Optional Practical Training or OPT is a period during which students, who have completed their degrees in the USA, are permitted to work for one year on a student visa by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). OPT allows students to work for up to 3 years and develop real-world skills to survive in the competitive jobs market.

It is temporary employment for a period of 12-months that is directly related to the major area of study of an F-1 student. Eligible students have the option to apply for OPT employment authorization before completing their academic studies and/or after completing their academic studies.

A student can participate in three types of Optional Practical Training (OPT):

  1. Pre-Completion OPT: This is temporary employment provided to F-1 students before completion of their course of study.
  2. Post-Completion OPT: This is temporary employment available to F-1 students after completing their course of study.
  3. 24 Month STEM Extension: Students enrolled in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) courses can a 24-month extension after their initial Post-Completion OPT authorization.

Biomedical engineers apply engineering methods, science and technology to problems in medicine and biology. Biomedical Engineering is a growing field that will continue to have a significant impact on health care. In fact, many feel that biomedical engineering will be the technological area with the most impact on people’s lives in the 21st century. A minor in Biomedical engineering is offered for students at the University of Connecticut who wish to expand their knowledge in the field. Biomedical engineering involves learning about biology in new ways and developing new tools to diagnose and treat disease and to repair or replace diseased organs.

Many students select biomedical engineering to be of service to people and for the excitement of working in a health field. Additionally, biomedical engineering provides excellent preparation for entrance into medical school. Biomedical engineering is interdisciplinary; that is, biomedical engineers often work with other medical health care professionals as members of a team. Exciting advances in medicine, such as the artificial hearts, pacemakers, medical imaging techniques, lasers, prosthetic implants, life support systems, and devices that help the paralyzed walk, have been the result of team efforts by biomedical engineers and other professionals. The Department of Psychological Sciences recommends that its majors take a broad selection of Psychological Science courses and electives to obtain a well-rounded introduction to the science. The Department encourages students to participate in its research activities, including laboratory courses, research seminars, and independent study experiences.

A maximum of seven 2000-level or above transfer credits in psychology may count toward the major upon approval of the transfer coordinator in the Department of Psychological Sciences. Up to three credits of PSYC 3889 or 3899 can be used, and PSYC 3880 cannot be used.

Geographic Information Science (GIScience) is the scientific discipline that conducts spatial analysis to examine economic, environmental, physical, and social phenomena. The study of spatial data structures and computational techniques to capture, represent, process, and analyze geographic information are essential to GIScience. GIScience overlaps with and draws from many research fields such as computer science, statistics, mathematics, and psychology, and contributes to progress in those fields. GIScience also supports research in many academic disciplines such as natural resource management, environmental science and engineering, geosciences, agriculture, marine sciences, sociology, history, public health, business, and anthropology.

Courses in GIScience enable students to develop capability in spatial thinking and gather in-depth knowledge in geospatial technology. Geospatial technology is a term used to describe the range of modern tools contributing to the geographic mapping and analysis of the Earth and human societies, e.g. geographic information systems (GISystems), remote sensing, the global positioning system (GPS), spatial statistics, web mapping and navigation technologies.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, graduates with skills in geospatial technology are in extremely high demand and are one of the highest growth areas in the federal government. Students have employment opportunities in many corporate and government entities. Students with an undergraduate degree in GIScience are also prepared to move on to graduate school to pursue M.A, M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in many fields that enable them to pursue academic jobs or to secure higher ranking positions in the public and private sectors.

A student majoring in economics should acquire a thorough grounding in basic principles and methods of analysis, plus a working competence in several of the specialized and applied fields. Examples of such fields are industrial organization, law and economics, money and banking, international trade and finance, public finance, labor economics, health economics, urban and regional economics, and economic development. The major in economics can lead to either a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science degree.

Course work in economics serves a wide variety of vocational objectives. An economics major (supplemented by a rigorous calculus and statistics course sequence) is excellent preparation for graduate work in economics, which qualifies a person for academic, business, or government employment. Majors and others with strong economics training are attractive prospects for business firms and government agencies, and for professional graduate study in business or public policy. The Exercise Science (BS) major provides a comprehensive understanding of exercise, human performance, and healthy living. This major prepares graduates for further study of exercise science as well as healthcare professions including medicine, physician assistant studies, physical therapy, and athletic training. Students complete coursework in general education, kinesiology, cognate areas (outside, but supportive of, Exercise Science), with an emphasis on basic science courses.

The curriculum is dedicated to preparing students both professionally and academically for their future career. A high degree of excellence is expected in all aspects of career development, including practical and academic success.

Incoming Freshman students are directly admitted to the Exercise Science program. Admission is highly competitive; students with strong math and science preparation will be given preference.

The undergraduate program of study is designed with sufficient breadth and depth to enable our graduates to work successfully in industry or government, or to continue studies in graduate school.

The electrical engineering curriculum provides a firm foundation in fundamentals, while also giving students exposure to current technologies for design and implementation. It strives for a balance between theory, laboratory and design experience. In the first two years of study, students are given a broad foundation in mathematics, physics, chemistry, computer programming, applied mechanics, communication skills and humanities. Introductory courses in computer science and electric circuit analysis are also taken in the sophomore year. In the final two years, students build upon their earlier course work, taking a set of required EE courses intended to provide the core knowledge expected of every electrical engineer.

A student in consultation with his or her advisor chooses a number of electrical engineering professional elective courses, and various elective courses in the humanities and social sciences. The professional elective courses taken give the student expertise in an area of specialization in electrical engineering, or allow him or her to explore topics of individual interest. Areas of specialization in electrical engineering include: biomedical engineering, electronic circuits and instrumentation, microelectronics, systems, and telecommunications.
