Biochemists explore the molecular nature of cells, study the development of illnesses, search for new drugs, predict undeveloped/inherited health problems and help forensic experts identify criminals. SUNY Oswego’s Molecular Biology and Biochemistry Research Center — the research and teaching facility where you’ll take a number of your lab classes — conducts important work in cancer and anti-diabetic drug discovery, the effects of lead on the cardiovascular system, ecological and genetic studies and more. Updated and powerful labs in the Shineman Center will aid all your research pursuits.

Work with faculty on applied projects. Cinema and screen studies focuses on the history, theory and criticism of cinema, as well as of new and pre-cinematic screen media, with a sequence in screenwriting and digital film production. The program incorporates interdisciplinary options that allow you to link studies of moving images to exciting developments in cognitive science, computer and information sciences, and the other humanities, fine arts and social sciences.

Use the course learning agreement to focus on your own interests — whether that means acting, design, computer animation, the psychological and social effects of moving images, media literacy and education — or the connections among information science, the natural sciences and visual technologies. Create a public exhibition of a film or video project — or a public reading and discussion of a research project or screenplay — to fulfill your capstone course requirement. Oswego's program regularly shows at, and sometimes hosts, the SUNY-wide Film Festival.

This major prepares you for the growing importance of analyzing and understanding data and statistics. In our English program in literary studies, you'll cultivate valuable skills in writing and critical thinking while exploring literary works by diverse writers. Courses stress the importance of critical reading, writing and research to provide you with a background suitable for many kinds of careers. Our diverse faculty teach and publish across the historical and theoretical spectrum, and students benefit from an interdisciplinary mix (for example, a course on crime fiction co-taught by faculty in English and sociology).

The school counseling program builds upon a core of psychological and educational foundations and specialization areas including counseling theory, group process, appraisal, and vocational development and decision-making.

At SUNY Oswego you will participate in supervised practice in individual and group counseling, field work consultation experiences and comprehensive professional services in school, college and social agency settings.

Elective courses, practice and field experiences can focus on a desired institutional placement such as elementary, middle, junior high and/or senior high school, college settings and agencies. Following admission, you will discuss the total program with your designated faculty advisor.

Multidisciplinary courses in such topics as anthropology, sociology, the family, or communication and counseling, provide additional background from other social sciences. Through a personalized learning agreement, you can add three additional courses from different disciplines relevant to your personal educational and career goals.

Select two semester-long internships relevant to your career goals, and apply the academic material you’ve learned to working with people in a human-services role. Take courses to focus on the application of the scientific method in program settings to better and more efficiently serve people using skills in program development and evaluation.
