Welcome to the Chemistry Department's Graduate Program at Wright State University, Dayton, Ohio! As faculty members, we look forward to working with you as you continue your education in the field of chemistry. You will find the graduate education experience at Wright State University an interesting and exciting transition from student to independent scientist. Graduate students begin this program by taking courses in Chemistry very much as they did as undergraduates. Upon the completion of this program, the student will present a thesis describing their own research, which contributes to the body of new knowledge in chemistry. Actually, the progress is not the simple progression that the foregoing statement might imply. This program takes approximately two years of hard work, and while you are taking courses, usually you will be serving as a teaching assistant for undergraduate courses. The experience and knowledge you obtain in this program will remain with you always. A productive chemist never loses the attitude of an inquiring student.

The Department of Chemistry offers a research-based program of study in two dedicated Master of Science (M.S.) degree programs. The M.S. degree in Chemistry is available with research concentrations in the traditional areas of Analytical, Inorganic, Organic, and Physical & Theoretical Chemistry as well as in Environmental, Polymer & Materials and Bioorganic Synthetic Chemistry and in Chemical Education.

The urban affairs major is right for you if you want to make communities better places to live, if you want to fix problems such as vacant housing, decaying infrastructure, access to healthy food, ensuring safe neighborhoods, reducing homelessness, city planning, economic development, and equal education and job opportunities for future generations.

In the 1960s, national foundations asked universities to create teams of faculty from diverse disciplines, such as political science, sociology, geography, and economics, to solve the nation’s urban problems. These initiatives led to new social programs, new curriculum, and new academic degrees. The first Wright State urban affairs major graduated in 1971 and this major remains a strong reflection of Wright State's commitment to contribute to healthy, sustainable communities in our region and beyond.

The urban affairs major prepares you for professional positions in a broad range of fields, including government, nonprofit organizations, and private sector businesses.

Students graduating with the B.A. in urban affairs will be able to:

• Apply analytical tools to analyze problems relevant to the public sector or the nonprofit sector.
• Use critical thinking skills to analyze and evaluate local, national, or global political, legal, or social issues.
• Communicate effectively in writing.
• Demonstrate an understanding of the value of diversity and multicultural competence in today's global environment.

In today’s business environment, graduates skilled in creative problem solving and risk taking with the ability to see new opportunities are in high demand. An entrepreneurship degree will help you learn those skills and equip you with the experiences necessary to succeed in a business environment or start your own venture.

If you are eager to learn, customer focused, creative, and have strong technical, planning, and organizational abilities, majoring in entrepreneurship can benefit you in nearly any career field or industry.

Program Outcomes
If you complete this program, you will graduate with a Bachelor in Business with a major in entrepreneurship. This multidisciplinary program’s courses focus on starting, financing, commercializing, and managing a new business. Students learn to evaluate and plan new business opportunities, research and write comprehensive business plans, and learn additional skills in market analysis, problem solving, return on investment principles, team building, and planning.

Help design your own degree program—one broad in scope, narrow in concentration, and flexible enough to draw courses from all of the departments and programs in the College of Liberal Arts. The liberal studies degree is ideal if your interests encompass more than one liberal arts field and you desire greater flexibility in your program. If you want to change your major but still graduate in a timely manner, or if you are a transfer student who might benefit from an interdisciplinary curriculum, consider liberal studies.

The Bachelor of Science degree from the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology focuses on preparing students for careers in fields including, but not limited to, medicine and health, drug manufacturing and design, agriculture, forensic science (crime lab science), academic/industrial research and development, and scientific writing.

The teaching and research programs of the department are conducted in modern, well-equipped classrooms and laboratories. Our curriculum fosters the development of active learning, teamwork, critical thinking, scientific reasoning and communication skills, as well as, relevant content knowledge in both biochemistry and molecular biology. Within the curriculum there are many opportunities for students to be associated with cutting-edge research through independent studies and undergraduate research projects.

The Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering offers a graduate program leading to a Master of Science in Engineering (M.S.) in materials science and engineering and a Ph.D. in Engineering with a focus in materials and nanotechnology. The graduate programs are broad in scope, emphasizing the interdisciplinary nature of the field of materials science and engineering. The program is built around processing, structure, properties, and performance of advanced materials relevant to numerous areas of application, such as biomedical, energy, aerospace, environmental, and manufacturing.

The Bachelor of Science curriculum offers a broad, integrated, and in-depth approach to the life sciences. Departmental requirements consist of a balanced core of courses selected from several subject areas, combined with elective courses from the Department of Biological Sciences and other life science departments such as Neuroscience, Cell Biology and Physiology, and Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. This degree program can accommodate students with such differing interests and objectives as graduate work in molecular biology, laboratory work in microbiology, or field work in ecology. The B.S. degree also can serve as preprofessional preparation for programs such as medical, dental, or veterinary sciences, or for education licensure.

Biological Sciences Program Learning Objectives

• Students completing a Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences will be able to:
• Demonstrate proficiency in the knowledge of essential concepts of biology at molecular, organismal, and ecosystem scales.
• Demonstrate proficiency in the knowledge of concepts in chemistry and physics necessary to understand the foundations of biology.
• Utilize mathematics and statistics to apply quantitative reasoning to biological concepts.
• Evaluate data using quantitative analysis and graphical representation.
• Apply observational strategies, formulate testable hypotheses, and design experiments with appropriate controls and variables.
• Exhibit problem solving skills and trouble-shoot procedures.
• Effectively communicate biological concepts and interpretations to varied audiences orally and in writing.
• Discuss the ethical implications of biological understanding and discoveries.

Electrical engineers make big dreams into reality—in the areas of alternative energy, wireless communications, electronic surveillance, computing technology, and semiconductor devices. Electrical engineers are at the forefront of technological advances. Imagine being part of a team that uses a CCD array to create an artificial retina, or a non-tethered pacemaker the size of a vitamin pill. How about developing an alternative-energy system to give a rural homestead power and wireless access, or designing the next generation of autonomous vehicles that conserve energy, plan routes and eliminate collisions? Closer to home, you can imagine a system that monitors your grandmother’s health, automatically administers her medication, and communicates remotely with care providers to allow her to live safely and with confidence in her own home.

Our graduate Electrical Engineering program is highly respected within the industry, and we have placed hundreds of graduates with major international corporations and research institutions. Students have the opportunity to conduct research in many areas, including robotics, VLSI circuit design, power electronics, microwave theory, control theory, sensor data fusion, and digital signal and image processing.

A degree in economics provides you with a solid foundation for a career in business, government, or nonprofit sector. Economists are vital in helping predict and study responses to changes in policy and the market and our program boasts a placement rate or nearly 100 percent in occupations requiring a master’s degree. You will study research methods and how social factors influence and shape our economy and apply those analytical skills to working in business, government, and nonprofit sectors.

This program develops professional economists who can solve contemporary problems with a unique skill set created by a curriculum that bridges the gap between research and the application of research. Our curriculum stresses applied research using traditional and nontraditional methods and takes advantage of our faculty’s diverse teaching and research activities. You are encouraged to develop and evaluate new approaches to economic problem solving while building the skills to work in business, government, and nonprofit sectors or continue your education.

If you complete this program, you will graduate with a Master of Science in Social and Applied Economics. This graduate program equips you to solve contemporary economic problems with a unique set of skills created by a curriculum that combines applied economics with social economics. This program bridges the gap between research and the application of research in business, government, and nonprofit sectors. In this program, you will be encouraged to develop and evaluate new approaches to economic problem solving.
