Computer Science is the study of the design, construction and use of computer systems. When you complete a Bachelor of Computer Science at UNSW, you’ll develop the skills and knowledge required for computer applications to be developed.

Working with both hardware and software, this undergraduate degree teaches the basic principles behind computing tools, operating systems, compilers and translators, and computer hardware.The Bachelor of Computer Science also focuses on the representation of data and data structures in computer systems and the design of algorithms for automatic manipulation of this information by programming languages and machine systems.

A Diploma is a 12-month course that gives you the foundational skills and knowledge in a specific area of study. A Diploma in Engineering will take you straight into Second Year of a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) at UNSW.

It is a great option for you as an international student if you need a bit more support but don't want to add extra time to your degree. If you have just missed out on direct entry into your preferred bachelor's degree, or hold qualifications that are not recognised by UNSW Sydney, this could also be the program for you.

Who is this program for?
The UNSW Diploma Program has been designed specifically for international students. Our Diplomas make it easy to adjust to university, with:

  • Smaller classes and at least 20% extra teaching time
  • Additional English and academic support
  • Course material equivalent to First Year courses within the UNSW Sydney degree, and
  • Access to the same facilities and resources as undergraduate students.

With an innovative First Year equivalent curriculum, you will gain a solid background in the  natural sciences, programming and introductory engineering courses. You will also get to design, develop and build your first prototype in your first engineering design course. This will give you a taster of what it is like for engineers in the real world.

Second Year at UNSW Sydney
Bachelor of Engineering (Honours)
Engineers develop practical solutions to technical and environmental problems by using science and mathematics. Through scientific discoveries engineers meet societal and consumer needs.

Engineers work in a range of roles across all different types of industries, from civil engineering to environmental, computer science to petroleum engineering – the possibilities are endless. The type of engineer you’ll become often depends on the specialisation you choose in this degree. This degree offers 19 engineering specialisations across different engineering disciplines.

In this degree you’ll gain a solid background in mathematics, natural sciences and computing that’ll prepare you to learn knowledge and skills in an engineering discipline. You’ll graduate with the technical knowledge, skills and attributes required to succeed as a professional engineer.

Petroleum Engineering (Major)
Petroleum engineers collaborate closely with other professionals such as geologists, to design drilling operations and develop optimal processes for the production of petroleum products, using sophisticated computer modelling. Petroleum engineers have the job of helping boost energy production around the world, aiding local and national economies. They are among the highest paid engineers, employed by some of the largest companies in the world to work on multi-million dollar projects.
