The MSc TESOL and Intercultural Communication degree is designed for those who intend to pursue a career in teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL). It's also suitable for those who currently work in this field but wish to enhance professional knowledge and skills and improve career prospects.

The course addresses questions about the learning, teaching and use of English by speakers of other languages from an intercultural communication perspective. It draws on the expertise of educationalists, linguists, and literature/culture scholars.  

Course options enable you to explore issues across these disciplines or to specialise in one area. Recognising that the place of English is evolving rapidly in an increasingly complex multilingual and multicultural world, you'll be equipped with the theoretical and practical skills to teach English to learners with a wide range of social, cultural and communicative goals.

You'll gain a better understanding of language learning and language use in intercultural contexts. You'll have the opportunity engage with key issues relating to language teaching and intercultural communication. and develop theoretical knowledge and practical skills for language-related careers in a linguistically diverse world.

Mechanical engineers are recognised for their knowledge and skills in conceiving, designing, implementing and operating devices, machines, engines and energy systems.The Department of Mechanical Engineering is targeted for graduate recruitment by more than 60 companies and we're 6th in the UK for Mechanical Engineering in the Complete University Guide League Table 2020.Study abroad is an option for all our courses. The named degree (Mechanical Engineering with International Study) ensures that the international study experience is recognised in the title of the degree award.

Civil engineering develops and improves facilities and services that society needs – from the supply of clean water and energy to the design and construction of roads, railways and stations.

Tall buildings such as the Shard in London or the new Queensferry Bridge across the Firth of Forth are exciting examples of civil engineering.

Our graduates develop and renew towns and cities and improve links with remote communities.

Solving problems of air, land and water pollution and protecting society against natural disasters are also important aspects of civil engineering.

In recent years, our students have participated in the Constructionarium, attended Civil Engineering 4 Real and have taken part in our mentoring scheme involving graduate engineers with support companies such as BAM Nuttall, Sir Robert McAlpine, Tony Gee, Forth Crossing Bridge Constructors and Mott MacDonald.

Please that studying Law within the BA degree will not qualify you for entry to the legal profession. For professional qualifications in Law, students follow the LLB programme.

Please note that this course doesn't allow you to qualify as a teacher, though joint honours Education graduates will be able to explore postgraduate routes into teaching careers (via the PGDE).
