The MA in Language, Literature, and Translation (MALLT) is an interdisciplinary MA degree program focused on global languages, literatures and translation. With over 50 faculty from five different departments, MALLT offers a flexible program of study tailored to your professional goals. Three departments—French, Italian and Comparative Literature, Foreign Languages and Literature and Translation & Interpreting Studies cooperate in offering this interdepartmental, interdisciplinary master’s program designed for the student who wishes to focus on language, literature, and translation on a cross-cultural basis.

Being bilingual is not enough to be a successful translator. Professional translators must be experts in both source and target cultures, skilled readers of the source language and superb writers of the target language. In addition, they need expertise in an area of specialization and a solid grasp of the language-services industry.

Our Translation & Interpreting Studies programs are housed in an accredited, Tier 1 Research institution and offer professional translator and interpreter training in a dynamic environment. Students collaborate with faculty and classmates from around the world to develop the skills they need to succeed in a thriving international market. Learn how to translate and/or interpret, and how to be a language professional through using leading industry computer-assisted translation tools and completing internships that often lead to employment. Religious studies is an interdisciplinary major that draws on courses from multiple departments to give students a broad understanding of the historical, cultural and philosophical principles of the world's religions, including Buddhism, Christianity, Classical Greek and Roman religions, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, African and Native-American religions. These diverse belief systems are studied not just for their influence over past generations but also to better understand their role in modern issues.

Religious Studies is not just for students planning to go on to become a priest, rabbi or minister. The program provides excellent preparation for all careers that require critical thinking, logic, analysis and writing skills. Because of the breadth of the subject matter, students graduate with a global perspective, an appreciation for different viewpoints and substantive knowledge about ethics and core belief systems of the past and present.

UWM's Global Studies program combines the benefits of a liberal arts education with the training of a professional program to prepare students to work internationally or domestically on matters that cross borders and cultures. The College of Letters and Science and several of UWM's professional schools have formed a partnership to offer students this unique program of study that will prepare them for positions of global leadership in our increasingly interconnected world.

At UWM, Global Studies is a rigorous degree program incorporating classes across disciplines, including an extensive foreign language requirement. This challenging and rewarding program prepares students to excel in a job market that demands knowledge across subject areas and a culturally sensitive approach. The analytical, communication, cultural knowledge and language skills acquired through the Global Studies degree will serve students well in any area of work.

Global Studies students choose from one of five tracks:

• Global Communications - with a focus on language, culture and the technology of modern, global communication (option for a joint degree between the College of Letters and Science and the School of Information Studies)
• Global Management - focusing on business and the world economy (joint degree between the College of Letters and Science and the Sheldon B. Lubar School of Business)
• Global Security - dealing with aspects of conflict and change such as water resources, war, human rights, borders, and global health
• Global Sustainability - where students develop expertise in matters of the environment and government systems
• Global Health - a track for students interested in global careers in healthcare, international aid, healthcare policy, international health education, health outreach, and international health regulations (option for a joint degree between the College of Letters and Science and the College of Nursing)

Human resource (HR) managers play an essential and strategic role in helping organizations recruit, train and retain an effective workforce. HR managers understand people and help organizations create an inclusive and productive workforce by providing performance and talent management systems; offering training, career development and work-life programs; and by creating effective compensation and benefits packages. HR managers also help organizations develop effective leaders and teams and proactively work with top-management to build inclusive and positive organizational cultures. Effective HR managers are skilled in interpersonal communication, conflict resolution, diversity management, and perspective-taking.

The BFA: Winds, Brass, and Percussion program is designed to prepare students for professional performing careers and studio teaching. The goal of the program is to graduate students who are expert performers and knowledgeable music scholars.  Students take private lessons and master classes; and perform solo recitals, chamber music, orchestral music, and wind band music while working on their degrees.

By using high-frequency sound waves or ultrasound, sonographers produce images of soft tissue and blood flow to assist with the diagnostic process or administration of therapeutic application. Sonography is used to examine the abdomen, breast tissue, female reproductive system, urinary system, heart, and blood vessels. In addition, sound waves are used to guide fine-needle biopsy. Diagnostic Medical Sonography students complete the first two years of prerequisite courses on campus before applying for placement into the professional education portion of the curriculum. Once accepted into the professional education component of the program, students will take didactic and clinical education courses concurrently. Upon successful completion of the Bachelor of Science degree, students are eligible to write the national board exams offered through the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (www.ardms.org). The Diagnostic Medical Sonography professional education program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (www.caahep.org) upon recommendation of the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography.

The Master of Science in Biostatistics program provides an innovative curriculum to meet a range of professional needs and interests. The program trains students in study design, appropriate use of statistical and computational techniques, and interpretation of data analysis results arising from public health and biomedical research. Students learn both classical and modern statistical methods and apply their statistical skills and knowledge to solve "big data” problems. They have the opportunity to work with faculty on cutting edge research projects, such as discovering genetic causes of common diseases, developing statistical algorithms to monitor treatment efficacy, and reducing medical costs through electronic health record.

The Master of Science in Engineering program is a flexible program designed to meet the needs of a wide variety of students. The program can be a stepping-stone on the way to further studies and the pursuit of advanced research, such as can be obtained by pursuing the PhD. Or the program can provide a pathway to professional advancement through greater technical knowledge and intellectual maturity. The student, with the help and approval of a major advisor, can choose from a wide range of courses from throughout the College of Engineering and Applied Science (CEAS), and where appropriate, from other schools and colleges.

The charge of the Voice Area is to teach skills for future success in music, to offer solid vocal technique and knowledge of vocal health. This training is built upon a foundation of history, theory, and a varied repertoire of vocal music. A spirit of genuine collaboration both within and outside of the voice area offers experiences in many musical styles, fostering future performers, pedagogues and leaders in the arts.

Students of history do not just memorize the past. They ask questions about the past in order to solve problems of the present.

History is an original liberal arts field and is designed to prepare students for any type of profession that emphasizes critical analysis, reading of dense texts, creative problem-solving, and oral and written communication. History majors collect and analyze evidence to construct arguments, propose new interpretations, formulate conclusions, test hypotheses, and communicate new ideas.

There is no typical job for a history major. Our graduates can be found in all types of companies and in all types of roles, as well as graduate programs in history and other related humanities and social science fields. A student's career choices after college is often guided by how they applied their coursework to real world applications during college. Internships, part-time jobs, and volunteer experiences will help a student network during college and shape their career choices after graduation. The possibilities are numerous, and all students are encouraged to gain practical experience that complements the major.

At UWM, undergraduates can work on research projects such as the Encyclopedia of Milwaukee. The opportunity to participate in research as an undergraduate is a distinct advantage for UWM students. At most large, research universities, research opportunities for undergraduates are limited; there are fewer of them and they often are reserved for juniors or seniors. At UWM, you can get involved as early as freshman year. Students work directly with faculty and graduate students on their current research projects, and sometimes find themselves published in a peer-reviewed journal right alongside the faculty member. Participating in undergraduate research is an excellent way to enhance your resume for graduate school or employment.
