Overview

The Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering, MS degree program prepares the student for a successful professional career through advanced study in design, development, analysis, manufacturing, and maintenance of mechanical systems for a wide range of industries, including transportation, automation, medical, energy generation, electronic, sports and aerospace.

The program combines core mechanical engineering courses with technical electives that enable the student to increase his/her knowledge and competence in essential skills for Mechanical Engineering while affording sufficient freedom to provide in-depth study in both traditional and contemporary curriculum tracks and explore emerging interdisciplinary areas.

The technical areas supported by the department include General Mechanical Engineering, Design Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering and Management, Mechanics and Materials, Thermal Fluid Systems and Sustainable Energy, Biomechanical Engineering, Mechatronics and Automation, and Sports and Aeronautical Engineering.  The student is required to design an individualized program of study with the help and approval of his/her faculty advisor to meet his/her academic and career goals.

Customized study plans also allow receiving the Mechanical Engineering M.S. degree while pursuing another M.S. degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Technology Management, and MBA.  Two degree students in these two programs should consult their respective advisors to work on their individualized plans.

The department is the home of the CNC Mini Milling Machine Laboratory, Computer Aided Engineering and Rapid Prototyping Laboratory, the Applied Computational Fluid Dynamics Laboratory, and the Electronics Thermal Management Laboratory. Students can also access the other laboratories in the School of Engineering. Some classes are taught by adjunct faculty from local industries and faculty from other engineering departments at UB.

Learning Outcomes
Students in the M.S. Mechanical Engineering Program will be able to:

Work Permit USA

Optional Practical Training or OPT is a period during which students, who have completed their degrees in the USA, are permitted to work for one year on a student visa by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). OPT allows students to work for up to 3 years and develop real-world skills to survive in the competitive jobs market.

It is temporary employment for a period of 12-months that is directly related to the major area of study of an F-1 student. Eligible students have the option to apply for OPT employment authorization before completing their academic studies and/or after completing their academic studies.

A student can participate in three types of Optional Practical Training (OPT):

  1. Pre-Completion OPT: This is temporary employment provided to F-1 students before completion of their course of study.
  2. Post-Completion OPT: This is temporary employment available to F-1 students after completing their course of study.

Our Bachelor of Music degree provides pre-professional training in music, including concentrations in Music Business, Music Education, and Music Performance.

The UB School of Education offers a master’s degree that leads to initial Connecticut certification in several subjects, including Music Teaching Certification (K-12). The undergraduate Electrical Engineering program at the University of Bridgeport prepares students for a career in Electrical Engineering in any of its specializations such as communications, power/renewable energy, signals and systems and VLSI/ electronics. The program includes analysis and design courses that need a strong background in mathematics and science.

Electrical Engineering is one of the largest discipline in engineering which deals with power, controls, signals and systems, materials, communications, micro-nano electronics and more. The Electrical Engineering curriculum at UB prepares our students to be skilled problem solvers, ready for a multitude of career opportunities. Our gradates work in public and private sectors, for almost every industry imaginable, including e-commerce, communication, health-care, the space industry, defense, home-land security, renewable energy and technology startups.

Design and problem solving form the heart of the discipline and a variety of computer aided design (CAD) tools are utilized to facilitate problem-based learning and implementation. The graduate of this program will obtain the basic education in the first three years. The senior year is utilized to explore specific areas of interest. A total of 120 semester hours are required to complete the degree.

The University’s Mathematics program is designed to prepare the student for graduate work in applied mathematics and allied areas, careers in industry (actuarial and quantitative areas of biological and social sciences) and government employment. Depending on their professional aspirations and career plans, students can choose either a B.S. or B.A. degree.

Both degree programs in Mathematics require Computer Science 101 and 102. Students may take additional mathematics electives; those who intend to go to graduate school are advised to obtain competence in a foreign language and to elect one or more 400-level mathematics courses.

The Bachelor in Dental Hygiene BS degree program is completed through the integration of Associate’s degree dental hygiene courses and Bachelor’s degree courses, or by continuing studies after completing an Associate’s degree at an accredited School of Dental Hygiene.

The University of Bridgeport baccalaureate degree completion approach is available to Fones students as well as to graduates of other accredited Dental Hygiene programs. With 60 to 90 transfer credits, a student may achieve a Bachelor of Science degree in Dental Hygiene in two additional years. Education at the baccalaureate level, which combines the professional dental hygiene curriculum with a liberal arts education, enhances the dental hygienist’s opportunities, skills, background knowledge, and professional values.

Upon satisfactory completion of semester hours in the areas of study specified, the student will be recommended for the degree of Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene.

The University of Bridgeport four-year, Bachelor in Science,  BS Industrial Design program emphasizes conceptualization, design, and production of products for personal, home, industrial, and commercial use, ranging from domestic and consumer products to medical, entertainment, and more.
Students learn to design and develop product concepts, visualize them using the latest computer technology, and build models in a well-equipped model shop or computer lab. Students learn presentation skills to demonstrate their creative and unique solutions. Advanced industrial design topics include ergonomics, materials and manufacturing, and marketing.
