For the Linguistics and Psychology joint major, specifically required linguistics courses are: LING 2010Q and 3000 or 3110, and at least two out of the other 2000 level or above linguistics courses; and specifically required psychology courses are: PSYC 2100Q or 2100WQ and 3500, and at least two out of PSYC 2400, 2500, 2501, 3501, 3550W, and 3552. All students in the Linguistics/Psychology Major are strongly encouraged to take LING 5010/PSYC 5500 in their senior year. A minimum of four courses (12 credits) at the 2000 level or above from each department is required. For this joint major, exit requirements for information literacy will be satisfied by passing LING 3000 or 3110. The exit requirement for writing in the major will be satisfied by passing any W course in LING or PSYC at the 2000-level or above that has been approved by the student’s advisor for inclusion in the plan of study.

Work Permit USA

Optional Practical Training or OPT is a period during which students, who have completed their degrees in the USA, are permitted to work for one year on a student visa by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). OPT allows students to work for up to 3 years and develop real-world skills to survive in the competitive jobs market.

It is temporary employment for a period of 12-months that is directly related to the major area of study of an F-1 student. Eligible students have the option to apply for OPT employment authorization before completing their academic studies and/or after completing their academic studies.

A student can participate in three types of Optional Practical Training (OPT):

  1. Pre-Completion OPT: This is temporary employment provided to F-1 students before completion of their course of study.
  2. Post-Completion OPT: This is temporary employment available to F-1 students after completing their course of study.
  3. 24 Month STEM Extension: Students enrolled in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) courses can a 24-month extension after their initial Post-Completion OPT authorization.

Students majoring in Pathobiology focus on animal health and diseases and their relationship to people and the environment. Students can prepare to enter veterinary medical schools or medical schools. The Department of Literatures, Cultures, and Languages offers courses in Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Spanish, Classical Languages (Ancient Greek, Latin, and Biblical Hebrew) and selected critical languages. Students may major in Chinese Studies, Classics and Ancient Mediterranean Studies, French and Francophone Studies, German Studies, Italian Literary and Cultural Studies, Judaic Studies, and Spanish Studies. A student may double major in two of the above majors. Students will gain knowledge of the Literature, Culture, and applied Language skills that are required for teaching, business, diplomatic or governmental work, and research in graduate or undergraduate study of the culture and literature that is associated with these languages.

Art History at UCONN focuses on art’s transformative capacity to change the way we see and understand the world. Art History emphasizes not only the aesthetic and historical meanings of art, visual culture, and objects, but also their ability to address issues of social justice and social significance in our increasingly visual world. Art History endows core skills—critical observing, thinking, and writing—for seeing a better world. There is no field, no career, no area of work that is not enhanced by a degree in Art History. Skills honed by study in Art History are skills needed in all walks of life. Graduates succeed in arts professions such as curatorships, art conservation, gallery and museum directorships and management, arts administration, art critics, and non-profit work. The biological sciences are organized into three departments: the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology (EEB), the Department of Molecular and Cell Biology (MCB), and the Department of Physiology and Neurobiology (PNB). Introductory level courses are listed under General Biology (BIOL).

The Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) program in Art & Design is designed to provide an enriched educational environment that develops and nurtures the full range of capabilities necessary for a career in the visual arts. Skills addressed include: a mastery of requisite technical skills, the use of technology across the curriculum, experience in critical and creative problem solving, visual literacy, knowledge of historical modes of expression in the visual arts, and mastery of written modes of expression.

After Foundations courses, students declare a concentration in which to focus their advanced studies. Once a concentration is declared students follow that concentration's prescribed Plan of Study. The Design/Tech BFA program prepares candidates for entry-level positions in the areas of design, management, technology and craft professions in theatre and other parts of the entertainment industry. Upon completing this program, some students advance to graduate-level professional training at a variety of institutions throughout the country. Undergraduate Design/Tech majors have the opportunity to study and work in all areas, including Scenery Design, Construction & Rigging, Costume Design and Construction, Lighting Design, Properties Design & Construction, and Sound Design. Coursework combines with practical work on CRT productions. Advanced undergraduates with particular promise often serve as assistant designers or designers for CRT Studio Works productions.

Outstanding undergraduates have even worked as principal designers of CRT Mainstage productions. Informal assessments by the Design/Technical faculty in the student's freshman and sophomore years are helpful in providing feedback, sharpening focus and encouraging candidates with demonstrated an aptitude to continue in the program. Junior and senior BFA Design/Tech majors participate in portfolio reviews at the end of each semester and are encouraged to enter U/RTA (University and Regional Theatre Association) Final Competitions in New York City in January to compete for positions in Professional Regional Theatres and member graduate school programs throughout the country.

Unlike many fields of study in which students take few courses in their major during their early semesters, BFA Dramatic Arts Students begin intensive training in their chosen field immediately upon entering UConn. In a BFA program, approximately half of your college courses are in your chosen field of study. Most of the remaining credits you will take constitute the university's General Education Requirements in writing, math, history, humanities, science and social science. You will take from one to three general education courses per semester, depending on your semester standing.
