Materials Science focuses on understanding the intrinsic structure of a material and the control of its structure through processing. It studies the relationship of the engineering properties of the three main classes of materials (metals, polymers and ceramics) as well as composites and semiconductors.

Materials Scientists are in high demand internationally – particularly within the thriving polymer/plastics, metals, ceramics and composites industries. Education and Society involves critical inquiry into the social, political, cultural, and economic policies, theories and practices of education in New Zealand society. Its origins are in humanities and social science disciplines such as History, Philosophy, and Sociology, and it has close affinities with contemporary interdisciplinary fields exploring social policy, culture, gender, and work. Education and Society raises questions about the role of education in addressing issues of social justice, power and inequality.

The Bachelor of Social Sciences (BSocSc) will challenge your thinking about the world and the people who live in it. The degree focuses on contemporary social issues, the ways in which humans interact with these issues and how such actions can be monitored and modified.

Geography matters because it is about basic human relationships - between people and the environment, and between people and other people. Ranked among the top geography programs in the world, the Geography program at Waikato is the only solely human geography program in New Zealand.

This highly practical subject is for students who wish to develop the hands-on technical skills required to work in professional media production studios, such as film, documentary and television, web series, podcasting, game design, sound design, soundscape, music, web media, and more.

Papers cover all stages of the media production process; from pre- to post-production.

Students will be equipped with the know-how to design and implement image-text-motion, sound/music and audio-visual methods of communication.

For example, you can learn how to use Adobe software (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop) to design and produce page layouts, illustrations, and edit images for print and web applications.

Or you might prefer to study film production and gain the practical skills to shoot and edit short films, using a camera, sound gear, lighting techniques and digital editing (After Effects).

Students can also learn about the principles of good design, or develop the skills to create original music using digital audio technology.

More advanced papers focus on areas such as interactive media design, podcasting, film production, design thinking, visual communication, and creative music technology.

This subject explores the knowledge, language, culture, politics, methods and theory of Pacific and Indigenous Studies, while teaching students how to interpret new ways of understanding the world.

Pacific and Indigenous Studies focuses on the diverse Pacific region – which covers a third of the earth’s surface and is home to over 1200 languages – as well as on the histories, experiences and perspectives of Pacific people in New Zealand.

Students of Pacific and Indigenous Studies bring a wide range of background knowledge to their studies: from Pacific students who will find their own perspectives are valued and expanded through academic study in this area, all the way through to students who might have little knowledge about the region but bring a desire to learn about where we are.

All students of Pacific and Indigenous Studies learn a lot about the region and where we are, and also practice and develop skills of critical thinking, communication, and analysis of diverse perspectives.
