The Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) program in Art & Design is designed to provide an enriched educational environment that develops and nurtures the full range of capabilities necessary for a career in the visual arts. Skills addressed include: a mastery of requisite technical skills, the use of technology across the curriculum, experience in critical and creative problem solving, visual literacy, knowledge of historical modes of expression in the visual arts, and mastery of written modes of expression.

After Foundations courses, students declare a concentration in which to focus their advanced studies. Once a concentration is declared students follow that concentration's prescribed Plan of Study. Students are able and encouraged to take advanced courses across all the studio concentrations. Specific concentration requirements can be found on each concentration's page.

Ecology, people, place and community are just a few of the words landscape architects use everyday as they strive to solve the complex problems of planning vibrant communities and designing places of value while protecting and restoring our natural resources.

150 years ago Connecticut’s own Frederick Law Olmsted called for the conservation of the Yosemite Valley, designed Central Park, solved the flooding of Boston’s Back Bay Fens, planned campuses across the United States and introduced the world to landscape architecture.

Today landscape architects are creating the High Line Trail, restoring landscape systems in the Lower Don Lands of Toronto, designing the 9/11 Memorial, planning Olympic villages and remaking campuses and communities around the world.

The Human Development and Family Sciences (HDFS) program concentrates its research, instruction, and community outreach on a multidisciplinary understanding of a healthy development and wellbeing of individuals and families over the lifespan, interactions and processes within families, and individuals and families in societal and cultural contexts. Individualized mentorship, innovation and leadership, diversity and equity, and applied/translational science are the fundamental values that guide UConn's commitment to excellence in research, teaching, and public engagement.

The Department offers both Bachelor of Science and a Bachelor of Arts degrees in Mathematics, Applied Mathematical Sciences, Mathematics-Statistics, and Mathematics-Actuarial Science, and Mathematics-Actuarial Science-Finance, and a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics-Physics. The Bachelor of Science program provides in-depth training in Mathematics as preparation for graduate study or for participation in scientific and engineering teams in government, industry, or research laboratories. The Bachelor of Arts degree is designed to provide training in contemporary mathematics without the depth and concentrated specialization required for the Bachelor of Science program. The Exercise Science (BS) major provides a comprehensive understanding of exercise, human performance, and healthy living. This major prepares graduates for further study of exercise science as well as healthcare professions including medicine, physician assistant studies, physical therapy, and athletic training. Students complete coursework in general education, kinesiology, cognate areas (outside, but supportive of, Exercise Science), with an emphasis on basic science courses.

The curriculum is dedicated to preparing students both professionally and academically for their future career. A high degree of excellence is expected in all aspects of career development, including practical and academic success.

Incoming Freshman students are directly admitted to the Exercise Science program. Admission is highly competitive; students with strong math and science preparation will be given preference.

The Department of Linguistics offers majors, the Department of Philosophy in Linguistics and Philosophy

Linguistics and Philosophy
For the Linguistics and Philosophy joint major, required linguistics courses are LING 3410Q, either LING 3000Q or 3110, and at least two additional LING courses at the 2000 level or above; and required philosophy courses are PHIL 3241 and at least three additional PHIL courses at the 2000 level or above. For this joint major, exit requirements for information literacy will be satisfied by passing LING 3000Q or 3110. The exit requirement for writing in the major will be satisfied by passing any W course in LING or PHIL at the 2000-level or above that has been approved by the student’s advisor for inclusion in the plan of study.

Digital Media and Design majors must maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.7 for all graded coursework at the University of Connecticut. Digital Media and Design majors must maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 based on all courses required within the Digital Media and Design majors.

At the end of each semester, students with a grade point deficiency will be placed on departmental scholastic probation. During the subsequent semester, the student will have the opportunity to improve their standing. In the event that the student’s standing does not rise to the minimum level, they will be subject to dismissal from the Digital Media and Design major.

The Bachelor of Arts (BA) program in Art provides you with the best of two worlds: the intimacy of a small and vibrant art school, situated within an intellectually engaging major research university. Here it is possible to follow your passions for studio art in its many forms, art history, design, or visual storytelling (in still and moving images), while also exploring literature, history, sciences, and so much more. Students have access to a wide array of art-making and exhibition spaces, as well as emergent and convergent methods and technologies.

The Bachelor of Music in Instrumental Performance is ideal for students interested in pursuing an intensive, conservatory-like undergraduate career in performance. Students are given various and unique opportunities to hone their craft. In addition to advanced applied study, this program provides foundational study in music theory, history, instrumental pedagogy, and conducting, among other areas. With the Bachelor of Music degree comes frequent opportunities to perform, including but not limited to: required half and whole degree recitals, solo performances in convocation, performance in master classes, ensemble performances, and chamber music.

It is the primary objective of the Vocal Performance program to seek committed and promising young singers and to develop in them a firm foundation in the vocal arts of performance and pedagogy. Our program utilizes training in art song and opera to foster the development of a lifetime commitment to creativity and communication, nurturing the responsibility in our students of contributing to the society in which they live. Our faculty work cooperatively to develop our young artists into working professionals. Through performances of operas and opera-scenes programs, song festivals, public recitals, master classes, and community-outreach programs, students acquire the needed experience and growth necessary for attaining a career in the arts.

Our working relationships with opera companies, interdisciplinary performance symposiums, and international collaborations with conservatories abroad augment the educational experience of our students and assist them in building a network of professional contacts before embarking on their future careers. Artists and professionals with whom students have had the opportunity to observe, meet, and even work with include: sopranos Renee Fleming and Leontyne Price; mezzo-sopranos Joyce DiDonato and Denyce Graves; tenors Jerry Hadley and Anthony Laciura; conductors Willie Anthony Waters and Doris Kosloff; stage director Gina Lapinski; repetiteur Dennis Giauque; composer Jake Heggie; Joseph McClain, founder and former director of the Austin Lyric Opera; Anthony Tommasini, chief music critic of the New York Times; and Marc A. Sorca, president and CEO of OPERA America.

Productions on campus, as well as televised performances, and other forms of outreach support our related goal of bringing the arts to the greater public by making them accessible to the community. These events provide valuable performing experience to our students while also teaching them the joy of enriching others’ lives through creative expression.
