Management faculty introduce you to best practices of leadership, business-government relations, sustainability, critical decision-making, organizational behavior and strategic project management and more while guiding you in how to apply such skills in today's economy. Duquesne's Philosophy department is an academically rigorous, critical, intellectually diverse community internationally recognized and committed to teaching and research in Continental philosophy and the history of philosophy. Our major provides an intensive course of study through which students rigorously engage in logical analysis, conceptual interpretation, and critique of arguments, concepts, and their textual articulations. Our philosophy majors and minors deeply engage the history of philosophy to develop a competency to powerfully engage diverse intellectual positions on issues central to human existence. The engaged faculty of the Philosophy Department mentor our students as they develop a broad competence in the history of philosophy and a thorough understanding of diverse philosophical positions so that they may reflectively pursue whatever path in life they choose.

The M.A. in Communication is a flexible program that draws from the richness of the communication field to allow students to pursue a number of interests and professional goals.

Working closely with the M.A. program directors, students choose courses housed in any of the emphasis areas to develop a unique program of study designed to build particular skill sets and capabilities necessary for an ever-changing marketplace. Developing competencies in a number of areas (including intercultural and interpersonal communication, organizational communication, argumentation, persuasion, event planning, etc.), this emphasis prepares students for careers in both the for-profit and non-profit industries, law, public policy, or business.

All coursework is delivered in traditional, hybrid, and distance learning formats.

Our program is built on the premise that students learn science best by enjoying the successes and failures of research, so we encourage students to begin research as soon as possible and, indeed, students should approach faculty members to investigate beginning research as early as their freshman year. Students interested in beginning research should browse faculty research interests on the web and make an appointment with individual faculty members to discuss their research. Research opportunities are available for academic credit or on a volunteer basis, and occur throughout the year. Occasionally, funding may be available through an individual faculty member’s grant.

Much of this professional orientation in sociology is focused on working with community based organizations and public agencies aimed at social improvements in areas such as health, poverty, and community empowerment.
