Cleveland State University's Mechanical Engineering Department offers a program leading to the Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering. Major areas of specialization within the department are: 1.) Thermal-Fluid Mechanics and Energy Systems, 2.) Dynamics, Vibrations, and Machine Design, 3.) Robotics, Controls, and Mechatronics, 4.) Biomechanics, and 5.) Manufacturing.

Courses are organized in the above five tracks, however students have the flexibility to choose their own courses according to their individual interests and career goals. Numerous and continuous opportunities exist for exposure to engineering problems and developments within the industrial/research complex of Northeastern Ohio. In addition to substantial interdisciplinary research activities in the College of Engineering, faculty and students participate in research programs sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy, the NASA Glenn Research Center, and industrial partners like Parker-Hannifin, General Electric and Philips Medical Systems, to name a few. The program is designed to stimulate creativity, to provide a deep understanding of the basic physical phenomena involved in mechanical systems, and to provide an ability to use modern techniques in the analysis, control, and design of mechanisms machines, mechatronic and robotic systems and fluid/thermal systems.

Sociologists study human behavior in industrialized societies. Sometimes this behavior involves personal relationships, perhaps among teenagers or the elderly, sometimes the difficulties facing the urban poor or drug addicts, sometimes the development of modern nation-states and political conflict. Sociology open new windows--challenging conventional wisdom, dissolving myths about social reality, illuminating how the world is socially constructed and clarifying our options and choices.

Sociology students at Cleveland State University are taught to analyze modern social problems scientifically. In addition, they are taught how to do research about these issues using statistics, interviews and participant observation. Good research requires a grasp of the "sociological imagination"--the connections between historical, large-scale social forces and biography, the ways in which people live and understand their lives.

Majors in sociology develop the critical thinking and writing skills basic to a sound liberal arts education; they learn research skills and an understanding of the sociological perspective. This prepares them for a wide range of careers: some students use the degree as preparation for graduate work in one of the social sciences or law, others work in human resource management, social service, criminal justice, corporations or schools.

A student who has completed French course work in high school or at another institution and who wishes to continue the study of that language must begin course work for credit at the level consistent with her or his academic background. A placement test is required for all students with less than three years of high school French or the equivalent. Students who have had three or more years of previous study must consult with an adviser in the Department of World Languages, Literatures, and Cultures to determine the appropriate level.

The Master of Science in Electrical Engineering program integrates theory and applications. Courses are typically scheduled in the late afternoon and early evening to serve the needs of both full-time and part-time students. The program is suitable for students planning to continue their studies at the doctoral level, as well as those who do not plan formal studies beyond the master's degree. Each student plans a program of study in consultation with an advisor appointed by the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. The program includes required courses and an integrated selection of courses in the student's field of interest. The following areas of specialization are offered for graduate study and research:

Cleveland State University's graduate program in civil engineering is designed to provide students with knowledge of advanced methods for analysis and design or for research and development. Students must select one of the following graduate specializations: Structures/Foundations, Water Resources Engineering, Transportation, or Environmental Engineering. Full-time or part-time study may be pursued.

The interdisciplinary major is administered by the Department of History and is primarily intended for students seeking secondary licensure. It provides comprehensive training in History and related social-studies fields taught in Ohio secondary schools. The primary mission of the Social Studies major is to provide students with the content competency to teach Social Studies in secondary schools. A Social Studies teacher is expected to teach students how to make informed and reasoned decisions as citizens in a culturally diverse, democratic society. The degree forms the content knowledge basis for students to pursue teaching professions and to
provide the necessary critical thinking, analytical reasoning, and academic judgment skills upon which to embark on a lifetime of intellectual growth. Students pursuing a degree in Social Studies must also fulfill a minor in secondary education, which is administered by the College of Education and Human Services.

The Chemical Engineering curriculum prepares the student for a successful career in a dynamic and progressive profession. A chemical engineer may pursue a wide scope of projects. Chemical engineers are responsible for the design and operation of processes that accomplish chemical changes. Examples of such processes are the production of antibiotics, detergents, drugs, paints, plastics, petrochemicals, advanced materials, and synthetics. A chemical engineer may also work on the research and development preceding or accompanying a given process design, or the management of a plant or an entire enterprise. The Cleveland State University chemical engineering curriculum provides a strong foundation to work in energy conservation and utilization, environmental pollution control, as well as the petrochemical industry and many other chemical-related industries. Consistent with mission of the university, college and department, this program has been designed to provide an attractive avenue for students interested in chemical engineering.

Business Economics is a specialized area of economics that uses economic and quantitative analysis to make strategic business, financial, and management decisions. Business economists study the allocation of scarce resources, and the resulting forces that shape our business, economy and society both locally and globally.

The Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) in Business Economics can lead to many career opportunities in the public sector, financial institutions, marketing institutions, investment institutions, consulting firms, market research organizations, mergers and acquisitions departments, insurance companies, and international organizations.

The Bachelor of Arts in Physics degree is designed to prepare students for a broad range of technical/science careers or graduate professional programs (medical physics, patent processing, teaching). It is constructed to give an in-depth and broad look into the world of Physics, while aiming for a very flexible schedule of classes.

The study of physics provides a crucial understanding of the world around us though the study of the fundamental laws governing matter and energy. The field of physics has been instrumental in the development of advanced materials, electronic and optical devices, and medical equipment, impacting every aspect of our way of life. Studying physics fosters critical thinking, quantitative proficiency, and the ability to research and organize information, and infer new ideas.

Studying marketing provides students with the basis to understand the art of developing, communicating, and delivering an offering that consumers find attractive. The goal of marketing is to persuade, earn, and keep customers, clients and partners through carefully articulating the value of your product or service. Studying marketing develops creativity, strategic problem solving, and a deep understanding of consumer behavior and motivation.

Special tracks within the Marketing Major include: consumer marketing, business-to-business marketing, international marketing, database marketing and digital marketing.
