The aim of the MSc Economics & Finance is to produce highly skilled professionals who can analyse, understand and explain the complex economic and financial issues that arise in a globalised world. 

Jointly delivered by the Departments of Economics and Accounting & Finance, you will study the interaction between economics and finance, which is now critical to understanding the world we live in. 

Training in these subjects will equip you for finding employment in the public or private sector as economists, analysts or consultants. 

There is a strong emphasis on developing and applying skills learned in classes to real-world situations. 

The practitioner seminar series within our Professional Development for Economists class provides you with opportunities to learn from senior figures in business, consultancy and government about the key economic issues of the day and their own journey to the top of their chosen career. Many of the speakers are our own graduates.

Digital technology is profoundly changing journalism, with innovations like hyperlocal news and mobile media reporting becoming increasingly prevalent.

Our approach to the English & Creative writing course is innovative, modern and friendly, giving you a comprehensive understanding of English literature as a core basis for your creative work.

History

• Studying history – the story of humanity through the ages – develops your knowledge of the past and gives you a better understanding of the present.

• Our classes cover some of the most important and interesting historical periods at home and abroad, including Scotland’s ‘Highland Problem’ in the 16th century, Slavery in World History and Cold War Europe, 1945-1991.

Journalism, Media & Communication

• Today’s media industry expands beyond traditional print and broadcast journalism. It includes professional bloggers and vloggers, freelance writers and editors, podcasters, people working in entertainment TV, radio, or film, creators of video games and interactive apps, promoters of ideas and products, and many others.
• The most successful professionals in today’s media are not only highly skilled in reporting, writing, editing and pitching their material, but they are also excellent communicators online and offline, and problem-solvers. They are innovative and entrepreneurial, bold and curious, open-minded and collaborative. These are also some of Strathclyde’s core values, which guide our own teaching, research, and public engagement.
• Pursuing the BA in Journalism, Media and Communication will engage you in useful learning in a broad professional context, which includes a critical understanding of the media industry, while acquiring technical and professional skills in journalism, communication, information design and management, and using them in the dynamic media market of Glasgow and beyond. It will also allow you to take a second subject, which will enhance your expertise and university experience even further.

Mathematics is everywhere: weather forecasting, cash machines, secure websites, electronic games, liquid crystal displays, statistical data analysis.

We use statistics to explore and explain the world in which we live, such as in opinion polls and market research. However, it’s also important for manufacturing and testing many products, in particular showing that modern drugs are safe in treating humans.

Our course focuses on applying mathematics to solving practical problems.

Computers are an essential part of modern business and mathematics must often be formulated before the computer can be of use.

This degree will give you the skills to tackle problems in a business environment.

The MPhys teaches physics in greater depth than the BSc Honours degree. It’s for those of you who want to pursue a professional career in physics, with classes designed to meet the needs of the professional physicist.

You’ll focus your studies on a specific area, such as theoretical and computational physics, plasma physics or laser physics. You’ll also undertake a project, supervised by a member of staff in their research labs.

There is a strong emphasis on laboratory work, which will help you develop a sound understanding of experimental physics and instrumentation.

You’ll complete your laboratory work training with a research project carried out in an up-to-date research lab, attached to one of the department’s research groups. This allows you to benefit from our lively and diverse research environment.

Accreditation

There are a number of ways you can study law at Strathclyde, one such way being the BA degree in combination with another subject.

Law is concerned with the study of the obligations, duties and rights which every member of society has in relation to one another and to the state.

The study of law is regarded not as purely vocational, but part of a broader education. Please note that studying law within the BA degree will not qualify you for entry to the legal profession. For professional qualifications in law, students follow the LLB programme.

Our main focus in psychology is the study of human behaviour.

You'll look at conditions of behaviour – how we learn, remember, coordinate our actions and interact with others – and the reasons for differences between individuals, such as personality or intelligence.

Due to the popularity of the course and performance criteria for entry into Honours (Year 4) the numbers admitted to Years 2 and 3 of the course are limited.

Production engineers and managers do not just create technological solutions though, they also motivate, organise and interact with others to make sure products and services are provided when and where customers’ needs exist.

The demand industry’s need for those skilled in this area continues to increase as the demand for quicker turnaround times, to meet the requirements of increasing global customers and to provide enhanced online shopping and service experiences grows progresses.

Manufacturing Engineering with Management blends a more technical engineering focus (such as mechanics, manufacturing, electronics, maths, programming, engineering calculations of a products design) with production and management principles, and technology such as operational improvement and quality management.

This is integrated with manufacturing processes, design, CAD, rapid prototyping and digital prototyping technologies, software and practical skills to turn the design and production process into reality which is fundamental to global market success. Considerations include environmental impact, reducing waste and increasing outputs to meet targets.
