Overview

This program prepares you for a career as a manufacturing technician with knowledge of manufacturing processes including conventional machining and metal forming operations, composites, and advanced manufacturing methods.

Heavy emphasis is placed on:

  • Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machine operation and programming
  • Computer Aided Design (CAD)/Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM)
  • Jig and fixture design

The program also gives you an introduction to robotics and automation, non-destructive testing, dimensional metrology, and quality inspection methods.

This program develops the skills and knowledge you need to safely and effectively perform the oxyacetylene, arc, tungsten inert gas (TIG), and metal inert gas (MIG) welding processes and related operations.
You will spend the majority of class time on practical shop work, with your remaining time spent on instruction in welding, mathematics, science, industrial communications, and blueprint reading.

Theory tests in each welding component and grading of practical work assignments to government and industry standards.
Upon graduation you will receive a certificate from Red River College.
Students will be tested for Canadian Welding Bureau certification in SMAW and GMAW for an additional fee, and on passing will receive a student ticket from Canadian Welding Bureau.

Prior to starting the program, you will be invited to participate in a math and reading skills diagnostic testing session that will advise you of your program readiness.
This is a not an apprenticeship program, but may provide credit transfer opportunities towards apprenticeship. This program trains you for entry-level employment as an engineering technologist in the electrical industry, which provides a broad range of employment opportunities. You develop the conceptual knowledge base and troubleshooting skills to prepare you for a range of roles that include design, installation, maintenance, production, and technical sales and support.

Topics in the program include:

  • Use and application of programmable logic controllers (PLCs), variable frequency motor drives (VFDs), soft starters, and data communication to link all of the preceding elements for the control of manufacturing systems.
  • Planning, designing, and specifications of power systems with motor protection for buildings and industrial plants. You will generate AutoCAD drawings, calculate short circuit currents, and coordinate fuses, circuit breakers, and protective relays. Canadian Electrical Code instruction is delivered by journeyman electricians.
  • Hydro electric power generation, transmission, and distribution systems with a view to operation, control, and protection.
  • Assessment of power system harmonics concerns by measuring TDD and THD and offering solutions to improve performance.

Co-op/Practicum Information
Co-operative education integrates classroom theory with related on-the-job-training by alternating terms of academic study and employment.
This program offers a co-operative education stream to give you direct industry experience, introduce your abilities to local employers, and help finance your schooling. 
Year 1 includes an optional co-op work term. Year 2 includes a mandatory co-op work term. Only students enrolled in the first or second year of Electronic, Electrical or Instrumentation Engineering Technology are eligible to enrol in the co-op work term.

Note: First year of the program will be held at the Exchange District Campus before transferring to the main Notre Dame Campus for the rest of the program.

The Truck Transport Technology program gives you the necessary skills required to diagnose and repair today’s truck transport vehicles. Training alternates between in class, live shop and work experience. Classroom instruction will broaden your knowledge in truck transport electronics as well as strategies required for diagnosis of engine management systems, fuel injection and abs brakes.

  • Main subject areas include electrical diagnosis, electronics, ignition systems, engines, drive-lines, steering and suspension, brakes and fuel system.
  • Second-year students will have the opportunity to be involved in chassis and engine dynamometer projects in areas of emissions analysis, cold weather testing of hybrid and electrical vehicles and engine performance.
  • Upon graduation, students will receive a level two apprenticeship accreditation.

In this program, you will develop the knowledge, skills, and values required to support and enhance the development of persons with disabilities. The program focuses on 'community', and students will provide support to persons with disabilities in schools, homes, employment, and leisure settings. The program is offered as a workplace model which means that courses are offered in a block format and practica is integrated throughout the term. It also means that regular applicants will learn alongside individuals who are currently working in the field. 

As a student, you will learn how to assist persons with disabilities to plan and achieve their personal goals and maintain their health and well-being. You will understand how to promote the development of inclusive communities and display competent, responsible, and professional behaviour and attitudes. You will also have an opportunity to experience a variety of community settings through your fieldwork, or practicum, which makes up about one quarter of the program.

This program develops the skills you require to assist dentists using four-handed dentistry techniques.
As a dental assisting student, you will learn about dental procedures, including the instruments, materials, and equipment used for each.  You will also learn how to prevent the transmission of disease/infection through infection control techniques, e.g. sterilization.  You will also learn basic laboratory skills, e.g. pouring models.  The program will also prepare you to work as an intra-oral assistant by developing skills to perform the following procedures:

This is an entry-level program that develops the basic knowledge and skills you need to perform routine maintenance and repairs to vehicle systems and components. The program is designed to prepare you to adjust, service, and repair a variety of heavy mobile equipment, usually diesel powered, used in construction, agriculture, or highway transportation. The work will involve basic servicing to engines and related equipment, and performing repairs. This will include transmission servicing, hydraulic/air brakes, and basic electrical in heavy duty application.

Emphasis during training will be on practical projects. Most of your training will take place at the College in the diesel mechanics workshop, a work environment designed to provide the practical experience you will need to find a job. You will spend approximately 60 percent of your training hours doing practical work on engines, standard transmissions, automatic transmissions, basic electric, basic brake systems, and servicing of equipment.

A number of related trade courses such as arc and gas welding, mathematics, science, and communications are included in the program. Theory grades are determined by examinations in each course, while practical evaluations are determined from each instructor's practical assignments.
