The department offers a comprehensive Bachelor of Arts degree that may either follow a specialized area of concentration or an integrated track, depending on the academic, creative and professional goals of the individual student. An area of concentration is a grouping of 24 or more credits in one of the following fields: Computer Graphics, Digital Design, Animation and Interactive Media; Digital Audio Production and Sound Design; Film, Television and Digital Video Production; Media Management; Photography/Digital Photography.

But political decisions aren’t just about who we vote for; the choices we make as individuals – about our schools and our environment, about the movies we watch and the music we listen to – are inherently political.

The Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and the Bachelor of Arts in International Relations degree programs offered by the Department of Political Science are the ideal opportunity for students looking to become more informed about the political reality of the world around them and enter the job market with the outstanding qualifications necessary to a career path in top tier corporate and public sector institutions.

Students majoring in political science must complete a 30-credit course of study. The subfields of political science include American politics, political philosophy, comparative politics, international relations, and a host of related fields such as policy studies, political geography, political economy, popular culture and the media, and studies of particular countries or regions. There is also considerable room for student choice within the major, as the department offers ample opportunities for independent study, honors theses, and internships. Students may also earn a 15-credit minor in Political Science.

Students majoring in international relations must complete the 36-credit course of study in courses that address a broad spectrum of cutting edge issues in contemporary global diplomacy and security, including international law and human rights, international political economy, geopolitics, regimes and institutions, the environment and technology, non-state actors, and regional studies that focus on the Middle East, Asia, and Africa. Credits for internships in international relations, including internships abroad, with the United Nations, and in Washington, D.C., may be counted toward the major upon prior approval by the International Relations Program.

M.F.A. in Creative Writing prepares students to both be professional writers in the world and to be visionary literary citizens. Situated in the heart of Brooklyn, LIU’s MFA in Creative Writing is an innovative creative writing program centered on world literature, multi-genre education, and publishing. Our applied MFA prepares students for careers in creative writing, academia, translation, and publishing. During their two-year residential program, students have the opportunity to study poetry, fiction, nonfiction, playwriting, and translation, and thus receive a robust multi-genre education.

In our MFA’s publishing courses, students study directly with professionals at the heart of the publishing industry. During the course of their study, students learn about commercial, independent, and academic publishing with frequent guest literary agents, editors, and leaders from seminal national and international literary arts organizations. We also focus on the performative aspects of the writing industry including audiobooks, public performances and speaking, and adaptations. Students learn about the intersection between book publishing and popular and new media. Students also gain vital publishing industry experience through literary internships centered in New York City and through the practicum of editing LIU’s flagship literary journals.

For those just beginning in their careers or those seeking a career change, the nursing profession offers a broad range of roles and options in meeting the health needs of individuals, families, communities and populations. 

 The School of Nursing offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing preparing new nurses through two tracks:

• Full-time day track
• Accelerated 2nd-degree track—a 16-month program for students who already hold a baccalaureate degree in another field. This track offers admission in the Summer, Spring, and Fall. 
• Integrate knowledge from the liberal arts and sciences when providing professional nursing care to diverse individuals, families, groups, communities, and populations throughout the life span and across the continuum of healthcare settings.
• Identify principles of leadership and management for quality improvement and patient safety to the delivery of high quality professional nursing care within current cultural, economic, organizational, and political perspectives.
• Integrate evidence-based best practices into professional nursing practice to improve patient outcomes.

• Provide population-based professional nursing care that integrates concepts of demographics, social determinants of health, health promotion, disease and injury prevention, risk assessment, genetics/genomics, equity, and resource utilization in the delivery of quality and safe care.
• Demonstrate professionalism and accountability in nursing practice applying professional values of altruism, autonomy, human dignity, integrity, and social justice.

The B.S. in Exercise Science & Wellness specifically focuses on areas such as human performance, exercise physiology, strength & conditioning, nutrition, biomechanics, sports management and inclusive fitness programing. The curriculum was designed to provide a strong foundation in scientific, physiological, and psychological concepts related to sports performance, wellness, fitness evaluation and exercise adherence, exercise prescription, inclusive fitness and health promotion. Our program positions students for careers in Commercial Fitness, with Professional Sports Teams, at Community Centers, in Non-Profit Organizations, in addition to Wellness Companies, Hotels & Cruise Ships, and the Entertainment Industry. The mission of the Master of Social Work (MSW) Program at Long Island University is to educate and train professional social work practitioners who are well grounded in the profession’s history, purpose, and philosophy and who can competently and effectively work with diverse populations of clients and client systems in the richness of the New York City and beyond. Our MSW program provides a step-wise progression to support student understanding of generalist and specialized social work practice. The generalist practice curriculum includes content in the foundation areas of social work: policy, practice, human behavior, research, diversity, professional values, and promotion of social justice, and applied through a field education experience.

The advanced year curriculum deepens the student’s understanding and demonstrated mastery of psychosocial assessment, administrative theory and practice, and diversity sensitive practice. This B.F.A. program is designed for students interested in rigorous conservatory studio training in acting on stage in theatre, and on-camera in film and television. The comprehensive sequence of study has a practical, professional application, preparing students for the modern acting industry. Classes in stage acting, voice & speech and movement are offered in partnership with The New Group, a renowned theatre company in New York City.
