The Department offers both Bachelor of Science and a Bachelor of Arts degrees in Mathematics, Applied Mathematical Sciences, Mathematics-Statistics, and Mathematics-Actuarial Science, and Mathematics-Actuarial Science-Finance, and a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics-Physics. The Bachelor of Science program provides in-depth training in Mathematics as preparation for graduate study or for participation in scientific and engineering teams in government, industry, or research laboratories. The Bachelor of Arts degree is designed to provide training in contemporary mathematics without the depth and concentrated specialization required for the Bachelor of Science program. The Bachelor of Arts in Music with no emphasis is ideal for students looking for comprehensive study in music and is well suited to students looking to pursue a dual degree. While still requiring intensive study in music history, theory and aural skills, applied lessons, and ensemble work, this degree offering allows for a more flexible schedule. The Bachelor of Arts in Music thoroughly prepares students wishing to pursue graduate degrees in music, as well.

The Bachelor of Arts with a major in music has undergone a significant curricular revision that allows students to pursue their desire to study music and at the same time pursue other academic interests, including majors or minors in other departments and programs within the University.

The Italian major allows students to focus on Italian literary studies, but also allows them to take advanced coursework in Italian language, communication, and cultural studies. (All 3000-level coursework on Italian cinema may also be counted towards the minor in Film Studies). Italian courses comprise two main groups:

Students majoring in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology may opt for either a Bachelor of Arts degree or Bachelor of Science degree. Both B.A. and B.S. degree candidates must complete the following courses in addition to the general CLAS requirements for these degrees: BIOL 1107 and BIOL 1108 or 1110; and CHEM 1127Q and 1128Q; or CHEM 1124Q, 1125Q, and 1126Q.

Music theory is concerned with how music works, and uses analysis to identify musical relationships, structures, and the procedures composers follow in the process of creating music. In seeking a deeper understanding of music, theorists employ analytic methods and modes of inquiry similar to those used in other disciplines, such as language study, literary criticism, mathematics, and psychology.

Whereas some study of music theory is required for all music majors, those with an emphasis in theory at the undergraduate level combine studies in performance, history, and other subjects with upper-level courses in music analysis and related topics. Advanced study in theory is useful for performers, conductors, composers, and other musicians who seek to elevate the level of their artistry.

UConn's bachelor of music degree with an emphasis in composition is intended for students who demonstrate an aptitude for creative thinking and expression through musical composition. Students will be exposed to multiple contemporary techniques and genres and will be encouraged to develop their own compositional style.

The composition degree complements the jazz program, which focuses on jazz composition and arranging.

Student composers will have access to student performers and performance opportunities for their music through existing large and small ensembles. They will also be exposed to major performing artists and ensembles that visit the University of Connecticut under the presentation of the Jorgensen Center for the Performing Arts. In addition, student composers will contribute an emphasis on contemporary music making that will have a positive effect on the musical life of the Department of Music.

The biological sciences are organized into three departments: the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology (EEB), the Department of Molecular and Cell Biology (MCB), and the Department of Physiology and Neurobiology (PNB). Introductory level courses are listed under General Biology (BIOL).

The Bachelor of Science degree is generally recommended for students planning a scientific career in biology, but the Bachelor of Arts degree in Biological Sciences allows a richer liberal arts program and provides good preparation for many careers, including subsequent graduate study.

Biomedical engineers apply engineering methods, science and technology to problems in medicine and biology. Biomedical Engineering is a growing field that will continue to have a significant impact on health care. In fact, many feel that biomedical engineering will be the technological area with the most impact on people’s lives in the 21st century. A minor in Biomedical engineering is offered for students at the University of Connecticut who wish to expand their knowledge in the field. Biomedical engineering involves learning about biology in new ways and developing new tools to diagnose and treat disease and to repair or replace diseased organs.

Many students select biomedical engineering to be of service to people and for the excitement of working in a health field. Additionally, biomedical engineering provides excellent preparation for entrance into medical school. Biomedical engineering is interdisciplinary; that is, biomedical engineers often work with other medical health care professionals as members of a team. Exciting advances in medicine, such as the artificial hearts, pacemakers, medical imaging techniques, lasers, prosthetic implants, life support systems, and devices that help the paralyzed walk, have been the result of team efforts by biomedical engineers and other professionals. In addition, bioengineers have developed new processes for manufacturing products for the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, an example being humulin, or human insulin, the first product based on recombinant DNA technology

The Human Development and Family Sciences (HDFS) program concentrates its research, instruction, and community outreach on a multidisciplinary understanding of a healthy development and wellbeing of individuals and families over the lifespan, interactions and processes within families, and individuals and families in societal and cultural contexts.
