Statistics is the area of mathematics we use to explore and try to explain the uncertain world in which we live. You’ll be familiar with the use of statistics in opinion polls and market research. As a naval architecture student, you’ll learn to predict the stability and safety of ships, as well as their strength, speed, powering and propulsion requirements. You’ll discover how to calculate the motions of ships and other floating structures in rough seas, and how to estimate their reliability and safety in extreme conditions.

Ocean engineering deals with the technical aspects of fixed and floating marine structures and systems related to harnessing ocean resources. These include offshore oil and gas and the rapidly expanding area of ocean renewable energy, as well as other ocean resource activities such as subsea mining and aquaculture.

The degree aims to develop graduates capable of dealing with engineering challenges on a wide range of marine vehicles from tankers, bulk carriers, container ships and giant cruise liners to tidal current turbines and oil/gas platforms.

In addition to core Naval Architecture subjects, you'll study a range of specialised Ocean Engineering subjects and subjects related to the design of novel ship and offshore structures such as risk management and reliability analysis, station-keeping and control and subsea engineering.

The MSCi in Applied Chemistry & Chemical Engineering provides a clear understanding of the fundamental principles of chemistry and chemical engineering. It also gives you an appreciation of the expertise needed to transform small-scale laboratory practice into large-scale chemical operations used in the industry.

This course will ensure you're well equipped to enter the industry with the range of skills which employers are looking for.

Teaching and classes are divided equally between the Departments of Pure & Applied Chemistry and Chemical & Process Engineering. Both departments have strong industrial links and a history of teaching students specifically for the chemical industry.

We are the only department in the UK that combines end-to-end multidisciplinary expertise from creative design, through engineering design, manufacture and management of the entire system. Our MSci Immunology is a five-year Integrated Masters degree with entry into either Year 1 with Highers or Year 2 with Advanced Highers or A Levels. 

Immunology is the study of how the body defends itself against disease. It helps us understand how the immune system is tricked into attacking its own tissue, leading to diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes or allergy.

The degree is for suitable for those who want to specialise in a single biomedical science. It’s particularly relevant if you want to pursue a research career.

In Years 1 to 4, you’ll follow the same curriculum as one of the joint Honours biomedical sciences degree. In Year 5, you’ll focus on developing generic and subject-based research skills and knowledge. A significant part of this course is project-based.
