Anthropology studies human beings of all times and places. It examines human biological, cultural and social similarities and differences, and tries to explain them. Because of its broad perspective — which stresses writing, critical thinking, and social analysis — anthropology provides an excellent preparation for a variety of professional and business careers. Anthropology can also be an integral part of the training for life that is the goal of the University’s liberal arts program.

The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Acting at the University of Connecticut is an intensive, conservatory-style program designed to prepare students for direct entry into performance careers in all areas of professional theatre, including television and film. Students are also thoroughly prepared to continue acting studies at the graduate, Master of Fine Arts level. Combining a four-year sequence of acting classes with extensive voice and movement training and a well-rounded course of studies in the art of theatre, the BFA Acting Program also offers outstanding performance opportunities through the Connecticut Repertory Theatre (CRT), the performance wing of the Department of Dramatic Arts. At the CRT, students work with professional actors and directors on the way to earning membership points in Actor's Equity, the American union for professional stage actors and stage managers.

The Department offers both Bachelor of Science and a Bachelor of Arts degrees in Mathematics, Applied Mathematical Sciences, Mathematics-Statistics, and Mathematics-Actuarial Science, and Mathematics-Actuarial Science-Finance, and a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics-Physics. The Bachelor of Science program provides in-depth training in Mathematics as preparation for graduate study or for participation in scientific and engineering teams in government, industry, or research laboratories. The Bachelor of Arts degree is designed to provide training in contemporary mathematics without the depth and concentrated specialization required for the Bachelor of Science program. The Natural Resources undergraduate major encompass interdisciplinary sciences that prepare students to protect, conserve, and manage the environment. Courses span the breadth of natural resources and the environment. Including a focus on biological and ecosystem sciences courses that teach students about life and nature on earth, physical science courses that emphasize the processes and nutrients that sustain a healthy planet and courses in human dimensions that provide an understanding of the diverse perspectives of stakeholder groups involved in natural resource management. 

This degree is jointly sponsored by the Computer Science and Engineering Department and the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department. The Computer Engineering degree is designed to meet the rapidly expanding demand for engineers with strong design skills in this field. The program emphasizes the design and fabrication of computing devices, the inclusion of computers in real-time systems, and the underlying computer technology involved in computer and communication networks.

The first two years of study are the same as for the Computer Science and Engineering degree and the Electrical and Computer Engineering degree. It includes core coursework in mathematics, science, and computer and electrical engineering. It also includes most of the general education requirements. The junior and senior years comprise a balanced curriculum in computer science augmented with courses in digital systems. Focus areas during the upper division include real-time computing systems, communication and computing networks, and VLSI design/fabrication.

An undergraduate degree in Allied Health Sciences prepares you for immediate employment in a variety of health fields including case management/patient care coordination, health education, medical billing and account management, health marketing and sales, laboratory research, health insurance administration. Your degree will also prepare you for admission to graduate and/or professional schools and programs that require a bachelor's degree (e.g. medical school, dental school, physician assistant, physical therapy, public health, health promotion sciences, etc.). You'll choose a standard plan (most flexible) or one of four concentration areas and tailor your plan of study to your specific goals and professional interests.

Your assigned academic advisor will work with you to develop a plan of study that includes university general education requirements and coursework covering a broad range of health and healthcare topics that also fulfill graduate health program admission requirements. Specific requirements will vary based on your intended concentration and career path. Courses are available in a broad range of disciplines including biostatistics, human physiology, immunology, environmental health, ergonomics, public health, health management and administration, healthcare systems, counseling and teaching, research methods, human genetics, nutrition, law and ethics, and more.

The Design/Tech BFA program prepares candidates for entry-level positions in the areas of design, management, technology and craft professions in theatre and other parts of the entertainment industry. Upon completing this program, some students advance to graduate-level professional training at a variety of institutions throughout the country. Undergraduate Design/Tech majors have the opportunity to study and work in all areas, including Scenery Design, Construction & Rigging, Costume Design and Construction, Lighting Design, Properties Design & Construction, and Sound Design. Coursework combines with practical work on CRT productions. Advanced undergraduates with particular promise often serve as assistant designers or designers for CRT Studio Works productions.

Outstanding undergraduates have even worked as principal designers of CRT Mainstage productions. Informal assessments by the Design/Technical faculty in the student's freshman and sophomore years are helpful in providing feedback, sharpening focus and encouraging candidates with demonstrated an aptitude to continue in the program. Junior and senior BFA Design/Tech majors participate in portfolio reviews at the end of each semester and are encouraged to enter U/RTA (University and Regional Theatre Association) Final Competitions in New York City in January to compete for positions in Professional Regional Theatres and member graduate school programs throughout the country.

Unlike many fields of study in which students take few courses in their major during their early semesters, BFA Dramatic Arts Students begin intensive training in their chosen field immediately upon entering UConn. In a BFA program, approximately half of your college courses are in your chosen field of study. Most of the remaining credits you will take constitute the university's General Education Requirements in writing, math, history, humanities, science and social science. You will take from one to three general education courses per semester, depending on your semester standing.

Management Information Systems (MIS), housed in the Operations and Information Management Department, is a fast growing major that teaches skills that lie at the interface between business functions and information technologies. These include highly sought after proficiencies that help identify technology improvements in business practices including accounting, finance, marketing, operations and everything in between, formulate creative solutions, manage teams that will implement solutions and understand business requirements with the perspective of technologies. Students who major in MIS are eligible to apply to the 4+1 Analytics Track within the Master of Science in Business Analytics and Project Management (MSBAPM) Program.

The Human Development and Family Sciences (HDFS) program concentrates its research, instruction, and community outreach on a multidisciplinary understanding of a healthy development and wellbeing of individuals and families over the lifespan, interactions and processes within families, and individuals and families in societal and cultural contexts.
