The mission of the Master of Social Work (MSW) Program at Long Island University is to educate and train professional social work practitioners who are well grounded in the profession’s history, purpose, and philosophy and who can competently and effectively work with diverse populations of clients and client systems in the richness of the New York City and beyond. Integral to competent practice is the ability to engage in interdisciplinary collaboration. Graduates of our MSW program are prepared to engage in practice that is informed by a diverse body of theories and knowledge, social work values, and professional social work skills.

The LIU MSW Program is accredited by the Council of Social Work Education (CSWE), signifying that it meets the highest standards of academic excellence. The Master of Social Work (MSW) Program at LIU Brooklyn is a collaboration with the LIU Post campus in Brookville, New York.

Our MSW program provides a step-wise progression to support student understanding of generalist and specialized social work practice. The generalist practice curriculum includes content in the foundation areas of social work: policy, practice, human behavior, research, diversity, professional values, and promotion of social justice, and applied through a field education experience.

The advanced year curriculum deepens the student’s understanding and demonstrated mastery of psychosocial assessment, administrative theory and practice, and diversity sensitive practice. Students select a specific area of concentration for specialized education in a particular area of practice. Field experience in the second year provides an opportunity for the student to apply in practice specialized knowledge, values and skills gained through their selected concentration.

This B.F.A. program is designed for students interested in rigorous conservatory studio training in acting on stage in theatre, and on-camera in film and television. The comprehensive sequence of study has a practical, professional application, preparing students for the modern acting industry. Classes in stage acting, voice & speech and movement are offered in partnership with The New Group, a renowned theatre company in New York City. B.S. in Entrepreneurship teaches students how to prepare and execute a comprehensive strategy for launching a new venture. The venture can be in any organizational context – large or small, new or existing, non-profit or for profit. The entrepreneurial process of value creation through innovation remains the same regardless of the context or the ultimate goal. Although people often assume that the focus of entrepreneurship is on starting for-profit businesses, learning the entrepreneurial process will help you to think more strategically in all of your endeavors.

The best way to understand the entrepreneurial process is to take a hands-on, experiential approach. In this major, students will interact extensively with the business community both inside and outside the classroom and produce a plan that is both defensible to potential investors and actionable in the real world.

With pressure to contain the cost and time it takes to create new products and bring them to market, professionals with expertise in regulatory affairs are highly sought after by pharmaceutical companies and medical device manufacturers, as well as by hospitals, health maintenance organizations (HMOs) and a range of other health care oriented organizations as well. The expertise of a DRA professional may be used in areas such as clinical trials, manufacturing, compliance, patenting, sales and marketing, IT, finance and scientific writing.

The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Music Technology, Entrepreneurship and Production puts students inside the recording studio and prepares them for a behind-the-scenes careers in the music industry. Students will develop exceptional competency in all aspects of the music making process.

New York City is the birthplace of some of the world’s most iconic artists as well as companies pioneering the $20 billion global music industry. Program graduates will have the tools to build successful careers in creative entrepreneurship, venue management, distribution, performance, songwriting, engineering and production.

The B.S. in Biology is designed to prepare students for graduate or professional studies as well as for entering the job market. Students can elect to specialize in molecular biology. Students who elect to specialize in this concentration must complete all of the requirements for the B.S. in Biology. The 36 to 63-credit Master’s of Business Administration (number of credits is based on your undergraduate coursework) provides the knowledge base and skills that enable professionals to become leaders in business by offering a comprehensive program which meets the needs of an ever-changing, global business environment. The program is offered on a part-time basis during the evenings and weekends with 15- and 7-week semesters, to accommodate the schedules of busy working professionals who are interested in advancing their careers. When you enroll in the program, you will join students representing every continent and possessing a variety of professional backgrounds, including those who work in corporate entities, nonprofit organizations and government agencies.

B.S. in Marketing prepares students for professional careers in a wide variety of marketing functions within business and not-for-profit organizations. Marketing involves the study of new product development, marketing research, analysis of distribution systems, determination of pricing policies, promotion of products and ideas, business relationships, and predictions of consumer behavior.

As a marketing major, you will develop the creative, analytical and communication skills necessary to succeed in the field. You also will develop competencies in product and service promotion, distribution, buyer behavior and market research. Marketing courses focus on integrating theory and practical applications through the use of cases, computer simulations, and through hands-on field projects.

Recent graduates are pursuing marketing careers at companies such as Sony Music, Grey Advertising and Saatchi & Saatchi.

Master of Public Administration in Health Administration prepares students for careers in fields that offer numerous professional paths. Students from diverse backgrounds with varying levels of expertise, are taught by faculty members who are current in all of the latest trends and issues in health care administration.

The program of study is flexible and can be tailored to accommodate the professional requirements of the student by offering specialization courses that provide them with the opportunity to examine a specific management function or an area of application in greater depth. Areas of specialization include health care administration, health care management, health care policy and aging/long-term care. Other specializations can be developed in consultation with a faculty advisor from the broad spectrum of courses available through the Program and the School, as well as through courses available across the Campus.

The Program is divided into four parts: an introductory sequence that provides 15 credits of public service sector foundations and skills, followed by 9 credits of focused management topics including human resources, budgeting and financial management, and law and accountability. Students then take 12 credits in an area of specialization and a required six-credit integrative capstone experience, which culminates in a project and a formal presentation.

Physician assistants (PAs) provide medical care to patients under the supervision of physicians and surgeons. In practice, PAs perform a large percentage of the same care patients receive when they visit a doctor, including taking histories, performing physical exams, ordering labs and diagnostic studies, making initial diagnoses and formulating treatment plans, prescribing medication, performing procedures, and assisting in surgery. PAs may specialize in any area of medicine or surgery and enjoy lateral mobility, meaning that they may move from specialty to specialty without additional formal training.

LIU Brooklyn's Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies program was the first in the region to be approved by the New York State Education Department. Successful completion of the program enables the candidate to register as a physician assistant and to sit for the National Certifying Examination administered by the National Commission on the Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
