Classics is the foundation of Western Civilization, from Bronze Age Greece to the Fall of Rome. It encompasses a wide variety of subjects, including language, literature, history, history and philosophy of science, political science, philosophy, art history, archeology, and mythology.

Studying classics will teach you to think holistically about societies in the past. At the same time, you can see parallels in modern society. Our Founding Fathers looked to the civilizations of ancient Greece and Rome to draft the documents by which we Americans live. Ninety percent of English words over two syllables come from Latin. The majority of medical and scientific terms are based on Greek and Latin. Classics can help you discover and rediscover new things in every aspect of your life.

The goal of the program is to train students in modern electrical and computer engineering design skills, with the objective of post-graduation employment in a related field.  This will be achieved through attainment of the following student outcomes, as specified by the ABET Engineering Technology Accreditation Commission.  Each of these outcomes is addressed in one or more curricular requirements of the program.

Statistics is distinct from mathematics as a field of study, yet is founded upon the theory of probability—the mathematics of chance. The Bachelor of Science in Statistics is a degree program emphasizing statistics both as a science unto itself and as a service science, with powerful applications in such disciplines as biology, medicine, sociology, chemistry, agriculture, education, engineering, economics, psychology, and quality control. Graduate from this program, and you should be well qualified for employment in the many corporations and government agencies for which statisticians design experiments, conduct surveys, and analyze data. Also, the Bachelor of Science in Statistics prepares you for graduate study in statistics (or in a science in which statistics plays a decisive role), after which you will have even greater employment possibilities.

The Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience was developed by an interdisciplinary team of Wright State University faculty, and emphasizes how physics, biology, chemistry, psychology, and mathematics are integrated to become the field of neuroscience. Courses are designed so that the majority of the time, students are doing rather than listening. The program’s coursework focuses on the cell biology and physiology of neurons and neuronal circuits. It includes training in research techniques, and opportunities to assist faculty with their research. Students will be competitively prepared for health-related preprofessional programs, scientific research, and other career paths.

Program Learning Goals and Skills

The Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience program is focused on in-depth neuroscience content knowledge centered around four main learning goals:

    Organization – There is an expansive, yet repetitive, organization to the nervous system, that matches structure with function.
    Cellular Neurophysiology – Neurons are cells with dynamic and excitable membranes. Specialized receptors and channels underlie all chemical and electrical signals in the nervous system.
    Information Processing – The effectiveness of communication between neurons is highly modifiable and is critical for regulating the flow of information within neural networks. Information is also encoded in the timing of signals.
    Neural Networks and Behavior – The average adult brain contains approximately 100 billion neurons with 100 trillion connections, that make a multitude of connections with each other in an organized fashion. This connectivity serves as the link between structure and function, dictating our behavioral responses to various innocuous and traumatic stimuli.

The Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology has a distinguished history for providing the best in graduate and medical education. The mathematics component of the Bachelor of Arts program surveys the classical areas of mathematics—analysis, algebra, and geometry—and their history. Courses in statistics and in computer science provide a taste of two relatively young branches of the mathematical sciences. In addition, a broad choice of electives allows you to either pursue greater depth in one of these areas, or to sample a broader range of courses in mathematics, statistics, and computing.

The Bachelor of Arts program features breadth and flexibility. For instance, there is a Related Course Requirement specifically designed to accommodate subject matter outside the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, and even outside both the College of Science and Mathematics and the College of Engineering and Computer Science. Crime and justice studies (CJS) is an interdisciplinary and incredibly varied field of study. Knowledge specific to the discipline relies upon research from fields as varied as sociology, law, history, psychology, and political science. It encompasses analysis of federal, state, and local entities that seek to understand, control, and deter crime. The principal agencies charged with these responsibilities are law enforcement, the judiciary, and corrections. More fundamentally, however, crime and justice studies examines questions of social justice—concerns related to equality, fairness, freedom, security, and social order. If you are interested in understanding the causes, responses, and consequences of crime for the individual as well as the larger society, consider this program.

Crime and justice studies is a liberal arts degree and therefore, our focus is on providing you with a well-rounded, critically engaged, and scientifically informed understanding of the field. While practical experience is a vital component of our curriculum, our larger mission is that, when you graduate, you will be an innovator and leader in your chosen occupations and will utilize scientific reasoning and sharply honed analytical skills on your path to success. You will be prepared for positions in a variety of occupations, including local and federal law enforcement, probation and parole, civil, criminal and juvenile courts, research, corrections, teaching, forensics, and a variety of other fields.

While crime and justice studies is an exciting and challenging major, it is not for everyone. Unfortunately, if you have a prior criminal record or a drug or alcohol dependency it will be difficult for you to obtain employment in the field once you graduate. Further, it is a field that generally requires not only keen analytic and technical skills but also the ability to empathize, establish strong interpersonal boundaries, and, most importantly, maintain fundamental respect for the rights and dignity of others.
