The Biophysics program began in the early 1990's to prepare students for graduate programs at the interface of biology and physics. The program requirements expose students to basic techniques in biology, physics, and mathematics. Students completing this program typically go on to graduate programs in biology, physics, and medical.

school.Biophysics is a broadly and variably defined topic. All definitions are subject to definer bias. Perhaps the best way for us to deal with this field is to say that it's anything that includes overlap between the fields of biology and physics. The scale for these interactions range from the very small (e.g., biochemical dynamics) to the large (e.g., do elephants actually run?). Geneseo’s Department of Geological Sciences (GSCI) is a highly student-centered department that houses the programs for the B.A. in Geological Sciences, the B.A. in Geochemistry, the B.A. in Geophysics, an Earth Science Adolescent Certification Program and the GSCI minor.  Each of these programs provides Geneseo students with a strong foundation in the geosciences.  Our graduates are highly successful in finding positions in teaching, industry, and graduate programs.

Students graduating from Geneseo with one of our degrees are invaluable to New York State since we are educating geoscientists who will be future teachers, professional geologists and environmental scientists.  The B.A. in Geological Sciences is a certified state-licensure qualifying program for Professional Geologists in NYS.  Students who earn this degree are highly competitive in the job market and they are able to pursue professional licensure sooner than students from institutions that are not certified.

The respected and active GSCI faculty and staff are invested in providing all Geneseo students with a broad interdisciplinary approach to studying geology and our environment.  We aim to foster a curiosity of how the Earth works and an appreciation how geology and society are interconnected.

SUNY Geneseo's Department of Art History is housed in Brodie Hall. The hall was designed by architect Edgar Tafel, a noted designer of the second wave of American modernist architects who followed the innovative designs of Frank Lloyd Wright. Brodie Hall houses the Departments of Art History, Theater and Dance, and Music into an integrated Arts area that combines creative expression with scholarship.

The Department of Art History provides students with the opportunity to explore the history of art as undergraduate scholars interested in careers in the Arts. The Department offers linked programs in Art History (Major/Minor), Museum Studies (Minor) and an Education Concentration (School of Education), while encouraging students to develop their knowledge of Business practices (School of Business), through connected coursework.

One of the nation's most successful liberal arts-based geography programs, the Department of Geography at SUNY Geneseo offers a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Geography and administers minor degree programs in Environmental Studies and Urban Studies.

Spanning the discipline's breadth, our curriculum strives to enhance geographic literacy while ensuring that students develop intellectual skills important to the pursuit of an enriching and rewarding life. Students who study philosophy confront theoretical and practical questions about themselves, their social world, and the fundamental nature of reality. Engaging in philosophical thinking is essential to a superior liberal arts education. It enriches thought, understanding, and imagination.

Geneseo is a great place to study philosophy; the department is open and friendly, class sizes are small, and majors are encouraged to combine philosophy with other majors.

The philosophy major meets the needs and interests of students who:

• Plan graduate study & teaching in the field
• Intend to go to law school
• Seek preparation for work in government, business, social service, or any field in which critical thinking is valued, and
• Simply want to think deeply about fundamental life-questions and assumptions.

The Bachelor of Arts Degree in Mathematics has a three fold thrust: to ensure that all students acquire a solid background in the basics of analysis, algebra, and discrete mathematics; to ensure that students have a breadth of knowledge; and to ensure the flexibility of choice that allows students to tailor programs that meet their career goals. Additionally, students see their mathematics integrated into a larger, technologically intensive world.

(Bachelor of Science) Students in the Applied Physics B.S. program go on to graduate schools in engineering and related fields.  Students with the Applied Physics B.S. degree are well-prepared to enter the workforce in a technical area immediately following graduation.

With the option of pursuing a B.A. in geology, geochemistry, or geophysics, students at SUNY Geneseo are exposed to challenging and rewarding curriculum taught by accomplished faculty with a broad range of expertise. Alums of the SUNY Geneseo Department of Geological Sciences have gone on to pursue graduate degrees at Stanford, Scripps, Texas A&M, the University of Wisconsin, the University of Arizona, and other universities, to become recognized leaders in their field. Some recent graduates are employed in corporate communication, the media industries, public relations, sales, marketing and financial services. Others have chosen to further their education in the fields of healthcare communication, counseling, conflict resolution, law and business administration.

The basis for their success is a comprehensive liberal arts communication program that combines conceptual and critical understanding with hands on application of skills. All majors take coursework in public speaking, interpersonal communication and mass communication. They also select a track of study in Personal and Professional Communication, Journalism and Media Studies, or Intercultural and Critical Studies.

The Department of Theatre and Dance is proud to promote creative stimulation in students dedicated to either discipline.  Students will be trained in their respective fields, learning the fundamental skill sets necessary to perform and develop their own creative energies. The Department also hosts a number of student organizations dedicated to the fulfillment of these goals.
