Manufacturing engineers and managers do not just create technological solutions though, they also motivate, organise and interact with others to make sure products and services are provided when and where customers’ needs exist.

The demand industry’s need for those skilled in this area continues to increase as the demand for quicker turnaround times, to meet the requirements of increasing global customers and to provide enhanced online shopping and service experiences grows progresses.

Manufacturing Engineering with Management blends a more technical engineering focus (such as mechanics, manufacturing, electronics, maths, programming, engineering calculations of a product's design) with production and management principles, and technology such as operational improvement and quality management.

This is integrated with manufacturing processes, design, CAD, rapid prototyping and digital prototyping technologies, software and practical skills to turn the design and production process into reality which is fundamental to global market success. Considerations include environmental impact, reducing waste and increasing outputs to meet targets.

Our BA degrees in Humanities & Social Sciences are initially broad-based. In Year 1, you'll study three subjects, including your chosen subject(s).

History

• Studying history – the story of humanity through the ages – develops your knowledge of the past and gives you a better understanding of the present.
• Throughout your studies, you'll receive excellent training in areas such as problem-solving, communication, research methods, and interpretation.
• Our classes cover some of the most important and interesting historical periods at home and abroad, including Scotland’s ‘Highland Problem’ in the 16th century, Slavery in World History and Cold War Europe, 1945-1991.

Journalism, Media & Communication

• Today’s media industry expands beyond traditional print and broadcast journalism. It includes professional bloggers and vloggers, freelance writers and editors, podcasters, people working in entertainment TV, radio, or film, creators of video games and interactive apps, promoters of ideas and products, and many others.
• The most successful professionals in today’s media are not only highly skilled in reporting, writing, editing and pitching their material, but they are also excellent communicators online and offline, and problem-solvers. They are innovative and entrepreneurial, bold and curious, open-minded and collaborative. These are also some of Strathclyde’s core values, which guide our own teaching, research, and public engagement.
• Pursuing the BA in Journalism, Media and Communication will engage you in useful learning in a broad professional context, which includes a critical understanding of the media industry, while acquiring technical and professional skills in journalism, communication, information design and management, and using them in the dynamic media market of Glasgow and beyond. It will also allow you to take a second subject, which will enhance your expertise and university experience even further.

Biochemistry is the study of how cells work at molecular level. Biochemistry, and the related field of molecular biology are important in understanding the molecular basis of life and its role in the disease process.

Immunology is the study of how the body defends itself against disease. It helps us understand how the immune system is tricked into attacking its own tissue, leading to diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes or allergy.

The opportunity to choose specific degree combinations will allow you to go into specialist biomedical science areas such as neuroscience, cardiovascular research, immunopharmacology, industrial immunology, drug research, biochemistry, microbiology and bacteriology.

The course has been developed to offer theory, knowledge and practical skills development across the areas of clinical, health and neuropsychology. In addition, students will receive training in professional practice and advanced research methods.

The knowledge and skills you will develop will help prepare you for a PhD in a clinical or health-related area, or a career as a Practitioner Psychologist.

You can study full-time over one year or part-time over two years.

As a politics student, you'll look at the work of governments and their policies and study the behaviour of those who govern - and who they are governing - both at home and abroad. You'll also gain knowledge of domestic and international institutions and issues relating to conflict and cooperation. We cover diverse and relevant issues, such as international terrorism to the 2014 Scottish Independence Referendum.

Politics graduates can go on to work in a number of areas, with many pursuing academic research careers in the UK, Europe and North America.

Social Policy examines the ways in which societies distribute resources and develop services to meet individual and social needs. Key social policy issues examined include poverty; economic, race, age and gender inequality; social justice health; education; criminal justice and housing.

It utilises a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods to improve our understanding of how societies organise their resources to meet individual and social needs and how they measure progress in these areas. 

This programme gives you the opportunity to learn more about the social and economic challenges facing Scottish society and place these in a broader international perspective. It draws on disciplines such as history, sociology, anthropology, economics, law, psychology, social anthropology and politics.

Accreditation

• Our BSc Product Design and Innovation has been awarded academic accreditation from two institutes. This demonstrates the degree meets the UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence (UK-SPEC) as outlined by the Accreditation of Higher Education Programmes (AHEP).
• This accreditation is achieved through a panel of trained and expert accreditors looking closely at our programme’s content and delivery, including its relevance, coherence, challenge, assessment, staffing, quality assurance and resources.
• The accreditors also monitor that the programme is continually improving and in line with the latest best practice, providing assurance to our students that they are getting a relevant and quality degree.

Marine vehicles have developed dramatically in recent years. Lighter, faster, stronger, greener and safer vehicles are being designed and built using advanced materials and technology combined with creative design engineering.

This course creates designers with all the core skills of ship design, construction, operation and maintenance. They also have a particular specialisation in the creative design and engineering of high performance leisure and commercial vehicles, including sailing and power yachts, fast ferries, hydrofoils, hovercraft, fishing boats and the concept designs of the future.

All our courses offer you the chance to take classes in specialist subjects such as high performance marine vehicles, marine engineering or ocean engineering.

Accreditation

• Accredited by the Royal Institution of Naval Architects on behalf of the Engineering Council for the purposes of fully meeting the academic requirement for registration as Chartered Engineer.

The MSc in Business Analysis & Consulting has been developed to equip you with the practical, evaluative and analytical skills to allow you, as a future manager or consultant, to influence and develop strategy and performance within organisations. 

You'll learn the key quantitative business analysis methods necessary to evaluate performance. 

Industry involvement is at the heart of the course. You'll spend three weeks in January on a work placement, and have the opportunity to undertake your summer project in collaboration with an external organisation. 

In addition, you'll learn how to use business models to support the development of strategy for organisations and to help them to monitor and measure strategic processes. 

By the end of the program, you'll have developed the key skills of business consulting, which are applicable to any organisation.

For many, the perfect way to combine a passion for sport and technology is through a career in sports engineering.

Sports Design Engineering concentrates on the conception, design and manufacturing of sporting equipment. Sports engineers work in nearly every sport, creating designs that meet specialised specifications to improve athlete performance, safety and sports product durability. 

For example, sports engineers could be involved with projects as diverse as designing new high specification football boots or fitness monitoring and improvement products, match and playing surface analysis equipment to developing image processing algorithms which act as analytical tools to determine strategic instances in a game.

The background our students gain in biomechanics also makes careers in medical device development and design a viable career route which is an exciting area due to the new and emerging sports and widening participation in sports for example prosthetics and guidance for partially sighted.

A sports engineer requires expertise in many technical skills; from engineering design to understanding biomechanics of human movement, technology concepts to production techniques.
