Statistics is the study of data collection, analysis, interpretation, and presentation. Statisticians summarize and visualize data in meaningful ways, test hypotheses, estimate unknown quantities in the population, and predict unknown outcomes based on available data.

The Statistics B.S. prepares you (i) to summarize and visualize data, (ii) to analyze data to address research objectives, (iii) to communicate results clearly and effectively in both oral and written forms, (iv) to understand the role of the profession in service of society, and (v) to work in interdisciplinary environments.

Our program is designed for two paths. The first path is for workforce immediately after the B.S. degree such as industry (e.g., business, pharmaceuticals, actuarial science) and federal agencies. The second path is to pursue graduate degrees (M.S., M.A., or Ph.D.) in statistics, biostatistics, data science, and related fields requiring the statistical skills.

The Master of Arts in Education prepares strong education professionals to have an informed understanding of complex learning; the knowledge and skills to promote such learning; and the disposition to advocate effectively for the learning, living and growth of students, especially those who bring cultural, linguistic and other diversity to schools. The program coursework challenges educators to analyze and improve their instructional practice to better serve students with diverse ethnic and linguistic backgrounds, as well as students with special needs.

The Special Education strand of the MAE program is combined with our CLEAR Special Education Credential.

This program prepares strong professionals who have an informed understanding of what constitutes learning, the knowledge and skills to promote such learning, and the disposition to actively work toward change when policies or practices negatively impact the learning, living, or growth of students—especially those students with special needs who bring cultural or linguistic diversity to schools.

As such, the MAE with an emphasis in special education affords candidates an opportunity to expand their skill and knowledge base through exploration, analysis, and discussions about the latest trends and theories in special education in a scholarly environment that honors the free exchange of ideas, thoughts, and insights.

The Communication Design B.S. helps you to develop skills in visual design, web design, game design and interactive media to fulfill the needs of these industries. You’ll gain a broad-based understanding of current technologies and applications along with knowledge of design, communication, and management skills.

The M.S. in Environmental Science offers innovative, interdisciplinary training in science and technology within the context of environmental policy. There are two M.S. degree options: Professional Science Master’s (PSM) and thesis.

Within the PSM option, you will deepen the skills you learn in the classroom through a professional internship. The PSM option gives you flexibility to structure your graduate experience around your professional interests. You will develop specialized skills that will distinguish your entry into a career that requires highly skilled professionals within technology and applied science-based companies, resource management and planning agencies, scientific and environmental consulting firms, government agencies, and non-profit organizations. The thesis option focuses on independent research intended for professional publication, and can launch you into a doctoral program or a professional career in scientific research, resource management, education, and policy.

Located at the nexus of world-class research agencies and institutes, state and regional preserves, the Fort Ord National Monument, and the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, CSU Monterey Bay is a prime location for studying watershed, terrestrial, and coastal environments.

The Global Studies program will guide you in the critical analysis of complex and interdependent global systems.  Through interdisciplinary learning–including socio-cultural, political, economic, spiritual/religious, ecological topics–you will become an engaged global citizen who contributes solutions to the world’s most pressing issues.

The required and elective courses, spread out over five Major Learning Outcomes, will prepare you for an integrated study of global processes, forms of knowledge, and interdisciplinary methods, including and often centering voices from the ‘Global South.’  You will explore themes such as humanitarianism, migration, development, political economy, religion, conflict and peace-making, gender, and ecology.  Finally, you will apply integrative knowledge and skills to address contemporary global problems through a Capstone project.

In the Psychology major, you’ll develop a solid understanding of human behavior and mental processes using a scientific approach. You’ll explore the ways in which human biology, psychological experience and cultural contexts combine to influence our actions and thoughts.

The ability to communicate with Japanese speakers and appreciate Japanese culture gives you an advantage in a wide range of careers. Whether on the job or in your community, your Japanese language competency and cultural understanding can help you establish valuable connections in the global community.

The B.A. in Japanese Language and Culture prepares you to be an active participant in an ever-shrinking and increasingly interdependent world society by developing your literacy in global matters, multiculturalism and cultural diversity, as well as guiding you to achieve a higher level of language proficiency (Intermediate-High level according to the ACTFL guidelines). You will be able to communicate effectively in Japanese with well-rounded Japanese cultural knowledge in such areas as arts, history, humanities, literature, and social sciences.

The program prepares you for successful careers in professions such as teaching, business, technology, travel, tourism, foreign policy, governmental and non-governmental agencies, as well as for graduate study in Japanese studies, linguistics, Asian studies, translation and interpretation, TESOL, or focused international disciplines such as policy, management, environmental sciences, business management, law school, and business administration.

Professions in Kinesiology are among the fastest growing in the world. Individuals, corporations, and government entities have come to recognize that the fitness, health, and well-being of individuals creates the foundation for the success of our society and economy. By providing you with knowledge, skills and abilities, our Kinesiology faculty and staff will help prepare you to pursue a number of enjoyable professions, and post-graduate opportunities.

The Kinesiology major develops comprehensive expertise in the human body’s development and functions, the roles of physical movement in growth and learning, and the methods for improving and maintaining a high quality of life and personal wellness at every age.

The CHHS major provides you with the essential knowledge, skills and abilities needed to become a future leader in health and social service organizations. It also prepares you for entry into graduate programs in public health, social work, public administration, nonprofit management, and related allied health and social service professions.

You will master the theory and practice of inter-agency collaboration; acquire proficiency in the use of electronic technologies; and develop sound critical-thinking, communication and analytical skills. You will also build a foundation of values and ethics, and cultural competence needed for serving client populations and communities whose backgrounds differ from your own.

The Human Development & Family Science major focuses on human development from infancy through old age. Students will examine how family and community dynamics affect the development of individuals from a diverse range of backgrounds and life experiences. Through fieldwork, program evaluation, and service-learning, students become prepared to work with children, youth, families, and elders in education or social service programs.
