The Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences offers two master’s degree programs-the Master of Science and Master of Science in Teaching (Earth Science). The Master of Science program prepares students for careers as professional earth scientists in industry, government, or education, or for continued graduate study. Current research focus areas of the department include Aquatic Biogeochemistry, Hydrogeology, Geophysics, Geospatial Analysis and Remote Sensing, Complex Earth Processes, Paleoecology and Sedimentary Environments, and Earth Science Education. The department is widely recognized for its applied and multidisciplinary programs and maintains a strong emphasis on practical field applications.

The Bachelor of Technical and Applied Studies (BTAS) is a completion degree offered through the Lake Campus of Wright State University. It is intended for students who have already completed a two-year degree program or equivalent from an accredited community college, regional campus or technical college, and who wish to pursue a baccalaureate degree. The program(s) of study provides students with knowledge, skills, and dispositions necessary for advancement in their chosen careers, and integrates technical skills developed within applied associate degree programs with professional skills intrinsic in a bachelor’s degree program.

Classics is the study of the cultures of ancient Greece and Rome. Both cultures have had a profound influence on life in the western world, especially in the areas of language and literature, art and architecture, politics and religion, science and philosophy. The Classics department at Wright State offers classes in most of these areas.

The Latin major allows students to focus primarily on the study of Latin language, literature, and culture. Students are required to take 7 semesters of Latin language. Additional electives cover courses in a diverse range of subjects relating to the study of the Classical world.

Students interested in teaching Latin major in Latin and enroll in the Latin Licensure program, which the Classics Department offers in conjunction with Wright State’s College of Education and Human Services.

Program Outcomes
Students in the Latin program will:

• Acquire knowledge of the history, literature, and culture of ancient Rome
• Acquire a reading knowledge of Latin
• Acquire strong critical thinking skills
• Acquire effective communication and writing skills

Computer scientists do not just design software for computers. They work with the software and software systems that allow the day-to-day use of any computing system. Concepts and theory are the focus of this major.

Program Outcomes
Students who complete the B.S. in computer science will have an ability to:

• Analyze a complex computing problem and to apply principles of computing and other relevant disciplines to identify solutions.
• Design, implement, and evaluate a computing-based solution to meet a given set of computing requirements in the context of the program’s discipline.
• Communicate effectively in a variety of professional contexts.
• Recognize professional responsibilities and make informed judgments in computing practice based on legal and ethical principles.
• Function effectively as a member or leader of a team engaged in activities appropriate to the program’s discipline.
• Apply computer science theory and software development fundamentals to produce computing-based solutions

The Department of Biological Sciences is home to 22 active research faculty and approximately 50 graduate students. Our faculty are currently funded by EPA, NIH, NSF, USDA, a variety of state and local agencies, and private foundations. Many faculty members have leadership roles in local, state, national and international organizations, including the American Physiological Society, American Society for Testing of Materials, International Standards Organization, the Nature Conservancy, the Ohio Plant Biotechnology Consortium and the Society for Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry. They also served on EPA, NIH, and NSF study sections and review panels and are otherwise recognized as experts in their field.

You will grasp basic principles of the structure, design, and language of music in its historical and cultural contexts while studying music history and literature at Wright State. You can better understand the music you hear, perform, and create. This major is not a terminal degree, and you should expect to continue at the graduate level. Please consult with the appropriate faculty advisor before entering this program.

In today’s business environment, graduates skilled in creative problem solving and risk taking with the ability to see new opportunities are in high demand. An entrepreneurship degree will help you learn those skills and equip you with the experiences necessary to succeed in a business environment or start your own venture.

If you are eager to learn, customer focused, creative, and have strong technical, planning, and organizational abilities, majoring in entrepreneurship can benefit you in nearly any career field or industry.

Program Outcomes
If you complete this program, you will graduate with a Bachelor in Business with a major in entrepreneurship. This multidisciplinary program’s courses focus on starting, financing, commercializing, and managing a new business. Students learn to evaluate and plan new business opportunities, research and write comprehensive business plans, and learn additional skills in market analysis, problem solving, return on investment principles, team building, and planning.

Studying one of the modern languages at Wright State will help you improve your ability to read, write, and speak in another language, study how that language is used in a social context, and become a more enlightened citizen. You will also learn about the history, politics, culture, media, and literature of your chosen country and study their economic and educational systems.

New technologies have increased global opportunities, and studying a modern language prepares you to work with people all over the world. Government and non-governmental agencies have discovered a critical need for college graduates with foreign language skills.

African and African American Studies (AAFS) is an innovative interdisciplinary program in the College of Liberal Arts that offers you the opportunity to explore the experiences of people in Africa and the African Diaspora (the spread of people of African descent throughout the world), including the United States, Latin America, the Caribbean, and Asia. The mission of the AAFS program is to provide you with a rigorous education that will enable you to become a productive citizen committed to using your learning to better understand the world you live in and also find ways to improve it.

You will investigate the culture and contributions of Africans and African Americans to world civilizations and cultures. You will also be able to develop a global view, essential for living in an increasingly diverse society.

The objective of the accountancy major is to educate students for professional careers in public, industrial, governmental, and not-forprofit accounting. To this end, the program provides a broad educational experience for students and gives them a background for completing professional accounting examinations such as the CIA (Certified Internal Auditor) and CMA (Certified Management Accountant). Accountancy majors may consider a minor in either management information systems or computing and information technology. Contact an advisor in computer science for details on the CIT minor. Students interested in financial management are encouraged to complete a series of accountancy and finance courses designed to prepare them for the CFM (Certified Financial Manager) exam. This major also provides an excellent undergraduate background for a degree in law.

Students who plan to take the CPA (Certified Public Accountant) exam should pursue the Master of Accountancy program upon completion of the bachelor program in order to meet the education requirements of the Accountancy Board of Ohio.

Transfer students who major in accountancy should note that at least 20 credit hours of their accountancy courses must be taken at Wright State.

The department has a chapter of Beta Alpha Psi, the national accountancy honorary fraternity.
