Women's and Gender Studies is a discipline that critically examines gender and women's issues from an interdisciplinary perspective and challenges many traditional assumptions and theories. It examines the practice and expression of gender in different societies and at different historical moments.

Regardless of your gender, Women's and Gender Studies is crucial and relevant for anyone interested in working in criminal justice, social work, the non-profit sector, the arts, politics, business, and more. Students learn to look at the world and history through different perspectives and think about how gender and our perceptions of it impact culture, society, and daily interactions. It is a traditional liberal arts discipline where the knowledge and skills developed in the program can be applied to all types of career paths. Work experiences during college through internships, part-time jobs, and volunteer positions often shape career paths after graduation.

Real Estate Development
A concentration in real estate development provides a focused course of study for Master of Architecture and/or Master of Urban Planning students who wish to pursue careers in real estate development in combination with professional architectural practice or work with a private or public developer.

This concentration is designed for the music student with an undergraduate degree in piano who wishes to specialize as a collaborative pianist in performance and repertoire. A student must successfully pass an audition that demonstrates an advanced level of collaborative skill to qualify for admission to the program.

Applicant proposing concentration in Music Performance Keyboard must demonstrate outstanding performance skills. An on-site audition is required; in extreme cases, recorded examples of an applicant’s performance may be accepted in lieu of an in-person audition. Applicant should contact faculty in the appropriate performance area to inquire about specific audition repertoire and procedures.

Our competitive performance programs are led by renowned performing artist faculty. Students regularly perform as soloists, chamber musicians, and orchestral musicians while earning their degree. They are prepared for modern, multifaceted professional careers as performers and/or teachers. The program offers a thorough grounding in instrumental technique and repertory, and broad and continuous experience in performance.

The Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders offers a program of graduate study which prepares students for careers as speech-language pathologists in public schools, hospitals, rehabilitation centers, nursing homes, and university training programs. The program typically takes 2 calendar years to complete. Students usually prepare for service delivery in both school and healthcare clinical settings to maximize career flexibility. Occasionally, students may choose to focus career preparation on just one type of setting.

UWM graduates who earn the MA in Translation and Interpreting Studies in any of the above forms reflect sufficient preparation for gainful post-graduation employment or admission to a doctor of philosophy program at a peer or aspirational institutions, and they will:

• Be knowledgeable about the linguistic, literary, and cultural productions of their source and target communities in the past and present; be able to situate them within a historical, cultural and discursive (interdisciplinary and/or cross-cultural) context; be familiar with several major tendencies in critical and theoretical analysis, and be able to apply them to the study of these texts.
• Provide nuanced and sophisticated discussions (in writing and in conversation) of linguistic, literary, and cultural works in English, and when appropriate, in the target language of their field of study. This includes the ability to analyze and to incorporate critical/theoretical frameworks into their written and oral discussions of literary or cultural works.
• Be able to perform professional skills tied to the translation and interpreting field (e.g., translate/interpret accurately in their area of specialization; create and maintain terminology database resources; efficiently and accurately conduct research related to TandI; understand broad aspects of the TandI industry).
• Conduct independent research in Translation and Interpreting Studies. This includes the ability to develop and delimit a research question, to conduct a systematic investigation of the question, and to present or evaluate research according to standard models of analysis and argumentation.
• Be aware of career and post-graduate opportunities that their degree makes possible, which includes knowing how to search and apply for professional opportunities or advanced study related to the MA, and participating in professional activities such as colloquia, conferences, and meetings.

In the Comparative Literature major, students examine literature across languages, geographic location, time periods, and genres. The discipline also explores the relationship between literature and other forms of cultural expression such as pop culture, technology, arts, music, or film, as well as the relationship between literature and other academic disciplines, like anthropology, history, religious studies, or women's and gender studies. It's a great major for anyone who loves to explore other cultures.

Students sometimes ask whether they need to be fluent in a foreign language in order to study comparative literature. Definitely not! While all of UWM's instructors and faculty in comparative literature do research in other languages, all Comparative Literature courses are taught entirely in English. Comparative Literature majors choose one of two paths - one path that requires some literature courses be taken in a foreign language program, or another path where all classes are taught in English.

The MA in Language, Literature, and Translation (MALLT) is an interdisciplinary MA degree program focused on global languages, literatures and translation. With over 50 faculty from five different departments, MALLT offers a flexible program of study tailored to your professional goals. Three departments—French, Italian and Comparative Literature, Foreign Languages and Literature and Translation & Interpreting Studies cooperate in offering this interdepartmental, interdisciplinary master’s program designed for the student who wishes to focus on language, literature, and translation on a cross-cultural basis.
