The Master of Science in Engineering program is a flexible program designed to meet the needs of a wide variety of students. The program can be a stepping-stone on the way to further studies and the pursuit of advanced research, such as can be obtained by pursuing the PhD. Or the program can provide a pathway to professional advancement through greater technical knowledge and intellectual maturity. The student, with the help and approval of a major advisor, can choose from a wide range of courses from throughout the College of Engineering and Applied Science (CEAS), and where appropriate, from other schools and colleges.

The study of Philosophy can be challenging because it asks students to critically examine very fundamental questions about what it means to be human - behavior, values, ethics, logic, aesthetics. Some describe it as "thinking in slow motion" because of the way it explores in depth the human experience.

Students choose philosophy because it instills a lifelong love and quest for knowledge, it imparts a disciplined and systematic way of thinking, and it enhances critical and analytical capacities. Most graduates of philosophy describe the great personal reward that comes from exploring the great thinkers of the past in the context of modern issues. But, they also passionately value the career skills that they developed - how to read and comprehend difficult text; how to understand different interpretations of information and assess opposing viewpoints; how to craft a clear and logical position on an issue in writing and orally; and how to make connections between smaller, seemingly disparate details and the big picture.

Actuarial science is the quantitative analysis of risk. In addition to mathematics and statistics courses, students in actuarial science take classes in finance, economics, and computer programming.  

What Do Actuaries Do?
Actuaries help individuals, businesses and society manage risk by evaluating the likelihood of future events and creating plans to reduce the negative financial or emotional impact of undesirable events. Some of the questions that actuaries address on a daily basis include:

• What price best balances an insurance company’s risk tolerance with various risk parameters such as age of the insured, health status, place of residence, and other risk characteristics?
• What would be the economic loss in the event of a flood, and how can these costs be covered?
• How large a fund is needed for a company to provide pensions for its employees?
• How likely is it for someone to be hospitalized? What is the average duration of a hospital stay, and how can the costs associated with each day of hospitalization be provided for?
• In the event of a merger, how can the employee benefits plans of the different organizations be reconciled?
• How should an investment portfolio be balanced to maximize return and minimize risk?
• Actuaries also must take this information and convey it to their companies and customers clearly and concisely through written reports, graphs, charts, or other visual or oral presentation formats.

The Master of Science in Biostatistics program provides an innovative curriculum to meet a range of professional needs and interests. The program trains students in study design, appropriate use of statistical and computational techniques, and interpretation of data analysis results arising from public health and biomedical research. Students learn both classical and modern statistical methods and apply their statistical skills and knowledge to solve "big data” problems. They have the opportunity to work with faculty on cutting edge research projects, such as discovering genetic causes of common diseases, developing statistical algorithms to monitor treatment efficacy, and reducing medical costs through electronic health record.

The Cognitive and Developmental Sciences concentration provides students with the psychological foundations of education. The program emphasizes the perspective of the learner and concentrates on the following content areas: cognition, development, and social. The program focuses on research skills as they apply to education and training, throughout the lifespan, in a broad range of settings.

Everyone is part of multiple social groups. Your local community, your ethnic group, your religious organization, your state, your club or team—these are all examples of groups to which you might belong. The Sociology major at UWM offers students a chance to better understand these groups and the people within them. Students explore the social causes and consequences of human behavior, including topics such as political movements, population shifts, housing patterns, racism, gender inequality, the legal system, the medical profession, crime, families, sexuality, workplace organization, food cultures, and more.

Our program provides an intensive opportunity to develop formal and technical skills, balanced with conceptual and material exploration. Students are encouraged to search for answers to questions about the relevance and position painting holds in contemporary art practice, its relation to global visual culture, and today's information-age and multi-cultural environments.

Accountants gather, organize and analyze financial information. Advancements in technology, evolving accounting rules and regulations, and rapid globalization promise abundant and interesting career opportunities to those with strong quantitative abilities. In response to the rapidly changing environment, this degree is tailored to develop supplemental skills in Information Technology and analyzing data.

Accounting-Data Analysis graduates seek employment in a variety of positions in public accounting firms, industry, and not-for-profits. For public accounting firms, these graduates may find employment in either the traditional assurance track or the more IT-oriented risk advisory track. In either case, these graduates will analyze large, client-prepared datasets to accomplish audit objectives for their assigned audit team. In an industry employment position, the graduates will work as part of the management team providing information for decision support, taxation issues and performance evaluation. In the not-for-profit sector, the graduates will also analyze data to assist their organizations in decision support and performance evaluation. This accounting track specifically develops skills in Information Technology to enable graduates to utilize data analysis and visualization in these tasks.

The STEM-Designated MS in Management - Finance Analysis concentration includes extensive study of financial markets to prepare students for professional careers in corporate and investment finance. The curriculum includes an examination of capital markets, investment banking, financial institutions, corporate financial control, securities valuation techniques, capital budgeting, portfolio strategies, hedging and arbitrage, and international fund management.

The program provides students with foundational training in accounting and statistical analysis and in-depth finance skill sets necessary to understand and meet the growing needs of financial industries and prepares students for the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) exams.

This concentration is designed for the music student who wishes to concentrate primarily on the major performing skill.

Applicant proposing concentration in Music Performance Vocal Emphasis must demonstrate outstanding performance skills. An on-site audition is required; in extreme cases, recorded examples of an applicant’s performance may be accepted in lieu of an in-person audition. Applicant should contact faculty in the appropriate performance area to inquire about specific audition repertoire and procedures.
