Overview

The UConn Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering offers two major degrees that are  accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, http://www.abet.org.

Accreditation is a process to assure you that the Civil or Environmental Engineering degree you earn at UConn can be trusted to prepare you for your career objectives, including gaining employment as an engineer after graduating and eventually becoming licensed as a Professional Engineer (PE).

Work Permit USA

Optional Practical Training or OPT is a period during which students, who have completed their degrees in the USA, are permitted to work for one year on a student visa by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). OPT allows students to work for up to 3 years and develop real-world skills to survive in the competitive jobs market.

It is temporary employment for a period of 12-months that is directly related to the major area of study of an F-1 student. Eligible students have the option to apply for OPT employment authorization before completing their academic studies and/or after completing their academic studies.

A student can participate in three types of Optional Practical Training (OPT):

  1. Pre-Completion OPT: This is temporary employment provided to F-1 students before completion of their course of study.
  2. Post-Completion OPT: This is temporary employment available to F-1 students after completing their course of study.
  3. 24 Month STEM Extension: Students enrolled in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) courses can a 24-month extension after their initial Post-Completion OPT authorization.

It is the primary objective of the Vocal Performance program to seek committed and promising young singers and to develop in them a firm foundation in the vocal arts of performance and pedagogy. Our program utilizes training in art song and opera to foster the development of a lifetime commitment to creativity and communication, nurturing the responsibility in our students of contributing to the society in which they live. Our faculty work cooperatively to develop our young artists into working professionals. Through performances of operas and opera-scenes programs, song festivals, public recitals, master classes, and community-outreach programs, students acquire the needed experience and growth necessary for attaining a career in the arts.

Our working relationships with opera companies, interdisciplinary performance symposiums, and international collaborations with conservatories abroad augment the educational experience of our students and assist them in building a network of professional contacts before embarking on their future careers. Artists and professionals with whom students have had the opportunity to observe, meet, and even work with include: sopranos Renee Fleming and Leontyne Price; mezzo-sopranos Joyce DiDonato and Denyce Graves; tenors Jerry Hadley and Anthony Laciura; conductors Willie Anthony Waters and Doris Kosloff; stage director Gina Lapinski; repetiteur Dennis Giauque; composer Jake Heggie; Joseph McClain, founder and former director of the Austin Lyric Opera; Anthony Tommasini, chief music critic of the New York Times; and Marc A. Sorca, president and CEO of OPERA America.

Productions on campus, as well as televised performances, and other forms of outreach support our related goal of bringing the arts to the greater public by making them accessible to the community. These events provide valuable performing experience to our students while also teaching them the joy of enriching others’ lives through creative expression.

This program produces graduates with a broad understanding of both computing principles and computing practice. The program emphasizes the fundamental computing models through the design and analysis of algorithms and software. Included in the program is coursework in a computing application area outside of the School of Engineering such as business or bioinformatics. The program is supported by study in mathematics, science, and engineering. Students gain hands-on experience in the laboratory courses accompanying classroom work, and develop design skills in course work beginning in the first two years. Design experience continues in junior and senior years in the areas of software engineering and in applications areas of the student’s choosing, culminating in the one semester Senior Design Project course.

This degree is jointly sponsored by the Computer Science and Engineering Department and the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department. The Computer Engineering degree is designed to meet the rapidly expanding demand for engineers with strong design skills in this field. The program emphasizes the design and fabrication of computing devices, the inclusion of computers in real-time systems, and the underlying computer technology involved in computer and communication networks.

The first two years of study are the same as for the Computer Science and Engineering degree and the Electrical and Computer Engineering degree. It includes core coursework in mathematics, science, and computer and electrical engineering. It also includes most of the general education requirements. The junior and senior years comprise a balanced curriculum in computer science augmented with courses in digital systems. Focus areas during the upper division include real-time computing systems, communication and computing networks, and VLSI design/fabrication.

This program produces graduates with a broad perspective in both software and hardware topics pertinent to computing systems. It provides the foundation and specialized knowledge necessary to analyze, design and evaluate system software, utility programs and software-hardware architectures. The program is supported by study in mathematics, science, and engineering. This allows students to design hardware and software solutions for a wide variety of application domains. Students gain hands-on experience in the laboratory courses accompanying classroom work, and develop design skills in course work beginning in the first two years. Anthropology studies human beings of all times and places. It examines human biological, cultural and social similarities and differences, and tries to explain them. Because of its broad perspective — which stresses writing, critical thinking, and social analysis — anthropology provides an excellent preparation for a variety of professional and business careers. The Agriculture and Natural Resources major is an interdisciplinary major designed for students who want broad training in agricultural, environmental, and/or health sciences, with content that does not readily align with any one department or major. Students work with advisors to develop and complete a personalized and interdepartmental baccalaureate program based on their educational and career interests and goals. Courses selected for this major will include both introductory and advanced material from multiple departments in the College of Agriculture, Health and Natural Resources, as well as prerequisite and related knowledge and experiences in other disciplines.

The UConn School of Business Center for Real Estate is a top program for real estate research and is regularly ranked among the top 10 real estate programs in the U.S. Its impressive academic credentials are matched by a strong emphasis on real-world problem solving, and our activities embrace many disciplines including finance, statistics, economics and geography. The Center for Real Estate offers scholarship opportunities, resume book and job opportunities, and industry and student networking through the Real Estate Society field trips. The Center functions as an academic partner to the real estate industry. Many UConn Real Estate students begin their professional careers as interns, placed with the Center's assistance. The Bachelor of Music in Instrumental Performance is ideal for students interested in pursuing an intensive, conservatory-like undergraduate career in performance. Students are given various and unique opportunities to hone their craft. In addition to advanced applied study, this program provides foundational study in music theory, history, instrumental pedagogy, and conducting, among other areas. With the Bachelor of Music degree comes frequent opportunities to perform, including but not limited to: required half and whole degree recitals, solo performances in convocation, performance in master classes, ensemble performances, and chamber music.

The Department offers both Bachelor of Science and a Bachelor of Arts degrees in Mathematics, Applied Mathematical Sciences, Mathematics-Statistics, and Mathematics-Actuarial Science, and Mathematics-Actuarial Science-Finance, and a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics-Physics. The Bachelor of Science program provides in-depth training in Mathematics as preparation for graduate study or for participation in scientific and engineering teams in government, industry, or research laboratories. The Bachelor of Arts degree is designed to provide training in contemporary mathematics without the depth and concentrated specialization required for the Bachelor of Science program. To satisfy the writing in the major and information literacy competencies in the Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics, the Bachelor of Science in Mathematics, the Bachelor of Arts in Applied Mathematical Sciences, and the Bachelor of Science in Applied Mathematical Sciences, all students must pass one of the following courses: MATH 2705W, 2710W, 2720W, 2794W, 3670W, 3710W, or 3796W.
