The B.S. degree in Mathematics-Physics may be completed by following either track A, which has a physics emphasis, or track B, which has a mathematics emphasis. Students in track A should choose an advisor from the Physics Department, and those in Track B should choose an advisor from the Mathematics Department. In either track, the writing in the major and information literacy competencies are met using PHYS 2501W.

The Department offers both Bachelor of Science and a Bachelor of Arts degrees in Mathematics, Applied Mathematical Sciences, Mathematics-Statistics, and Mathematics-Actuarial Science, and Mathematics-Actuarial Science-Finance, and a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics-Physics. The Bachelor of Science program provides in-depth training in Mathematics as preparation for graduate study or for participation in scientific and engineering teams in government, industry, or research laboratories. The Bachelor of Arts degree is designed to provide training in contemporary mathematics without the depth and concentrated specialization required for the Bachelor of Science program. It is the primary objective of the Vocal Performance program to seek committed and promising young singers and to develop in them a firm foundation in the vocal arts of performance and pedagogy. Our program utilizes training in art song and opera to foster the development of a lifetime commitment to creativity and communication, nurturing the responsibility in our students of contributing to the society in which they live. Our faculty work cooperatively to develop our young artists into working professionals. Through performances of operas and opera-scenes programs, song festivals, public recitals, master classes, and community-outreach programs, students acquire the needed experience and growth necessary for attaining a career in the arts.

Our working relationships with opera companies, interdisciplinary performance symposiums, and international collaborations with conservatories abroad augment the educational experience of our students and assist them in building a network of professional contacts before embarking on their future careers. Artists and professionals with whom students have had the opportunity to observe, meet, and even work with include: sopranos Renee Fleming and Leontyne Price; mezzo-sopranos Joyce DiDonato and Denyce Graves; tenors Jerry Hadley and Anthony Laciura; conductors Willie Anthony Waters and Doris Kosloff; stage director Gina Lapinski; repetiteur Dennis Giauque; composer Jake Heggie; Joseph McClain, founder and former director of the Austin Lyric Opera; Anthony Tommasini, chief music critic of the New York Times; and Marc A. Sorca, president and CEO of OPERA America.

Productions on campus, as well as televised performances, and other forms of outreach support our related goal of bringing the arts to the greater public by making them accessible to the community. These events provide valuable performing experience to our students while also teaching them the joy of enriching others’ lives through creative expression.

The Bachelor of Arts (BA) program in Art provides you with the best of two worlds: the intimacy of a small and vibrant art school, situated within an intellectually engaging major research university. Here it is possible to follow your passions for studio art in its many forms, art history, design, or visual storytelling (in still and moving images), while also exploring literature, history, sciences, and so much more. Students have access to a wide array of art-making and exhibition spaces, as well as emergent and convergent methods and technologies.

Students majoring in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology may opt for either a Bachelor of Arts degree or Bachelor of Science degree. Both B.A. and B.S. degree candidates must complete the following courses in addition to the general CLAS requirements for these degrees: BIOL 1107 and BIOL 1108 or 1110; and CHEM 1127Q and 1128Q; or CHEM 1124Q, 1125Q, and 1126Q.

The Department of Psychological Sciences recommends that its majors take a broad selection of Psychological Science courses and electives to obtain a well-rounded introduction to the science. The Department encourages students to participate in its research activities, including laboratory courses, research seminars, and independent study experiences.

A maximum of seven 2000-level or above transfer credits in psychology may count toward the major upon approval of the transfer coordinator in the Department of Psychological Sciences. Up to three credits of PSYC 3889 or 3899 can be used, and PSYC 3880 cannot be used.

This B.S. program emphasizes the physical and chemical foundations of molecular biology. A total of 36 credits at the 2000-level or above from the following courses are required for the major.

Undergraduate education in business is designed to impart a broad base of general knowledge within which students pursue additional knowledge to become exceptional managerial and business leaders. The curricula seek to expand capacities, perspectives, and skills of students who wish direct preparation for careers in either business firms or the public service.

In addition to the business programs leading to the Bachelor of Science, a Management and Engineering for Manufacturing bachelor’s degree program is offered jointly with the School of Engineering and is described at the end of the list of business majors in this section of the Catalog.

Geoscience emerged from the historic core discipline of geology, which focused on the rocks, fossils, and mineral resources of the solid earth, and of the past.  Within the last half-century, extraordinary technological advances have shifted the spatial scale to the whole of the planet, and the time scale to include the present Anthropocene Epoch and future we must prepare for.

The Italian major allows students to focus on Italian literary studies, but also allows them to take advanced coursework in Italian language, communication, and cultural studies.
