from abroad. As a national security major at the University of New Haven, you will develop the knowledge and skills you will need for a career with the CIA, the FBI, the NSA, the Defense Intelligence Agency, the Department of State, or the Department of Defense. The University of New Haven is one of the few universities in the U.S. where you can pursue this in-demand calling.

Through the renowned Henry C. Lee College of Criminal Justice and Forensic Sciences, you will prepare to work for your country as an intelligence analyst by:

• Developing a proficiency in foreign languages through at least two years of study (Russian, Chinese or Arabic are suggested)

Homeland security and emergency management focuses on protecting the country and responding to – and recovering from – man-made and natural disasters. Our program is extraordinarily unique because it combines two important areas of study into one. This model is what employers are looking for.

We are cross-training students to provide you with a well-rounded picture of what is going on in the world today. We'll instill in you the skills to respond appropriately to these challenges and the ability to navigate complex issues. You can choose to focus your degree in either homeland security or emergency management, or complete both tracks.

In the homeland security track, you'll prepare for careers at the federal, state, or local level by:

• Exploring complex issues of immigration and border security
• Becoming knowledgeable about potential threats to the nation's critical infrastructure
• Studying transportation security and weapons of mass destruction
• Learning to respond to threats of terrorism

In the emergency management track, you will learn to manage and coordinate the multi-agency response to and recovery from man-made and natural disasters by:

• Mastering the tools and methods involved in emergency management
• Learning the principles of fire science technology
• Exploring concepts in hazard risk management, hazard mapping, and modeling

The University of New Haven’s M.S. in Chemistry is a practiced-based program that will enable you to take an integrative approach to solving practical chemistry problems and prepare you to pursue a career in a variety of fields.

You’ll begin by gaining a broad background in chemical theories, computational chemistry methods, analysis of experimental data, design of chemical materials, modern organic chemistry, design of molecular drugs, the design of sustainable chemical processes, and current challenges in the field of chemistry.

In addition to developing an expertise in organic, analytical, and computational chemistry, you’ll take courses in biomedical engineering, civil engineering, computer science, math, and cellular and molecular biology.

The University’s full-time MBA program, which is one of only two in Connecticut – and less than 30 across the U.S. – that offer concentrations that are STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) certified by the federal government, enables you to both master new skills through rigorous coursework and build a portfolio of experience through internships and real-world learning opportunities that will prepare you to excel.

Our program is a great choice for those who’ve recently completed an undergraduate degree or who are looking to continue their education straight out of college. The program’s schedule allows for students to complete the program in as few as 12 months for those who meet the criteria to waive the three business foundation courses, and carry a 12-credit hour load. Students who do not meet the waiver criteria may complete the program in less than two years.

 Business Analytics

The concentration builds technical proficiency in the skills needed to implement and oversee data-driven business decisions, forming inferences and predictions from data, and making optimal and robust decisions. Applications of business analytics span all function areas.

The bachelor’s degree program in Computer Science with a concentration in Cybersecurity is nationally accredited by the Computing Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (CAC/ABET).  Its objectives are to inform, challenge, and train our diverse student body for a constantly changing world of technology. This program develops a solid body of knowledge and understanding of computer hardware, software, and theory, as defined by the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) curriculum guidelines. The concentration in cybersecurity embodies part of the NSA Cyber Operations requirements.

Students enrolled in this concentration will enter the cybersecurity workforce as cybersecurity analysts, engineers, offensive security specialists, responders, and investigators, depending on their course choices.
