Digital Media and Design majors must maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.7 for all graded coursework at the University of Connecticut. Digital Media and Design majors must maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 based on all courses required within the Digital Media and Design majors.

At the end of each semester, students with a grade point deficiency will be placed on departmental scholastic probation. During the subsequent semester, the student will have the opportunity to improve their standing. In the event that the student’s standing does not rise to the minimum level, they will be subject to dismissal from the Digital Media and Design major.

The requirements for the B.S. or B.A. in Mathematics-Statistics degree are 40 credits at the 2000-level or above in Mathematics and Statistics, with at least 12 credits in each department.

The required courses for the Mathematics-Statistics major are MATH 2110Q (or 2130Q or 2143Q); MATH 2210Q or 3210 or (2143Q and 2144Q); 2410Q or (2420Q or 2144Q); and STAT 3375Q and 3445.

To satisfy the Writing in the Major and Information Literacy competencies, all students must pass one of the following courses: MATH 2705W, 2710W, 2720W, 2794W, 3710W, 3670W, 3796W, or STAT 3494W.

Geoscience emerged from the historic core discipline of geology, which focused on the rocks, fossils, and mineral resources of the solid earth, and of the past.  Within the last half-century, extraordinary technological advances have shifted the spatial scale to the whole of the planet, and the time scale to include the present Anthropocene Epoch and future we must prepare for.

The undergraduate program of study is designed with sufficient breadth and depth to enable our graduates to work successfully in industry or government, or to continue studies in graduate school.

The electrical engineering curriculum provides a firm foundation in fundamentals, while also giving students exposure to current technologies for design and implementation. It strives for a balance between theory, laboratory and design experience. In the first two years of study, students are given a broad foundation in mathematics, physics, chemistry, computer programming, applied mechanics, communication skills and humanities. Introductory courses in computer science and electric circuit analysis are also taken in the sophomore year. In the final two years, students build upon their earlier course work, taking a set of required EE courses intended to provide the core knowledge expected of every electrical engineer.

A student in consultation with his or her advisor chooses a number of electrical engineering professional elective courses, and various elective courses in the humanities and social sciences. The professional elective courses taken give the student expertise in an area of specialization in electrical engineering, or allow him or her to explore topics of individual interest. Areas of specialization in electrical engineering include: biomedical engineering, electronic circuits and instrumentation, microelectronics, systems, and telecommunications. Anthropology studies human beings of all times and places. It examines human biological, cultural and social similarities and differences, and tries to explain them. Because of its broad perspective — which stresses writing, critical thinking, and social analysis — anthropology provides an excellent preparation for a variety of professional and business careers. Anthropology can also be an integral part of the training for life that is the goal of the University’s liberal arts program.

Biomedical engineers apply engineering methods, science and technology to problems in medicine and biology. Biomedical Engineering is a growing field that will continue to have a significant impact on health care. In fact, many feel that biomedical engineering will be the technological area with the most impact on people’s lives in the 21st century. A minor in Biomedical engineering is offered for students at the University of Connecticut who wish to expand their knowledge in the field. Biomedical engineering involves learning about biology in new ways and developing new tools to diagnose and treat disease and to repair or replace diseased organs.

Many students select biomedical engineering to be of service to people and for the excitement of working in a health field. Additionally, biomedical engineering provides excellent preparation for entrance into medical school. Biomedical engineering is interdisciplinary; that is, biomedical engineers often work with other medical health care professionals as members of a team. Exciting advances in medicine, such as the artificial hearts, pacemakers, medical imaging techniques, lasers, prosthetic implants, life support systems, and devices that help the paralyzed walk, have been the result of team efforts by biomedical engineers and other professionals. In addition, bioengineers have developed new processes for manufacturing products for the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, an example being humulin, or human insulin, the first product based on recombinant DNA technology

The major is small and personalized. Courses cover topics such as risk management, health economics, healthcare finance, human resource management, and insurance. Sociology is an analytic discipline concerned with understanding people as creators of, and participants in, society. The field is broadly concerned with the study of modern society and its social organizations, institutions, groups, and social roles. Sociologists study social influences on human behavior, such as sexuality, ethnic identity, and religious belief, and how individuals become members of families and communities. The field is also concerned with social problems, especially all forms of prejudice, discrimination, and inequality, and with poverty, crime, violence, and the threatened environment. Sociologists emphasize sources of social problems in the organization of society, public policies for their alleviation, and today’s questions of social justice. Finally, they study how individuals, both alone and working in groups, can change the society in which they live.

The Arabic and Islamic Studies major requires a minimum of 24 credits of Arabic (ARAB) and Arabic and Islamic Studies (ARIS) courses, plus a minimum of 12 credits of related courses from programs other than Arabic and Islamic Studies. A minimum of 12 major credits must consist of Arabic and Islamic Studies courses taken in residence. Only six may be transfer credits. AP credits may not be used toward the major.

Majoring in Applied and Resource Economics will prepare you to think analytically about solving problems in the production and marketing of products and the management of natural resources and the environment. The program awards a B.S degree in Applied and Resource Economics, has a highly flexible curriculum, and caters to individualized interests while helping you develop highly marketable skills and pursue interests from the major areas of study and concentrations.
