Following the recent global economic crisis, economics is more important and relevant than ever. Decisions on money, banking, interest rates, taxation and government spending affect us all, with global consequences.

Economics aims to understand the activities of the different agents in the economy – consumers, producers and the government – and how they all fit together.

Our degree will give you the ability to explain complex data in simple terms to different audiences. You’ll also develop excellent mathematical, statistical and problem-solving skills.

In Psychology, you’ll study human behaviour. Psychological research is motivated by the desire to understand both general behaviour (how we learn, remember, co-ordinate our actions and interact with others) and the reasons for the differences between individuals, such as personality or intelligence.

Please note, a joint Honours degree is not accredited for the Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership by the British Psychological Society.

The MSc Economics & Policy of Energy & Climate Change aims to produce future leaders in the sectors of energy and climate change.

The course addresses the complex and increasingly more extreme challenges and uncertainties that industries, economies, governments and societies face. By the end of the programme, you'll be well equipped to understand these, and have the knowledge to adapt to this changing context.

You'll learn about the rapid changes within the global energy system and about the way in which this is impacted by climate change and by the efforts to mitigate its impacts. These changes include escalating energy demand, constraints on supplies, impacts on energy mix, introduction of smart grids, fluctuating energy prices, regulatory pressures to reduce carbon emissions and to promote sustainability, increased integration of renewable energy sources, and changing demographics and patterns of energy use and supply.

The course offers excellent opportunities to network with energy and climate change specialists from a broad range of organisations. We've designed the course to maximise the opportunities for industry engagement. You'll also have the opportunity to take part in events organised by the Scottish Energy Forum.

The course covers areas of particular strengths of the Department of Economics, with a focus on energy and climate change. Through the Fraser of Allander Institute, the department also boasts research expertise in applying economic knowledge in the policy field.

Combining education with other subjects provides opportunities for those who wish to work in professions associated with education, but who don't wish necessarily to become teachers. Please note that this course doesn't allow you to qualify as a teacher, though joint honours Education graduates will be able to explore postgraduate routes into teaching careers (via the Professional Graduate Diploma in Education).

Biochemistry is the study of how cells work at molecular level. Biochemistry, and the related field of molecular biology are important in understanding the molecular basis of life and its role in the disease process.

Immunology is the study of how the body defends itself against disease. It helps us understand how the immune system is tricked into attacking its own tissue, leading to diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes or allergy.

The opportunity to choose specific degree combinations will allow you to go into specialist biomedical science areas such as neuroscience, cardiovascular research, immunopharmacology, industrial immunology, drug research, biochemistry, microbiology and bacteriology.

The Masters course in Education Studies introduces the most important questions and problems by which the discipline of education studies is characterised, along with the methodologies and methods used to answer those questions. In addition to the core modules designed to give you a solid foundation for understanding educational processes, you'll have the flexibility to choose a pair of modules from a range of specialist classes to meet your personal and professional needs. This includes a pair of work-based learning modules where you can explore how learning works, components of effective teaching and encourage professional learning through practitioner inquiry.

Education Studies is a discipline in its own right. While it draws on insights from different disciplines, such as psychology, sociology, philosophy, political studies and international relations, economics and business studies, it entertains a very specific perspective on the world.

In education studies, we're mainly interested in the ways, personal growth and (trans)formation can be individually and socially initiated, guided, and supported. Those educational processes are, of course, not restricted to contexts of formal education, eg schooling, but can be perceived everywhere in modern cultures.
