Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in History and Politics

Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in History and Politics

at Keele University United Kingdom

Overview

Studying History and Politics at Keele will enable you to develop your appreciation of various global histories and political arenas, whilst enjoying the rich history of our local area. In your spare time, you might find yourself exploring the largest collection of Anglo-Saxon metalwork most likely deposited in the 7th century in the then Kingdom of Mercia. The Staffordshire Hoard provides a window to England in the 6th and 7th centuries and also to the warrior elite that existed during these times and now rests less than 5 miles away from Keele.

Whether interpreting acts of resistance, assessing economic change, describing environmental behaviour or understanding acts of oppression, an appreciation of the past is essential to understanding where we are today and how we’re attempting to shape the future. Even societies in the very distant past can be highly relevant in this respect, which is why history and politics work very well together as subjects. You will learn the skills of the historian as you deepen your understanding of eras, continents and cultures from political, social and religious perspectives, and you will learn to use that knowledge to analyse the way in which societies govern themselves today. You’ll develop an understanding of different approaches to history and politics, developing a range of methods used in their pursuit.

The MA in Human Geography and Sustainability Research provides students with advanced-level skills in human geography and sustainability-related research for a career in the public, private and / or voluntary and community sector. This includes positions with national and local government, other public bodies, Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), private sector consultancies and research and policy institutes. It also delivers high quality postgraduate training to students wishing to pursue a PhD in human geography or sustainability and environmental studies.

The programme is distinctive in three ways. First, it brings together expertise in Human Geography and Sustainability-related research to provide a truly interdisciplinary approach focused around equipping students with the necessary methodological skills to investigate key societal problems and their resolution. Second, through providing both subject-specific and broader social science training, the MA provides students with a wide-ranging set of research competencies which can be utilised in a range of academic, policy and practice- based settings. Third, in developing research skills and knowledge of human geography, sustainability and the environment, the MA is compliant (subject to approval) with the research training requirements for Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) PhD scholarships (commonly termed +3), and is also suitable as the master's year as part of an ESRC scholarship award that covers both the master's and PhD (commonly termed a 1+3 award).

One third of the course (60 credits) involves students following a number of new subject-specific research training modules in Human Geography and Sustainability, including a focus on contemporary key themes in human geography and sustainability, advanced methods in human geography and sustainability and a 'research traineeship', whereby students will have the opportunity to get 'hands on' real world research experience working with a research mentor on a live research project. Such modules will be delivered by internationally recognised experts from within the School of Geography, Geology and Environment.

The programme's interdisciplinary approach to understanding some of the world’s most pressing problems means you’ll study a wide range of subjects, including the social sciences, arts, humanities and the natural sciences. We adopt an innovative approach to teaching, for example, previous students have engaged in 'living labs' where students have explored local issues and their potential solutions through field trips.

You will have the opportunity to apply knowledge and generate evidence and understanding by engaging with living communities and landscapes. Students will pursue hands-on research into Britain’s industrial, social, economic and cultural history as well as current/future-oriented issues which may include economic regeneration, social and political challenges and environmental sustainability, citizenship and creativity with opportunities for learning analytical, communication, presentational, writing and research skills. Whilst hosted in the School of Social, Political and Global Studies, Liberal Arts is closely associated with the Institute of Liberal Arts and Sciences (ILAS).
