Biotechnology
Biotechnology is about the 'doing' of science. This includes quality assurance of laboratory practices, analysis of samples, and reporting on sample results. People who choose this pathway can work in positions as researchers or laboratory technicians.

This programme is for those who want to enhance their degree or work experience with knowledge and skills in public relations, advertising, and media practices. Students will work on live projects with real clients, with support from tutors with industry experience.

To be successful in public relations or advertising, students must be an excellent communicator, a problem solver, a lateral thinker, interested in contemporary issues, creative and able to work under pressure. The Graduate Diploma in Communication (Level 7) can help develop students' abilities in these areas and prepare them for a career in these exciting industries.

Studying this program, students will be equipped with the skills for a multi-media career in journalism or communications.

Students in this program will develop news sourcing, writing and publishing skills; as well as technical skills in photography and videography. Students will put these skills into practice publishing regularly in the Wintec online newspaper, The Waikato Independent, and through projects with industry.

This program is designed to provide students with a broad base of business knowledge, and gain role-specific skills in either accounting or leadership and management.

All strands will learn about business operational functions, business communication, the New Zealand business context and interpersonal relationships.

In the accounting strand students will study financial transactions, financial statements, budgeting and taxation, and decision-making and analysis. This strand may equip graduates to work towards the academic requirements for CAANZ’s Accounting Technicians College.

In the leadership and management strand students will study business planning, project management, and leadership.

Students in the Bachelor of Design programme will develop their creativity, innovation, and design capabilities to find new ways to visually and strategically solve challenges for brands and organisations.

Spatial design
Students will develop designs focusing on functional interior spaces and design fundamentals that span across both residential and commercial disciplines while learning the skills needed to thrive in the industry, including pitching to clients and overseeing a project from start to finish. They will learn:

• Design fundamentals for residential and commercial spaces
• People and communication skills to pitch to clients
• Construction knowledge and project management strategies

Students in this program will learn the knowledge and skills to deliver quality information technology services and develop effective communication skills to support and enhance various organisations and industries.

Students can choose to specialise in one of the following five specialisations:

Network engineering
For those seeking a career in the field of network engineering, network administration, cyber and network security.

Software engineering
For those seeking a career in software engineering, software development, big data and analytics, mobile applications development, and software testing.

Web development
For those seeking a career in web design/development, web applications development, and mobile applications development.

This program is for those with a degree in another subject who want to progress their career into sales and marketing. Students will develop specialist skills in consumer behavioural analysis, domestic and international market theory, and applied marketing  campaigns.

All modules in the Graduate Diploma in Sales and Marketing are compulsory, there are no elective modules. Students will study five modules specific to Sales and Marketing covering subjects such as planning, sales, strategic marketing and international marketing.

This program is for those who want to work in clinical settings as an enrolled nurse and a valued member of the health team.

Students will gain knowledge in nursing, social science, and the structure and function of the human body. They will learn skills in simulated learning environments which can then be applied on placements in clinical practice. A range of clinical courses in different health care settings will prepare students to practice in areas including rehabilitation, acute care and mental health.

After completing this program students will be able to apply to the Nursing Council of New Zealand to sit an exam to be registered as an Enrolled Nurse; this means they will be able to practise under the direction of a Registered Nurse.

The Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Information Technology enables students to undertake an advanced program of study, covering a wide range of areas to further their academic subject area knowledge of information technology and research skills to obtain employment or advance their careers.

Students in this program will learn theoretical and technical knowledge in a specialised field of science such as:

Food technology is about the science of food. People who choose this pathway can work in entry level positions as food technologists who develop new food products, analyse the components of food, or; food safety officers who audit the food manufacturing industry.

Environmental technology is about the science of conservation, biosecurity and environmental management. People who choose this pathway can work in entry level positions as biosecurity officers who help manage pest animal and plant control, and help conserve local environments.

This program is highly practical. Alongside learning theory, students will spend time in the laboratory developing the essential practical skills that are useful in the workplace.
