The profession of social work is growing. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (2018) projects a high demand for social workers due to job growth in fields, such as mental health and substance abuse, and settings, such as hospitals. It’s never been a better time to join this dynamic and diverse profession.

The program prepares entry-level social work practitioners to meet the growing, unique and varied social service needs of the diverse communities of Brooklyn, New York City, and beyond. Graduates of the program have strong clinical, advocacy and administrative skills that they use in community-based, governmental, and for-profit organizations across the region.

The program partners with local community-based organizations to provide well-trained generalist practice social workers, prepared to work with individuals, families, groups, organizations and communities through a variety of methods.

In addition to preparing students for careers in social work, the program also prepares students who seek to pursue a graduate degree in social work and in other related fields. Students who successfully complete the program may be eligible for advanced standing in a graduate program in Social Work. With Advanced Standing, students only need to complete one-year of graduate study to earn their master degree.

M.F.A. in Creative Writing prepares students to both be professional writers in the world and to be visionary literary citizens. Situated in the heart of Brooklyn, LIU’s MFA in Creative Writing is an innovative creative writing program centered on world literature, multi-genre education, and publishing. Our applied MFA prepares students for careers in creative writing, academia, translation, and publishing. During their two-year residential program, students have the opportunity to study poetry, fiction, nonfiction, playwriting, and translation, and thus receive a robust multi-genre education.

In our MFA’s publishing courses, students study directly with professionals at the heart of the publishing industry. During the course of their study, students learn about commercial, independent, and academic publishing with frequent guest literary agents, editors, and leaders from seminal national and international literary arts organizations. We also focus on the performative aspects of the writing industry including audiobooks, public performances and speaking, and adaptations. Students learn about the intersection between book publishing and popular and new media. Students also gain vital publishing industry experience through literary internships centered in New York City and through the practicum of editing LIU’s flagship literary journals.

The program is registered by the New York State Department of Education. Graduates of the program receive a Master of Science Degree in Speech-Language Pathology that satisfies the academic and professional requirements specified by ASHA for the CCC-SLP, and are eligible to apply for licensure in SLP by the New York State Department of Education's Office of the Professions. Students who wish to satisfy the New York State Education Office of Teaching requirements for Teacher of Students with Speech and Language Disabilities (TSSLD) may also prepare for this certification as part of their graduate program. Students demonstrating proficiency (i.e., speaking, listening, reading, and writing) in a language other than English may further prepare for a certificate in Teacher of Students with Speech and Language Disabilities with a Bilingual Extension. This program will prepare students to work with individuals who are bilingual or speak a language other than English. B.S. in Marketing prepares students for professional careers in a wide variety of marketing functions within business and not-for-profit organizations. Marketing involves the study of new product development, marketing research, analysis of distribution systems, determination of pricing policies, promotion of products and ideas, business relationships, and predictions of consumer behavior.

As a marketing major, you will develop the creative, analytical and communication skills necessary to succeed in the field. You also will develop competencies in product and service promotion, distribution, buyer behavior and market research. Marketing courses focus on integrating theory and practical applications through the use of cases, computer simulations, and through hands-on field projects.

Recent graduates are pursuing marketing careers at companies such as Sony Music, Grey Advertising and Saatchi & Saatchi.

B.S. in Accounting prepares students for acceptance into various master’s programs and for employment in either the public, private, government or not-for-profit sectors in addition to entry-level positions in business, financial and accounting firms. Students learn essential skills in financial and managerial accounting, taxation and auditing. The curriculum provides a systems approach to prepare students to be technically competent, alert to ethical issues and able to adapt to changes in technology, regulation and globalization.

Student clubs for accounting majors include the Accounting Society, which regularly sponsors professional events and host lectures by guest speakers in the accounting profession. The National Association of Black Accountants offers students the opportunity to participate in mentorship and apprenticeship programs, providing them with the hands-on experience that is so critical to future employers.

TV Writers Studio (TVWS) is a one-of-a-kind writing practicum. Pure and simple, the goal of the TVWS is to educate and to develop highly skilled, experienced professionals with strong portfolios who will be prepared to begin careers in the television industry as writer/producer/entrepreneurs.

Each year, the TVWS has two cohorts running side-by-side: one in its first year, the other in its second and final year. The students invited to participate in the TVWS become part of an intensive, two year curriculum of study during which they function collaboratively like the staff of an ongoing television series; and independently, as writer/creators of their own TV series pilot and web series.

Upon completing the 48 credit program, each student will graduate with an M.F.A in Writing and Producing for Television which.
