Overview
The Design/Tech BFA program prepares candidates for entry-level positions in the areas of design, management, technology and craft professions in theatre and other parts of the entertainment industry. Upon completing this program, some students advance to graduate-level professional training at a variety of institutions throughout the country. Undergraduate Design/Tech majors have the opportunity to study and work in all areas, including Scenery Design, Construction & Rigging, Costume Design and Construction, Lighting Design, Properties Design & Construction, and Sound Design. Coursework combines with practical work on CRT productions. Advanced undergraduates with particular promise often serve as assistant designers or designers for CRT Studio Works productions.
Outstanding undergraduates have even worked as principal designers of CRT Mainstage productions. Informal assessments by the Design/Technical faculty in the student's freshman and sophomore years are helpful in providing feedback, sharpening focus and encouraging candidates with demonstrated an aptitude to continue in the program. Junior and senior BFA Design/Tech majors participate in portfolio reviews at the end of each semester and are encouraged to enter U/RTA (University and Regional Theatre Association) Final Competitions in New York City in January to compete for positions in Professional Regional Theatres and member graduate school programs throughout the country.
Unlike many fields of study in which students take few courses in their major during their early semesters, BFA Dramatic Arts Students begin intensive training in their chosen field immediately upon entering UConn. In a BFA program, approximately half of your college courses are in your chosen field of study. Most of the remaining credits you will take constitute the university's General Education Requirements in writing, math, history, humanities, science and social science. You will take from one to three general education courses per semester, depending on your semester standing.

Optional Practical Training or OPT is a period during which students, who have completed their degrees in the USA, are permitted to work for one year on a student visa by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). OPT allows students to work for up to 3 years and develop real-world skills to survive in the competitive jobs market.
It is temporary employment for a period of 12-months that is directly related to the major area of study of an F-1 student. Eligible students have the option to apply for OPT employment authorization before completing their academic studies and/or after completing their academic studies.

Bachelor of Science Engineering in Biomedical Engineering (STEM)
Biomedical engineers apply engineering methods, science and technology to problems in medicine and biology. Biomedical Engineering is a growing field that will continue to have a significant impact on health care. In fact, many feel that biomedical engineering will be the technological area with the most impact on people’s lives in the 21st century. A minor in Biomedical engineering is offered for students at the University of Connecticut who wish to expand their knowledge in the field. Biomedical engineering involves learning about biology in new ways and developing new tools to diagnose and treat disease and to repair or replace diseased organs.
Many students select biomedical engineering to be of service to people and for the excitement of working in a health field. Additionally, biomedical engineering provides excellent preparation for entrance into medical school. Biomedical engineering is interdisciplinary; that is, biomedical engineers often work with other medical health care professionals as members of a team. Exciting advances in medicine, such as the artificial hearts, pacemakers, medical imaging techniques, lasers, prosthetic implants, life support systems, and devices that help the paralyzed walk, have been the result of team efforts by biomedical engineers and other professionals. In addition, bioengineers have developed new processes for manufacturing products for the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, an example being humulin, or human insulin, the first product based on recombinant DNA technology

Bachelor of Arts in Cognitive Science
Cognitive Science explores the process and content of thought as observed in individuals, distributed through communities, manifested in the structure and meaning of language, modeled by algorithms, and contemplated by philosophies of mind.
Its models are formulated using concepts drawn from many disciplines, including psychology, linguistics, logic, communication sciences/disorders, computer science, anthropology, and philosophy, and they are tested using evidence from psychological experiments, clinical studies, field studies, computer simulations, and neurophysiological observation.This program is intended to prepare students for graduate training in cognitive science and related disciplines or to work in the information sciences.The distribution requirements ensure that students will acquire a truly interdisciplinary education.The research and formal systems requirements provide basic knowledge concerning the experimental and theoretical foundations of cognitive science.Finally, majors are encouraged to learn about theory building and testing in a variety of natural and physical sciences. The UConn Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering offers two major degrees that are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, http://www.abet.org.
Accreditation is a process to assure you that the Civil or Environmental Engineering degree you earn at UConn can be trusted to prepare you for your career objectives, including gaining employment as an engineer after graduating and eventually becoming licensed as a Professional Engineer (PE).

The Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences major is a pre-professional program within the liberal arts and sciences curriculum. This B.S. program is suitable for students with interests that integrate the organismal, cellular and subcellular levels of biology, including the areas of biochemistry, cell biology, developmental biology, genetics and genomics, and microbiology, as well as their applications in biotechnology and medical science.
Many opportunities for independent research projects in these areas are open for undergraduates. BIOL 1107 is required in addition to the general CLAS requirements for the B.S. degree.

The first four semesters of the curriculum provide the building blocks of knowledge in the arts, humanities and the sciences, and also provide a foundation for entry into the Junior-Senior curriculum. Upon admission, students are assigned a faculty advisor who assists them in planning their course of study to meet the requirements of the nursing major. The undergraduate major in Urban and Community Studies is an interdisciplinary program in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences with a focus on educating citizens on the multiple dimensions of urban and community life and preparing students for careers in public and community service as well as graduate study in social work, public administration, law, planning, public health, or other related areas.
The major has three parts. First, students receive a broad education in the study of cities, suburbs, neighborhoods and communities through core courses in three fields drawn from Economics, Geography, History, Political Science, Public Policy, Sociology, and Urban and Community Studies. Second, students acquire a solid foundation in analytical techniques such as statistical analysis, survey research, geographic information systems, qualitative methods, or archival research.
