Crime and justice studies (CJS) is an interdisciplinary and incredibly varied field of study. Knowledge specific to the discipline relies upon research from fields as varied as sociology, law, history, psychology, and political science. It encompasses analysis of federal, state, and local entities that seek to understand, control, and deter crime. The principal agencies charged with these responsibilities are law enforcement, the judiciary, and corrections. More fundamentally, however, crime and justice studies examines questions of social justice—concerns related to equality, fairness, freedom, security, and social order. If you are interested in understanding the causes, responses, and consequences of crime for the individual as well as the larger society, consider this program.

Crime and justice studies is a liberal arts degree and therefore, our focus is on providing you with a well-rounded, critically engaged, and scientifically informed understanding of the field. While practical experience is a vital component of our curriculum, our larger mission is that, when you graduate, you will be an innovator and leader in your chosen occupations and will utilize scientific reasoning and sharply honed analytical skills on your path to success. You will be prepared for positions in a variety of occupations, including local and federal law enforcement, probation and parole, civil, criminal and juvenile courts, research, corrections, teaching, forensics, and a variety of other fields.

While crime and justice studies is an exciting and challenging major, it is not for everyone. Unfortunately, if you have a prior criminal record or a drug or alcohol dependency it will be difficult for you to obtain employment in the field once you graduate. Further, it is a field that generally requires not only keen analytic and technical skills but also the ability to empathize, establish strong interpersonal boundaries, and, most importantly, maintain fundamental respect for the rights and dignity of others.

In today’s business environment, graduates skilled in creative problem solving and risk taking with the ability to see new opportunities are in high demand. An entrepreneurship degree will help you learn those skills and equip you with the experiences necessary to succeed in a business environment or start your own venture.

If you are eager to learn, customer focused, creative, and have strong technical, planning, and organizational abilities, majoring in entrepreneurship can benefit you in nearly any career field or industry.

Program Outcomes
If you complete this program, you will graduate with a Bachelor in Business with a major in entrepreneurship. This multidisciplinary program’s courses focus on starting, financing, commercializing, and managing a new business. Students learn to evaluate and plan new business opportunities, research and write comprehensive business plans, and learn additional skills in market analysis, problem solving, return on investment principles, team building, and planning.

A degree in marketing allows you to choose from a broad selection of courses that will prepare you for a sustainable, successful career. With only three required courses, you can build a program customized to your career goals. We also offer an emerging leaders program that will provide you with additional learning opportunities.

Program Outcomes
The marketing program prepares you to work in both business-to-business and business-to-consumer organization. You will learn about the motivations and behaviors and motivations of consumers, how to impact those behaviors, and how to satisfy your costumers sustainably. Learn to create, communicate, and sell, with a thorough foundation in global issues, digital technologies, and data insights. We will teach you how to apply the marketing concepts and planning taught in the classroom in real-world situations.

The thesis option is for students who need or desire the full range of professional experience, including intensive research and writing. This option assures training in research techniques and in the preparation of scholarly papers. It culminates in the preparation and defense of a thesis based on original research. The student's program of study is an initiation into methods of focused study and research in a selected area of physiology or neuroscience.

The course option allows the student to plan a program of study that, along with the degree requirements, satisfies his or her educational needs and career objectives. This might be to extend knowledge for a current position, or as preparation for one of many health professions. The student's program of study typically culminates with two scientific writing courses broadly in the areas of Physiology and/or Neuroscience.

The Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering offers a program of graduate study leading to a Master of Science in Engineering (M.S.) degree with a major in Renewable and Clean Energy. This increasingly critical field of engineering focuses on alternative energy technologies that hold promise of becoming a substantial source of energy for the United States. The Renewable and Clean Energy program includes courses on many types of alternative energy systems, in addition to courses on fundamental concepts related to energy. Included in this program are courses on fuel cells, solar energy, wind power, hydrogen fuel, energy conversion, energy materials, energy efficiency, thermodynamics, etc. The intent of this program is to train the next generation of renewable and clean energy engineers and to develop research in the area of renewable and clean energies.

A degree in economics provides you with a solid foundation for a career in business, government, or nonprofit sector. Economists are vital in helping predict and study responses to changes in policy and the market and our program boasts a placement rate or nearly 100 percent in occupations requiring a master’s degree. You will study research methods and how social factors influence and shape our economy and apply those analytical skills to working in business, government, and nonprofit sectors.

This program develops professional economists who can solve contemporary problems with a unique skill set created by a curriculum that bridges the gap between research and the application of research. Our curriculum stresses applied research using traditional and nontraditional methods and takes advantage of our faculty’s diverse teaching and research activities. You are encouraged to develop and evaluate new approaches to economic problem solving while building the skills to work in business, government, and nonprofit sectors or continue your education.

This graduate program equips you to solve contemporary economic problems with a unique set of skills created by a curriculum that combines applied economics with social economics. This program bridges the gap between research and the application of research in business, government, and nonprofit sectors. In this program, you will be encouraged to develop and evaluate new approaches to economic problem solving.

Industrial and systems engineers work in one of the broadest fields of engineering. Industrial engineers are sometimes called “productivity people” and “efficiency experts”—when it comes to quality control, you are the pro.

Industrial and systems engineering (ISE) focuses on doing more with less—doing things better, cheaper, faster, more safely, and with less waste. Instead of designing bridges, machines, or circuits, industrial engineers will engineer all parts of a process—people, machines, materials, information, and energy—to make a product or provide a service.

The following student outcomes of the industrial and systems engineering program will prepare graduates to attain the program educational objectives:

• An ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors

Help design your own degree program—one broad in scope, narrow in concentration, and flexible enough to draw courses from all of the departments and programs in the College of Liberal Arts. The liberal studies degree is ideal if your interests encompass more than one liberal arts field and you desire greater flexibility in your program. Course work in the Bachelor of Arts in Earth and Environmental Sciences, Earth Sciences Concentration program combines lecture, lab, and field experiences with geology and the broader earth sciences, which include subjects such as water, soils, and atmosphere. Students pursuing the B.A. have wide latitude in their choice of coursework that allows them to supplement required courses with a broad sampling of other courses or to earn an additional credential such as a second major, a minor, or a certificate program.

The Bachelor of Technical and Applied Studies (BTAS) is a completion degree offered through the Lake Campus of Wright State University. It is intended for students who have already completed a two-year degree program or equivalent from an accredited community college, regional campus or technical college, and who wish to pursue a baccalaureate degree. The program(s) of study provides students with knowledge, skills, and dispositions necessary for advancement in their chosen careers, and integrates technical skills developed within applied associate degree programs with professional skills intrinsic in a bachelor’s degree program.
