Overview

This course is for those aiming to develop careers in research or enter subsequent training for a scientist practitioner-oriented career such as clinical or educational psychology.

It also provides a basis for further postgraduate study such as a PhD and applications for research assistant posts.

In addition to acquiring the skills and theory for conducting research, you'll have the opportunity to meet and discuss research with postgraduate students in the School of Psychological Sciences and Health. You'll also play a role in research with members of our academic staff.

You may also have the opportunity to be employed within the School as a Graduate Teaching Assistant.

Specialist research equipment is available for use by our postgraduate students, including:

  • Motion capture via a suite of six infra-red cameras
  • A driving simulator which can be programmed to display different scenarios and be used in conjunction with other equipment
  • Several types of eye tracker available which have been used to examine topics such as word reading and bias in attention to alcohol-related stimuli
  • Two psychophysiology labs to measure electrodermal activity, heart activity, electromyographic signals and EEG
  • Experiment generator package ‘E-Prime’
  • A variety of questionnaires and ability measures including access to the online survey tool ‘Qualtrics’

Social Policy examines the ways in which societies distribute resources and develop services to meet individual and social needs. Key social policy issues examined include poverty; economic, race, age and gender inequality; social justice health; education; criminal justice and housing.

It utilises a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods to improve our understanding of how societies organise their resources to meet individual and social needs and how they measure progress in these areas. 

This program gives you the opportunity to learn more about the social and economic challenges facing Scottish society and place these in a broader international perspective. As a naval architecture student, you’ll learn to predict the stability and safety of ships, as well as their strength, speed, powering and propulsion requirements. You’ll discover how to calculate the motions of ships and other floating structures in rough seas, and how to estimate their reliability and safety in extreme conditions.

Ocean engineering deals with the technical aspects of fixed and floating marine structures and systems related to harnessing ocean resources. These include offshore oil and gas and the rapidly expanding area of ocean renewable energy, as well as other ocean resource activities such as subsea mining and aquaculture.

The degree aims to develop graduates capable of dealing with engineering challenges on a wide range of marine vehicles from tankers, bulk carriers, container ships and giant cruise liners to tidal current turbines and oil/gas platforms.

In addition to core Naval Architecture subjects, you'll study a range of specialised Ocean Engineering subjects and subjects related to the design of novel ship and offshore structures such as risk management and reliability analysis, station-keeping and control and subsea engineering.

This innovative degree is a joint venture between the University of Strathclyde and three further education colleges - West College Scotland, Glasgow Clyde College and New College Lanarkshire.
