Optional Practical Training or OPT is a period during which students, who have completed their degrees in the USA, are permitted to work for one year on a student visa by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). OPT allows students to work for up to 3 years and develop real-world skills to survive in the competitive jobs market.
It is temporary employment for a period of 12-months that is directly related to the major area of study of an F-1 student. Eligible students have the option to apply for OPT employment authorization before completing their academic studies and/or after completing their academic studies.
A student can participate in three types of Optional Practical Training (OPT):

Bachelor of Music with concentration in Vocal Performance
It is the primary objective of the Vocal Performance program to seek committed and promising young singers and to develop in them a firm foundation in the vocal arts of performance and pedagogy. Our program utilizes training in art song and opera to foster the development of a lifetime commitment to creativity and communication, nurturing the responsibility in our students of contributing to the society in which they live. Our faculty work cooperatively to develop our young artists into working professionals. Through performances of operas and opera-scenes programs, song festivals, public recitals, master classes, and community-outreach programs, students acquire the needed experience and growth necessary for attaining a career in the arts.
Our working relationships with opera companies, interdisciplinary performance symposiums, and international collaborations with conservatories abroad augment the educational experience of our students and assist them in building a network of professional contacts before embarking on their future careers. Artists and professionals with whom students have had the opportunity to observe, meet, and even work with include: sopranos Renee Fleming and Leontyne Price; mezzo-sopranos Joyce DiDonato and Denyce Graves; tenors Jerry Hadley and Anthony Laciura; conductors Willie Anthony Waters and Doris Kosloff; stage director Gina Lapinski; repetiteur Dennis Giauque; composer Jake Heggie; Joseph McClain, founder and former director of the Austin Lyric Opera; Anthony Tommasini, chief music critic of the New York Times; and Marc A. Sorca, president and CEO of OPERA America.
Productions on campus, as well as televised performances, and other forms of outreach support our related goal of bringing the arts to the greater public by making them accessible to the community. These events provide valuable performing experience to our students while also teaching them the joy of enriching others’ lives through creative expression.

Bachelor of Fine Arts in Puppet Arts
Unlike many fields of study in which students take few courses in their major during their early semesters, BFA Dramatic Arts Students begin intensive training in their chosen field immediately upon entering UConn. In a BFA program, approximately two-thirds of your college courses are in your chosen field of study. Most of the remaining credits you will take constitute the university's General Education Requirements in writing, math, history, humanities, science and social science. You will take from one to three general education courses per semester, depending on your semester standing.
The Puppet Arts are a crossroad of many disciplines. Virtually all of the arts and most of the humanities and sciences feed directly into the form that is referred to as Puppetry. The current and past students of The University of Connecticut's Puppet Arts Program are good examples of this wide and varied field. In our graduate program, we have students with majors with undergraduate degrees in Acting, Architecture, Costuming, Dance, Design, English Literature, Mechanical Engineering, Music, Political Science, Religion/ Philosophy, Sculpture, and Technical Theatre.

Bachelor of Science in Engineering - Mechanical Engineering (STEM)
The Bachelor of Science in Engineering (BSE) curriculum is designed to give sound knowledge of basic principles in mathematics, physics, and chemistry; to provide education in the theory, principles, and practices of engineering; and to present the opportunity to obtain additional instruction and experience in one of the major engineering disciplines. Students gain hands-on experience in the laboratory courses that accompany classroom work, and develop design skills in course work beginning in the first two years. Design experience continues in junior and senior years in both the thermal-fluids and mechanical systems stems of the program, culminating in the two semester Senior Design Project courses.
What is a Mechanical Engineer?
Mechanical engineers use skills in mathematics and science to develop, design, and manufacture tools, engines, machines, and many other mechanical devices that improve our standard of living. Mechanical engineering is one of the most diverse disciplines within the engineering profession; mechanical engineers collaborate with doctors to design better medical equipment, research and build renewable energy technologies, and create robots that replicate human movement. Mechanical engineers design things we use everyday, and lead innovation in state-of-the-art technologies like nanotechnology , an emerging field in which functional systems are engineered at the molecular level.

Bachelor of Arts in Theatre Studies
The Theatre Studies BA is similar to most of UConn's liberal arts degrees in students take approximately 40% of their college credits within their major field. On the introductory, 1000 course level, BA students must take the same core courses required of all Dramatic Arts majors. In addition, BA students elect a further 18 credits of courses in dramatic arts at the 3000-4000 level. The remaining 60% of the BA curriculum consists mainly of liberal arts courses, including the University's broad-ranging General Education Requirements and the election of 12 credits at the 3000-4000 level in a related group of courses outside the department.
Thanks to its special combination of academic studies in theatre and production experience through the Connecticut Repertory Theatre, the BA in Theatre Studies provides an excellent foundation for graduate work in theatre or other academic fields, as well as a foundation for professional careers in directing, playwriting, dramatic criticism, stage management, theatre management, and a host of other related fields within the theatre, film, and television industries.
The following is a list of the dramatic arts courses you will take in order to complete your BA in Theatre Studies. “Related” courses are non-Dramatic Arts courses.

Bachelor of Science in Economics
A student majoring in economics should acquire a thorough grounding in basic principles and methods of analysis, plus a working competence in several of the specialized and applied fields. Examples of such fields are industrial organization, law and economics, money and banking, international trade and finance, public finance, labor economics, health economics, urban and regional economics, and economic development. The major in economics can lead to either a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science degree.
Course work in economics serves a wide variety of vocational objectives. An economics major (supplemented by a rigorous calculus and statistics course sequence) is excellent preparation for graduate work in economics, which qualifies a person for academic, business, or government employment. Majors and others with strong economics training are attractive prospects for business firms and government agencies, and for professional graduate study in business or public policy. An economics background is especially desirable for the study and practice of law. The economics B.S. is recommended for students interested in professions that call for quantitative skills. The B.S. is especially recommended for Honors students and students considering graduate school in economics or other quantitative areas.
