The study of modern languages, literatures and cultures like German is especially important in a global society, as it helps emphasize similarities and improve communication between people and nations. Our Department of Languages and Literatures, among the largest in the SUNY system, offers learning in small classes led by faculty who encourage active use of your chosen language, as well as many study-abroad opportunities.

Practice your language skills at the weekly international coffee hour and in the friendly department's foyer. Attend foreign films, lectures, discussions and field trips, and participate in German-American programs. Take advantage of our robust study-abroad and exchange programs with German universities or a Global Cities course in Berlin.

Your examination of public communication will include the study of public speaking and the principles of persuasion, argumentation and rhetoric. You’ll actively participate in class discussions on topics such as the ways individuals differ in their communication of gender and culture. 

Students apply practical outcomes of their education through a service learning requirement that is part of their degree program. We strongly encourage internships, co-ops, independent studies and other opportunities to apply your campus learning experiences. If you excel, you may be eligible to join the department’s honor society, Lambda Pi Eta.

Student media The Oswegonian, WTOP-TV and WNYO-FM, as well as on-campus National Public Radio affiliate WRVO, provide opportunities to put your communication skills into action through performance, promotion and running social media accounts.

The year long capstone experience places students in a position of developing software for real clients. The laboratory and instructional facilities support and encourage creativity and teamwork. Oswego’s software engineering program — the first in all of SUNY — provides a systems-oriented curriculum that encompasses software requirements, design, construction, testing, maintenance, configuration management, engineering management, engineering process, tools and quality assurance.

Join the Computer Science Association, which sponsors guest speakers, conducts programming contests, arranges tours of companies that hire graduates and provides opportunities for advanced students to tutor and mentor first-year students. Develop software for real clients during your year-long capstone experience. Pursue an internship or co-op opportunity in a company or institution, and gain software development experience in finance, defense, manufacturing, government or other fields.

State-of-the-art facilities in the Shineman Center include workspaces configured for class-based, small-group and individual activities. Our labs provide a great learning, testing and training ground for future success.

SUNY Oswego’s bachelor of science degree program in Software Engineering (SE) is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC) of ABET — the global accreditor of college and university programs in applied and natural science, computing, engineering, and engineering technology.

The teaching of this broad base of knowledge is supported by the years of practical, professional experience our faculty bring to the classroom. Coursework includes strong elements of the accounting, economics and quantitative fields, and will prepare you for positions in financial institutions such as commercial and investment banks, mutual funds, brokerages and insurance companies.

As a student, you'll even receive hands-on experience helping manage funds. SUNY Oswego's Gordon A. Lenz Center for Finance, Insurance and Risk Management provides resources for excellence in teaching, research and community outreach.

Our ECE program prepares you for successful careers in engineering or related professional disciplines, or the successful pursuit of graduate studies with contributions to improving society and the global community.

Join prestigious engineering societies — such as the IEEE (Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers, ACM (Association for Computing Machinery), SWE (Society of Women Engineers) and others — to network with other students and professionals. The graphic design and digital media program consists of courses in studio, thesis, history, theory and practice. Candidates choose to focus in a specific medium such as the web, interactive or print, or to focus on a specific production type such as promotional, informational or illustrative. The curriculum is structured into two tracks, offering students with an undergraduate degree in a related area of study the opportunity to develop a specialization, and offering students from outside of the discipline the opportunity for general study within design to complement an undergraduate degree.

Cinema and screen studies focuses on the history, theory and criticism of cinema, as well as of new and pre-cinematic screen media, with a sequence in screenwriting and digital film production. The program incorporates interdisciplinary options that allow you to link studies of moving images to exciting developments in cognitive science, computer and information sciences, and the other humanities, fine arts and social sciences.

Use the course learning agreement to focus on your own interests — whether that means acting, design, computer animation, the psychological and social effects of moving images, media literacy and education — or the connections among information science, the natural sciences and visual technologies. Create a public exhibition of a film or video project — or a public reading and discussion of a research project or screenplay — to fulfill your capstone course requirement. Oswego's program regularly shows at, and sometimes hosts, the SUNY-wide Film Festival.

Our Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) accredited program prepares students with the listening, problem-solving, diagnosis, treatment planning and case consultation skills needed for a successful future in the field. The program consists of 60 credits, which allows you to create relationships with area leaders for future opportunities, plus see the skills, theories and ethics utilized in the practice.

Our interdisciplinary degree integrates concepts and methods from computer science, graphic design and the social sciences. Drawing upon these concepts and methods, you will learn user-centered design approaches as you create information and communication technologies such as websites, mobile apps, computer games and software design.

Choose between two tracks designed to focus solely on HCI influences or a professional track infused with business courses.

You’ll acquire knowledge that can help you think critically and communicate effectively about social structures and the forces that shape individual, group and collective experience. The program's scope ranges from the analysis of small-group behavior to the study of the development of large social systems — from the family to education, religion, government and the economy.

Join the Sociology Club. Participate in valuable internships, usually at social and county agencies, and take advantage of our extensive overseas study program. Opportunities for exceptional students include working with professors one-on-one in independent study courses, and participating in the SUNY Oswego Sociology Honors Society. An annual Sportsmanship Day Symposium provides an opportunity to present on sports sociology (and other related) topics.
