The mission of the Master of Social Work (MSW) Program at Long Island University is to educate and train professional social work practitioners who are well grounded in the profession’s history, purpose, and philosophy and who can competently and effectively work with diverse populations of clients and client systems in the richness of the New York City and beyond. Integral to competent practice is the ability to engage in interdisciplinary collaboration. Graduates of our MSW program are prepared to engage in practice that is informed by a diverse body of theories and knowledge, social work values, and professional social work skills.

The LIU MSW Program is accredited by the Council of Social Work Education (CSWE), signifying that it meets the highest standards of academic excellence. The Master of Social Work (MSW) Program at LIU Brooklyn is a collaboration with the LIU Post campus in Brookville, New York.

Our MSW program provides a step-wise progression to support student understanding of generalist and specialized social work practice. The generalist practice curriculum includes content in the foundation areas of social work: policy, practice, human behavior, research, diversity, professional values, and promotion of social justice, and applied through a field education experience.

The advanced year curriculum deepens the student’s understanding and demonstrated mastery of psychosocial assessment, administrative theory and practice, and diversity sensitive practice. Students select a specific area of concentration for specialized education in a particular area of practice. Field experience in the second year provides an opportunity for the student to apply in practice specialized knowledge, values and skills gained through their selected concentration.

The only program of its kind in New York City, LIU Pharmacy’s M.S. in Pharmaceutics with Specialization in Cosmetic Science prepares students for careers in the consumer products industry, researching, developing, and testing new cosmetics, perfumes, toiletries, household products, and more.

Graduates of the program are highly sought after by the global cosmetics industry to support research, development and manufacturing operations in the areas of chemistry, cosmetic/dermatological formulations technology, product evaluations and safety.

The Master of Science program in Pharmacology and Toxicology prepares students with the knowledge and abilities required for competitive technical positions in pharmacological research and testing, for participating in clinical trials, and for performing toxicological reviews and assessments in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries as well as in academic and governmental research laboratories.

Additionally, graduates are well positioned to continue their studies in Ph.D. programs in pharmacology and other biomedical sciences, while other graduates may find the program ideal for improving their credentials toward gaining admission to medical school or other health professional programs.

Career opportunities and employment may include academic departments involved in research, development, and teaching. Rewarding careers are also possible in pharmaceutical companies, government laboratories and agencies including the Centers for Disease Control, The Food and Drug Administration, the Department of Agriculture, the Department of Defense and NASA. Opportunities also exist in areas involving the development of public policy, investment advising, patent law, and scientific writing and editing.

There is excellent potential for rapid advancement in this field due to the importance of the discipline to the drug industry, regulatory agencies, and to the general public.

Graduates of the program have either joined academic departments by securing doctoral fellowships in prestigious laboratories, or obtained jobs in industry. Others have used their degree to facilitate entry into medical and pharmacy schools.

This B.F.A. program is designed for students interested in rigorous conservatory studio training in acting on stage in theatre, and on-camera in film and television. The 36 to 63-credit Master’s of Business Administration (number of credits is based on your undergraduate coursework) provides the knowledge base and skills that enable professionals to become leaders in business by offering a comprehensive program which meets the needs of an ever-changing, global business environment. The program is offered on a part-time basis during the evenings and weekends with 15- and 7-week semesters, to accommodate the schedules of busy working professionals who are interested in advancing their careers. When you enroll in the program, you will join students representing every continent and possessing a variety of professional backgrounds, including those who work in corporate entities, nonprofit organizations and government agencies.

You will gain an understanding of the fundamental principles of business through the required courses. In addition, you will develop expertise and mindset in a specific field by focusing in an area of concentration. This will provide you with a powerful combination of in-depth knowledge and skill set development that is designed to increase your marketability and to serve you throughout your career.

The program is registered by the New York State Department of Education. Graduates of the program receive a Master of Science Degree in Speech-Language Pathology that satisfies the academic and professional requirements specified by ASHA for the CCC-SLP, and are eligible to apply for licensure in SLP by the New York State Department of Education's Office of the Professions. Students who wish to satisfy the New York State Education Office of Teaching requirements for Teacher of Students with Speech and Language Disabilities (TSSLD) may also prepare for this certification as part of their graduate program. Students demonstrating proficiency (i.e., speaking, listening, reading, and writing) in a language other than English may further prepare for a certificate in Teacher of Students with Speech and Language Disabilities with a Bilingual Extension. This program will prepare students to work with individuals who are bilingual or speak a language other than English. The Master's of Science in Exercise Science offers a comprehensive educational experience including lectures and laboratories on theory and application of advanced exercise physiology concepts. Specific tracks of study serve to advantageously position graduates and career professionals in an ever-changing health care environment. The program is designed to enhance students' marketability, through combining exercise physiology with three well-established and popular areas of study: sports nutrition, athletic performance and fitness for people with disabilities.

Although there are three distinct areas of study, the program also offers academic flexibility with several elective courses. In addition, an active research laboratory allows students the opportunity to pursue their own data collection or get involved as a volunteer or graduate assistant.

The M.S. curriculum has an overall credit requirement of 36 credits. Our intention is to provide students with an education that is inspiring, satisfying and valuable to ensure our students are competitive across the current academic and career landscapes.

Students may choose from one of the following tracks:

Exercise Physiology and Sports Nutrition – Prepares students for advanced study in exercise physiology and for careers in corporate fitness, hospitals, rehabilitation, athletics, research and wellness programs. The track emphasizes the role of exercise in health and disease prevention, fitness testing and programming, physical activity intervention as well as hands-on, laboratory-based, clinically-based and research-based internship experiences.

Strength, Conditioning, and Sports Nutrition – Designed for individuals seeking to improve their knowledge and skills in the area of strength and conditioning of athletes. The program focuses on the science and practical application of current knowledge in the field. Students have the opportunity to earn national certification through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA).

Fitness for People with Disabilities – Offers students a unique opportunity to combine advance courses in exercise science, exercise prescription, and applied behavior analysis to design fitness and sports programs for individuals with cognitive, emotional, and physical disabilities. Students develop specialized competencies in exercise testing, program design, and evaluation. This innovate approach leads to a variety of career options in the health-fitness, education and clinical fields.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (2018) projects a high demand for social workers due to job growth in fields, such as mental health and substance abuse, and settings, such as hospitals. The program prepares entry-level social work practitioners to meet the growing, unique and varied social service needs of the diverse communities of Brooklyn, New York City, and beyond. Graduates of the program have strong clinical, advocacy and administrative skills that they use in community-based, governmental, and for-profit organizations across the region.

The program partners with local community-based organizations to provide well-trained generalist practice social workers, prepared to work with individuals, families, groups, organizations and communities through a variety of methods.

In addition to preparing students for careers in social work, the program also prepares students who seek to pursue a graduate degree in social work and in other related fields. Students who successfully complete the program may be eligible for advanced standing in a graduate program in Social Work. With Advanced Standing, students only need to complete one-year of graduate study to earn their master degree.

The Roc Nation’s School of Music, Sports & Entertainment’s innovative B.A. in Sports Communication & Marketing is the first of it’s kind in the New York metro area. The program prepares students for careers in a dynamic and growing spectrum of sports media. As the $500 billion sports industry continues to grow, there will be increased demand for professionals with business and communications training.

Drawing on years of industry experience, LIU’s faculty experts will create a dynamic course of study through experiential learning and access to world-renowned sports industry professionals.

Students will gain practical experience in sports writing and reporting; promotion of sports teams, events and products; performing as a play-by-play announcer or program host; and production of sports content for traditional, online and social media.
