Immunology helps us understand how the immune system is tricked into attacking its own tissue, leading to diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes or allergy. It's significantly helped modern medicine in areas such as blood transfusion, vaccination, organ transplantation along with the treatment of allergy, and autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and cancer.

It's also made vital contributions to cell biology, biochemistry, microbiology and pharmacology, and is starting to make major inroads into the food industry, agriculture and veterinary science. 

Pharmacology is the study of how drugs and other chemicals affect the body in health and disease. It also explores the development of new and improved medicines and the treatment of disease.

Pharmacology is a vibrant area of biomedical science that studies drug action (how medicines and other drugs work and are processed by the body).

Drug action affects all of us in one way or another, through the medicines that we take, the effects alcohol or caffeine consumption or the inadvertent exposure to poisons and environmental pollutants, as well as many other aspects of modern life such as drug addiction and drug abuse including the abuse of drugs in sport.

Pharmacological knowledge and understanding improves the lives of millions of people across the world by providing vital answers at every stage of the discovery, testing and clinical use of new medicines. The ability to use medicines effectively, to maximise their benefit and minimise risk and harm, relies on this knowledge. As new diseases emerge, and older medicines - most notably antibiotics - no longer work as well, the contribution of pharmacology to finding better and safer medicines becomes all the more vital.

The MSc in Quantitative Finance has been developed to address the demand for market-aware graduates who can demonstrate an understanding of mathematical models used in financial tools, products and software.

The course is an innovative cross-faculty alliance between Strathclyde Business School and the Faculty of Science. It's been designed for those with a strong aptitude for mathematics, statistics and computing who haven't studied these topics in detail in their undergraduate degree. The course allows students with different degree backgrounds to learn the necessary skills to move into the financial industry.
