Overview
The Environmental Studies major is an interdisciplinary program designed to provide students with the knowledge, skills, and perspectives needed to understand the interactions between human society and the environment. Understanding the ethical and cultural dimensions of our relationship with the environment, as well as the challenges of protecting it, requires insights from multiple perspectives, including the humanities, the social sciences, and the natural sciences. Core courses in the major ensure familiarity with basic principles from these three areas. With this shared core of knowledge, majors will focus their studies on an area of special interest, taking electives and related courses that allow greater specialization. Among the many possibilities are environmental sustainability, issues concerning public policy and environmental justice, and the literary and philosophical legacy of human encounters with the non-human world. A capstone course will allow each student to research a distinct perspective on a contemporary environmental issue. A major in Environmental Studies might lead to a career in a variety of fields, including public policy, environmental education, eco-tourism, marketing or consulting, journalism, or advocacy.
The major leads to a Bachelor of Arts degree in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS) or the College of Agriculture, Health and Natural Resources (CAHNR). The student’s choice of colleges should be made in consultation with faculty and advisors based upon the student’s interests and career goals.

It is temporary employment for a period of 12-months that is directly related to the major area of study of an F-1 student. Eligible students have the option to apply for OPT employment authorization before completing their academic studies and/or after completing their academic studies.
A student can participate in three types of Optional Practical Training (OPT):

Bachelor of Arts in Economics
A student majoring in economics should acquire a thorough grounding in basic principles and methods of analysis, plus a working competence in several of the specialized and applied fields. Examples of such fields are industrial organization, law and economics, money and banking, international trade and finance, public finance, labor economics, health economics, urban and regional economics, and economic development. The major in economics can lead to either a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science degree.
Course work in economics serves a wide variety of vocational objectives. An economics major (supplemented by a rigorous calculus and statistics course sequence) is excellent preparation for graduate work in economics, which qualifies a person for academic, business, or government employment. Majors and others with strong economics training are attractive prospects for business firms and government agencies, and for professional graduate study in business or public policy. An economics background is especially desirable for the study and practice of law. The economics B.S. is recommended for students interested in professions that call for quantitative skills. The B.S. is especially recommended for Honors students and students considering graduate school in economics or other quantitative areas.

Bachelor of Music with concentration in Composition
UConn's bachelor of music degree with an emphasis in composition is intended for students who demonstrate an aptitude for creative thinking and expression through musical composition. Students will be exposed to multiple contemporary techniques and genres and will be encouraged to develop their own compositional style.
The composition degree complements the jazz program, which focuses on jazz composition and arranging.
Student composers will have access to student performers and performance opportunities for their music through existing large and small ensembles. They will also be exposed to major performing artists and ensembles that visit the University of Connecticut under the presentation of the Jorgensen Center for the Performing Arts. In addition, student composers will contribute an emphasis on contemporary music making that will have a positive effect on the musical life of the Department of Music.

Bachelor of Arts in Physics (STEM)
Physics, a fundamental and quantitative science, involves the study of matter and energy, and interactions between them. The subject is generally divided into mechanics, electricity and magnetism, statistical and thermal physics, and quantum physics. These form the foundation for present-day research areas, which include astrophysics, atomic, molecular and optical physics, condensed matter physics, nuclear physics, and the physics of particles and fields. In addition to a knowledge of physics, students gain a rigorous training in logical thinking and quantitative problem solving. An education in physics can also provide an entry into many other fields such as biophysics, geophysics, medical physics, and engineering, as well as into less technical fields such as secondary education, technical sales, and science writing. Many students have also found that physics is an excellent preparation for the study of medicine, dentistry, or law.

Bachelor of Arts in Theatre Studies
The Theatre Studies BA is similar to most of UConn's liberal arts degrees in students take approximately 40% of their college credits within their major field. On the introductory, 1000 course level, BA students must take the same core courses required of all Dramatic Arts majors. In addition, BA students elect a further 18 credits of courses in dramatic arts at the 3000-4000 level. The remaining 60% of the BA curriculum consists mainly of liberal arts courses, including the University's broad-ranging General Education Requirements and the election of 12 credits at the 3000-4000 level in a related group of courses outside the department.
Thanks to its special combination of academic studies in theatre and production experience through the Connecticut Repertory Theatre, the BA in Theatre Studies provides an excellent foundation for graduate work in theatre or other academic fields, as well as a foundation for professional careers in directing, playwriting, dramatic criticism, stage management, theatre management, and a host of other related fields within the theatre, film, and television industries.
The following is a list of the dramatic arts courses you will take in order to complete your BA in Theatre Studies. “Related” courses are non-Dramatic Arts courses.

Bachelor of Arts in Sociology
Sociology is an analytic discipline concerned with understanding people as creators of, and participants in, society. The field is broadly concerned with the study of modern society and its social organizations, institutions, groups, and social roles. Sociologists study social influences on human behavior, such as sexuality, ethnic identity, and religious belief, and how individuals become members of families and communities. The field is also concerned with social problems, especially all forms of prejudice, discrimination, and inequality, and with poverty, crime, violence, and the threatened environment. Sociologists emphasize sources of social problems in the organization of society, public policies for their alleviation, and today’s questions of social justice. Finally, they study how individuals, both alone and working in groups, can change the society in which they live.

Bachelor of Arts in French
Students can enter the Program either from the beginning classes of our language program or, if they already have enough French, move right into upper-level courses. The major requires the completion of 30 credits at the 3000 level. (Major.doc)
Our program gives our majors a choice of specialization: French Cultural and Literary Studies or French Studies for the Global Community.
Track I, French Studies for the Global Community, is built on the premise that, in the era of globalization, the role of the economy permeates all aspects of contemporary cultural and political life. It is posited on the notion that as culture becomes more global, it reaches across diverse cultures and languages. This is one of the reasons why translation and the theory of translation are particularly crucial components of this tract, as necessary complement to the studies of business, media, and world culture generally.
Track II, French Cultural and Literary Studies, focuses on literature in new ways, in keeping with recent reflection on the way literature actually functions in society. Controversial issues that have shaped the debates in French culture include sexuality, gender, race, the value of popular culture, the role of film, and video, electronic writing, and the paradoxes of globalization, among others. The pleasure of reading and writing about literature is an essential feature of this track, but the understanding of literature is enhanced when viewing it within a larger sociopolitical and cultural context.
