The Bachelor of Science degree program in Business Analytics and Intelligence provides course work from the School of Business with a special emphasis in the application of data analytics to business problems. Course offerings emphasize those analytic and critical thinking skills presently needed by business professionals. With the constant development of new technologies, there is a need to efficiently collect and store vast amounts of digital data.

Students in this program will acquire a set of practical data analytic skills. Additionally, students will develop the necessary skills to extract, analyze, organize and present data in a manner that is useful for organizational decision making. The program will require students to develop a high level of quantitative and technological skills. It utilizes the courses from the undergraduate business core, existing courses from the School of Business, and specialized courses in the area of Business Analytics and Intelligence.

Learning Outcomes

• Effectively evaluate and frame the business problem and acquire knowledge and skills of statistical tools available to analyze business problems such as the Business Intelligence Concepts of Online Analytical Processing and Data Mining.
• Utilize critical thinking strategies to evaluate problems, and solutions and make recommendations based on client needs utilizing appropriate analytical tools.
• Demonstrate effective information literacy and communication with valid and reliable research as it relates to the field of Business Analytics and Intelligence.

A music degree from the University of Bridgeport will provide students with the preparation they need to build a career in today’s music world. UB has been training musicians since 1947. We offer an experienced and dedicated faculty of artist-teachers, the kind of personal attention and advising usually found at small colleges, and the sort of spacious and well-designed facilities typically found at large universities.

Our Bachelor of Music degree provides pre-professional training in music, including concentrations in Music Business, Music Education, and Music Performance.

The UB School of Education offers a master’s degree that leads to initial Connecticut certification in several subjects, including Music Teaching Certification (K-12). This program welcomes musicians from a variety of backgrounds who wish to become state-certified in music. The University’s Mathematics program is designed to prepare the student for graduate work in applied mathematics and allied areas, careers in industry (actuarial and quantitative areas of biological and social sciences) and government employment. Depending on their professional aspirations and career plans, students can choose either a B.S. or B.A. degree.

Both degree programs in Mathematics require Computer Science 101 and 102. Students may take additional mathematics electives; those who intend to go to graduate school are advised to obtain competence in a foreign language and to elect one or more 400-level mathematics courses.

By completing the B.A. or B.S. in Mathematics students will:

• Have learned fundamental knowledge of Mathematics and be prepared to pursue graduate study or to work as professional mathematicians

The Bachelor's degree in Business Administration major provides the maximum flexibility in course selection for a student to fulfill both personal and professional goals. Upon completion of University and College core requirements, the student may pursue a myriad of unique combinations of study to satisfy either a general or specific purpose. This includes combining study from two or three of the major disciplines of study within the college including those disciplines not listed in this catalog such as Economics and Management Information Systems, and combinations with other colleges at the University. In all cases, the student’s study program must be approved by the student’s faculty advisor.

Students interested in adding a Teacher Certification to a program in Business Administration can do so. A brief description of the teacher certification requirements appears elsewhere in this catalog under the School of Education section.

The Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration permits a student, upon completion of the core business requirements and prerequisites applicable to all business degrees, to create a unique combination of courses in business or other academic disciplines.

All business courses listed under other majors as well as courses in other academic disciplines such as political economy, psychology or sociology, may be chosen as elements of this major.

The world of professional sports is a multi-billion dollar industry, expanding every year. The BS in Sport Management prepares graduates for careers in athletics from athlete management, team branding, sports marketing and more. A comprehensive curriculum includes legal, ethics, finance, event management and psychology for the sports industry, as well as a business core with courses in accounting, marketing and economics, that will prepare students for a rewarding career in the field of sports management. UB’s Master of Arts, MA in Criminal Justice and Human Security degree program, is designed to help you attain expertise in the worldwide political, cultural, and socioeconomic conditions that contribute to crime and its attenuation. Our program will help you gain insight into the cultural, ethnic, religious and ideological differences often discovered at the root of criminal acts, violence, and terror.

Among some of the in-depth topics covered in this program: domestic, international, and comparative criminal law; transnational crime; cybercrime, and cyberterrorism—all taught by experienced faculty from UB’s School of Public and International Affairs.

Human security, as it relates to modern threats such as terrorism, human trafficking, and ethnocentric violence, will also be explored.

This broader understanding of human rights and its connection to history, global policy, international peace and security, and humanitarian affairs provides a strong foundation on which you will be able to draw correlations and build solutions towards a safer world.

UB’s Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (BSME) degree program combines in-depth studies with lab and project experience to help students apply the principles of motion, force, energy, and materials for the design, development, analysis, manufacturing, testing and maintenance of mechanical systems. In our program, students will develop competence and acquire knowledge in engineering fundamentals, computer-aided engineering tools, communication skills, design of individual components and multi-component systems, manufacturing processes, mechanical systems, professional ethics, and laboratory exploration.

The UB four-year, Bachelor of Science, BS in Interior Design Degree Program prepares graduates with the required experience for the N.C.I.D.Q. examination and state registration. In the course of their studies, Interior Design students learn about gathering design information and problem-solving in a range of actual projects, from residential to commercial design.

Students further develop technical skills for expressing design solutions, using traditional sketching methods,computer aided design (Auto CAD) and 3D simulation computer programs.

Residential, hospitality, corporate offices, retail spaces and health care: all part of the SASD Interior Design Program. Most of these projects are done in collaboration with outside design firms, which gives an added real-life experience to the students and allows them to make professional connections. SASD is an accredited member of the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD),the governing body of undergraduate and graduate art and design schools.

Projects show appropriate selection and implementation of materials, finishes, furniture, and fabrics
• Demonstrate an understanding of aesthetics and scale related to interior space, and of the history and current state of design in the world. Assessment: Projects, papers and presentations for art and history course work. In studio courses, projects that appropriately reference historical precedents and stylistic movements in interior design, bringing forward current thoughts in interior design with reference to the past. Through portfolio projects show working knowledge of scale though appropriate furniture and lighting specifications
• Demonstrate proficiency in selection and use of relevant technologies in design and in using available technologies to produce a design presentation. Assessment: Drawings, including floor plans, elevations, sections, rendered perspectives, and models made with the appropriate technology or software for the final presentation
• Demonstrate an understanding of the cultural and societal connections linking interior design trends and processes as well as a knowledge of business practices and of the market place. Assessment: Project solutions that are culturally and audience appropriate for the problem as posed by the criteria for the project. The accounting curriculum provides an opportunity for students with varied interests to obtain a broad-based understanding of the role of accounting in the measurement and communication of financial and economic data. In the Bachelor's Degree in Accounting - BS program, a number of interdisciplinary courses have been designed for those students wishing a maximum overview of multinational issues in accounting and taxation as well as for those students who intend to pursue more advanced studies in accounting. Accounting students who expect to take the Certified Public Accountant professional examinations should select elective courses with the approval of and in consultation with the Chair of the Accounting Department.

• Students will study professional and regulatory requirements. Additionally students will acquire the accounting foundation that enables them to pursue advanced study required for the successful completion of the CPA exam.

• Students will have the opportunity to apply to the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program where they will gain hands-on, real world experience.

Three degree programs are offered through the UB General Studies program: Associate in Arts (AA), Associate in Science (AS.) and Bachelor of Science (BS) in General Studies. These degrees offer maximum flexibility to explore curricula of the different undergraduate programs at the University.

In the BS in General Studies program, students work with an academic advisor to design an academic program tailored to their specific needs and goals. For example, one might combine a Business Studies concentration that focuses on Marketing and Management with a minor in Mass Communications, or combine a Social Sciences concentration that focuses on Psychology and Sociology with a Human Services minor. The Natural Sciences and Mathematics concentration is frequently used to fulfill the science prerequisites for graduate study in the health professions, leaving a student room to explore the undergraduate curriculum in the Humanities, Social Sciences, and Human Services.

The B.S. in General Studies is an excellent option for transfer students since it allows the maximum number of free electives permitted by the university. Program graduates have attended business, law, and medical school. Many have gone on to careers in education, human services, and community service. This program is offered at our main Bridgeport campus, as well as the Waterbury Center location.
