Overview

This 18-month MSc course has been developed to provide high-calibre mechanical engineering graduates with an in-depth technical understanding of advanced mechanical topics. You’ll gain the specialist and generic skills necessary to contribute effectively in developing company capabilities, with practical experience provided by the industrial placement.

Industrial Placement

  • You'll complete an industrial placement in the period from June to August, after you have completed the taught part of your degree, but before your final project. The Department will support you in making applications for industry internships. Please note that it's your responsibility to secure a work placement.
  • You'll be fully supported by the University while on a placement. You'll be allocated a University of Strathclyde supervisor who'll act as your point of contact during your placement.

Marine vehicles have developed dramatically in recent years. Lighter, faster, stronger, greener and safer vehicles are being designed and built using advanced materials and technology combined with creative design engineering.

This course creates designers with all the core skills of ship design, construction, operation and maintenance. They also have a particular specialisation in the creative design and engineering of high performance leisure and commercial vehicles, including sailing and power yachts, fast ferries, hydrofoils, hovercraft, fishing boats and the concept designs of the future.

All our courses offer you the chance to take classes in specialist subjects such as high performance marine Vehicles, marine engineering or ocean engineering.

It utilises a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods to improve our understanding of how societies organise their resources to meet individual and social needs and how they measure progress in these areas. 

This programme gives you the opportunity to learn more about the social and economic challenges facing Scottish society and place these in a broader international perspective. Studying within our Department of Design, Manufacturing & Engineering Management, you'll have access to some of the leading academics in the whole product development life cycle and benefit from their experience in industry, current research projects and advancements in those fields.

We are the only department in the UK that combines end-to-end multidisciplinary expertise from creative design, through engineering design, manufacture and management of the entire system. This is more commonly split between art school and engineering faculties; however, we can provide you with a broader understanding of the overall process and expertise in each area, in a single department.
