Industrial placement

• We recognise the key links between physics and industry and many start-up companies and Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Scotland owe their existence to physics-based ideas. This is why we offer our students the chance to undertake an industrial placement during the break between Year 3 and Year 4. These placements are offered on a competitive basis.

Machine learning and deep neural network systems are currently used by leading organisations worldwide and research centres in a wide range of applications and products. This course is for engineers and scientists looking to gain the necessary skills to be able to design these systems for use in industry.

Our MSc Machine Learning & Deep Learning degree focuses on state-of-the-art technologies for machine learning and deep neural network systems. The emphasis is on architectures, algorithms and implementation with applications in a diverse range of areas.

Delivered jointly by the Departments of Electronic & Electrical Engineering and Computer & Information Sciences, you'll be exposed to state-of-the-art engineering and software technologies that underpin machine learning and deep neural network systems.

You'll learn about and gain experience from hands-on, industry relevant projects and examples. This includes programming languages and engineering tools used in an increasing number of products and services worldwide.

The combination of mechanical, electrical, electronic, computing, measurement and control elements are now an important part of most modern engineering systems and are essential to meet new challenges in engineering innovation.

Examples include energy generation, hybrid petrol/electric vehicles, aircraft design, satellite technology, robotic systems and technology for a sustainable environment.

This degree covers key areas of both electrical and mechanical engineering reflecting the multidisciplinary nature of modern engineering. There's a demand for graduates with expertise within and across the boundaries of both disciplines.

The degree has dual accreditation by the IET and the Institution of Mechanical Engineers meaning that you will be able to capitalise on career opportunities in both or either subject.

Combining education with other subjects provides opportunities for those who wish to work in professions associated with education, but who don't wish necessarily to become teachers. Please note that this course doesn't allow you to qualify as a teacher, though joint honours Education graduates will be able to explore postgraduate routes into teaching careers (via the PGDE).
