Overview

Our program investigates our complex culture from perspectives that include history, political institutions, literature and art. You will gain historical perspective, familiarity with the great plays of the world, and an opportunity to participate in all areas of the theatre. 

Our hands-on mainstage theatre season offers you the opportunity to perform, design or crew full productions alongside faculty and industry professionals, as well as the unique and student-created annual Honors Production.

Student societies, including the Blackfriars Student Theatre organization and the Mu Iota cast of national honor society Alpha Psi Omega, offer opportunities to engage with other theatre students. You will have the opportunity to assist faculty directors and designers, as well as to take advantage of the many internships, co-ops and international study opportunities available.

Our highly credentialed professional staff and faculty bring their extensive knowledge and individual mentorship to the classroom and in international enrichment opportunities to Russia, New York City and London. Work Permit USA

Optional Practical Training or OPT is a period during which students, who have completed their degrees in the USA, are permitted to work for one year on a student visa by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). OPT allows students to work for up to 3 years and develop real-world skills to survive in the competitive jobs market.

It is temporary employment for a period of 12-months that is directly related to the major area of study of an F-1 student. Eligible students have the option to apply for OPT employment authorization before completing their academic studies and/or after completing their academic studies.

A student can participate in three types of Optional Practical Training (OPT):

  1. Pre-Completion OPT: This is temporary employment provided to F-1 students before completion of their course of study.
  2. Post-Completion OPT: This is temporary employment available to F-1 students after completing their course of study.
  3. 24 Month STEM Extension: Students enrolled in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) courses can a 24-month extension after their initial Post-Completion OPT authorization.

You'll learn about the creation and production of media, the interrelated nature of media industries and the skills necessary to write, produce and distribute media messages. Explore a variety of areas including audio and video production, broadcast journalism, copywriting and media management. Our updated curriculum includes a variety of offerings in integrated media design and social media.

Many hands-on opportunities in front of or behind the camera, in control rooms and on the radio — including with some of the best campus facilities anywhere — make Oswego's broadcasting program a launchpad for countless successful careers.

In addition to campus radio (WNYO) and TV organizations (WTOP), you can seek an internship or co-op opportunity and gain valuable experience, Oswego students have interned at major networks (ABC, CBS, NBC, MTV, ESPN), regional radio (including on-campus National Public Radio affiliate WRVO) and television stations, state and federal agencies and not-for-profit civic and cultural groups. Our Hollywood POV program takes you to the West Coast media capital to learn about, and connect with alumni working in, major entertainment and news operations. You can also help organize the annual Dr. Lewis B. O'Donnell Media Summit, which brings prominent names in the industry to campus.

Subjects focus on American, African, Asian, European, Latin American and Middle Eastern history; social, intellectual, military and political history; and gender and ethnic studies. You’ll learn to read closely and critically, to evaluate and synthesize materials from diverse sources, to speak and write effectively, to use empathy and imagination and to adhere to high standards of intellectual integrity — skills and habits of mind that will serve you well in diverse fields.

Our setting in a historic city and region provides a complementary atmosphere and many internship opportunities with museums, historic attractions and preservation organizations (as well as in other parts of the country). Apply to study abroad in cities old and new.

Pursue opportunities to work with our skilled and helpful faculty on individual research projects. Join our History Club. Excel and you could be inducted into Phi Alpha Theta, the national history honor society — and become eligible for the history honors program, in which you can work directly with a faculty member to complete a thesis and earn an honors degree.

This major prepares you for the growing importance of analyzing and understanding data and statistics. You can choose the bachelor of arts in mathematics to focus more on theory, or the bachelor of science in applied mathematics to examine practical applications in science and operations research. Small classes provide you with individual attention from professors who actively involve you in the learning process.

With the department’s approval, enter the honors program in mathematics, where you’ll have the opportunity to pursue advanced topics and work with faculty one-on-one. For an even greater challenge, work on an independent study. Add to your resume with internships and co-op opportunities.

In addition to beginning, intermediate and advanced language courses, we offer courses in literature, both in French and in English translation. The literature courses cover major authors and periods as well as specific genre courses, including poetry, theater and film.

A semester- or year-long study program in Paris or Nice enables you to experience French life and culture on a daily basis and enhance fluency in the language. Several students have chosen to study for a semester or summer in Quebec. Students and faculty participate in the French Club and organize film series and other programs that explore the multicultural diversity of Francophonia as well as occasional trips to the province of Quebec. Practice your language skills at the weekly international coffee hour, and in the friendly department’s foyer. The department also sponsors a chapter of Pi Delta Phi, the National French Honor Society. Several students have gone on to prestigious Teaching Assistant Program in France positions.

Bachelor of Science in Zoology

All students engage in research activities through a broad range of research courses, independent study or a senior honors thesis. Outstanding internship opportunities, study-abroad initiatives and Oswego's Rice Creek Field Station make our zoology program a sought-after degree by itself or preparation for veterinary school.

Top-notch research facilities and opportunities in the Shineman Center and Rice Creek Field Station make the campus a living laboratory, while a proven track record and alumni network open a large assortment of internship options. Excel, and you can participate in the department's honors program and summer research opportunities.

Facilities include our Shineman Center's many advanced labs and the Molecular Biology and Biochemistry Center allowing expansive undergraduate opportunities, and our large Rice Creek Field Station with a 7,200-square-foot lab facility.

The program prepares graduates to work with children in schools to provide comprehensive behavioral and mental health services, including diagnostic assessment, academic and behavioral interventions, consultation to promote both individual and school-wide learning, and school-based counseling. 

We have designed our curriculum to align with the National Association of School Psychologists' training standards, and have enjoyed consistent accreditation since the program's inception. With our accreditation, graduates are eligible to apply to become a Nationally Certified School Psychologist. Consistent with these training standards, students will receive training from faculty who have extensive experience working in a wide range of educational settings, from K-12 public schools to private schools to diagnostic clinics. In addition, students will have the opportunity to engage with faculty from our school counseling and mental health counseling programs to strengthen your ability to support the needs of all learners.

The curriculum explores the diverse experiences, perspectives, culture, history and significant contributions of women. This interdisciplinary major is designed to develop a broad understanding of the study of gender and women, investigate women's contributions in all areas of academic scholarship, and explore the relationship between cultural definitions of feminine and masculine behaviors and the realities of women's and men's lives. Choose from core or concentration courses to design programs that fit your specific interests and career orientation.

Environmental Studies & Earth Sciences

Bachelor of Science in Meteorology (STEM)

Meteorologists study the atmosphere and its physical and chemical characteristics and processes, weather patterns and climate. We offer specialized study in different subsections of meteorology, atmospheric and cloud physics, climatology, instruments and air pollution.

Participate in our pioneering Storm Chasers summer program where you'll forecast, pursue and observe extreme weather through the Great Plains states. Join the campus chapter of the American Meteorological Society and attend meetings of the professional AMS with your professors. Get on-air experience as a future TV meteorologist at WTOP, our on-campus television station. Find ample chances to present your own research. Our program and alumni success opens up internship opportunities in such places as the National Weather Service, government agencies, private-sector meteorological firms and television stations.

You’ll have abundant opportunities to engage in hands-on research with faculty through the Lake-Effect Storm Prediction and Research Center. Our observation equipment constantly monitors changes in local weather, with a constant online stream of the latest observational and forecast data. A mesoscale model also provides local forecast data. Interactive graphical interfaces along with specialized graphics provide state-of-the-art visualization for meteorological data. Meteorology lab spaces in the Shineman Center offer hands-on opportunities with advanced tools like our wind tunnel and weather balloon system.

This interdisciplinary program provides language skills, cultural information and an understanding of the fundamental business and economic concepts essential for those in management and marketing positions in firms that operate in the global economy. Most recent data suggest that the job market for these occupations is likely to remain favorable.

Core courses build your foundation in language and culture, as well as basic economic and business concepts, while electives offer you the opportunity to develop a greater depth of knowledge. A dual-language option, for those already proficient in a foreign language, further enhances employment prospects.
