The mission of the Master of Social Work (MSW) Program at Long Island University is to educate and train professional social work practitioners who are well grounded in the profession’s history, purpose, and philosophy and who can competently and effectively work with diverse populations of clients and client systems in the richness of the New York City and beyond. Integral to competent practice is the ability to engage in interdisciplinary collaboration. Graduates of our MSW program are prepared to engage in practice that is informed by a diverse body of theories and knowledge, social work values, and professional social work skills.

The LIU MSW Program is accredited by the Council of Social Work Education (CSWE), signifying that it meets the highest standards of academic excellence. The Master of Social Work (MSW) Program at LIU Brooklyn is a collaboration with the LIU Post campus in Brookville, New York.

Our MSW program provides a step-wise progression to support student understanding of generalist and specialized social work practice. The generalist practice curriculum includes content in the foundation areas of social work: policy, practice, human behavior, research, diversity, professional values, and promotion of social justice, and applied through a field education experience.

The advanced year curriculum deepens the student’s understanding and demonstrated mastery of psychosocial assessment, administrative theory and practice, and diversity sensitive practice. Students select a specific area of concentration for specialized education in a particular area of practice. Field experience in the second year provides an opportunity for the student to apply in practice specialized knowledge, values and skills gained through their selected concentration.

The B.A. in Journalism provides skills and experience for media careers in print, broadcast and online journalism. The curriculum keeps pace with the fast-changing communications landscape in the digital age. The Journalism major also prepares students for the fields of public relations, corporate communications and the law. Students apply their skills at the campus newspaper, radio and television stations as well as at professional internships.

LIU Brooklyn’s Journalism department offers a unique program in Sports Journalism, PR & Marketing. The sports industry is a multi-billion-dollar global industry with a job market that continues to expand. The concentration prepares students for positions in sports reporting, sports information, fantasy sports, public relations and marketing for professional sports franchises. The program is offered on a part-time basis during the evenings and weekends with 15- and 7-week semesters, to accommodate the schedules of busy working professionals who are interested in advancing their careers. The program is registered by the New York State Department of Education. Graduates of the program receive a Master of Science Degree in Speech-Language Pathology that satisfies the academic and professional requirements specified by ASHA for the CCC-SLP, and are eligible to apply for licensure in SLP by the New York State Department of Education's Office of the Professions. Students who wish to satisfy the New York State Education Office of Teaching requirements for Teacher of Students with Speech and Language Disabilities (TSSLD) may also prepare for this certification as part of their graduate program. Students demonstrating proficiency (i.e., speaking, listening, reading, and writing) in a language other than English may further prepare for a certificate in Teacher of Students with Speech and Language Disabilities with a Bilingual Extension. Physician assistants (PAs) provide medical care to patients under the supervision of physicians and surgeons. In practice, PAs perform a large percentage of the same care patients receive when they visit a doctor, including taking histories, performing physical exams, ordering labs and diagnostic studies, making initial diagnoses and formulating treatment plans, prescribing medication, performing procedures, and assisting in surgery. PAs may specialize in any area of medicine or surgery and enjoy lateral mobility, meaning that they may move from specialty to specialty without additional formal training.

LIU Brooklyn's Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies program was the first in the region to be approved by the New York State Education Department. Successful completion of the program enables the candidate to register as a physician assistant and to sit for the National Certifying Examination administered by the National Commission on the Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
