Overview

The Master of Arts in Rhetoric and Writing (MARW) Program is a two-year (36 credit hour) face-to-face program that can be completed sooner if you choose to enroll in summer classes. Our program offers students the flexibility to take classes full or part-time and applications to our program are accepted year-round. So, you can enroll and begin taking classes in the fall, spring, or summer.

The courses that you will take to complete 36 hours include eight core classes, two elective classes, and two thesis capstone classes that culminate in the successful defense of either a traditional print or a webtext thesis project.

The program is more affordable than most state-schools at $535 per credit hour. The total cost of tuition for MARW program is $19,260. Graduate assistantship funding is available for teaching, research, and administrative duties and all MARW students who applied for positions received them.

All MARW students applying before May 1 each year are eligible for assistantship funding to teach College Writing I or II, Introduction to Technical Writing, Introduction to Speech, or Introduction to Digital Media. MARW students can also apply to tutor students in the Graduate Writing Center.

All of our MARW teaching and tutoring assistants are fully trained at a summer teaching orientation as well as weekly meetings with faculty mentors.

Work Permit USA

Optional Practical Training or OPT is a period during which students, who have completed their degrees in the USA, are permitted to work for one year on a student visa by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). OPT allows students to work for up to 3 years and develop real-world skills to survive in the competitive jobs market.

It is temporary employment for a period of 12-months that is directly related to the major area of study of an F-1 student. Eligible students have the option to apply for OPT employment authorization before completing their academic studies and/or after completing their academic studies.

A student can participate in three types of Optional Practical Training (OPT):

  1. Pre-Completion OPT: This is temporary employment provided to F-1 students before completion of their course of study.
  2. Post-Completion OPT: This is temporary employment available to F-1 students after completing their course of study.
  3. 24 Month STEM Extension: Students enrolled in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) courses can a 24-month extension after their initial Post-Completion OPT authorization.

Sport Business Strategy at the University of Findlay is a highly dynamic program focused on hands-on learning.

The sport and event industry continues to grow in all aspects. Sports and entertainment are merging to create employment opportunities that require business fundamentals along with specialized knowledge. Entertainment, sporting, and event management are among the second-largest group of employers in the U.S. and the largest in the world. This area employs two out of every 10 people and accounts for more than seven percent of the world’s gross national product. Closely allied with the hospitality industries, sport business strategy has become a growing area of interest for many businesses worldwide.

This option consists of four years at the University of Findlay and is completed with the awarding of a bachelor's degree. It's a program developed in consultation with representatives from veterinary schools who stress the need for both strong academic preparation and practical animal contact for veterinary candidates. Two special seminars provide orientation to the various fields of veterinary medicine and facilitate application to veterinary schools.   

Our students reap the benefits of outstanding facilities and strong relationships with area professionals. Learning opportunities include:  

  • Working on-site with four practicing veterinarians  
  • Observing at area veterinary clinics  
  • Small animal and large animal medicine  
  • Veterinary school acceptance rate nearly twice the national average  

Observing at Findlay’s equine hospital (board-certified equine surgeon on staff). The University Equine Veterinary Services, Inc. (located at our English riding facility)offers emergency and routine medical and surgical services for Findlay's animal herds and animals belonging to the general public.

The English program provides a comprehensive interdisciplinary curriculum designed to prepare students for successful careers in many diverse areas of education, public relations, communications, law, and marketing.  As an English major, you will develop skills to become a critical reader, writer, and thinker through the study of diverse literary genres, writing strategies, and research skills.

Literature
The literature emphasis teaches students to become scholars who can think critically and analyze written, oral, and visual texts in a variety of genres. The focus helps to develop an understanding of the relationship between writer and audience and teaches students to situate texts within relative social, cultural, and historical contexts.

Findlay's children's book illustration major provides a curriculum focused on skills specific to the field of illustration such as drawing, painting, printmaking, design and typography while also integrating coursework in children's literature.  Students work closely with art faculty and the Mazza Museum staff to gain knowledge of the publishing industry and develop their skills in sequential storytelling.

Program Highlights

  • Students in the children's book illustration major enjoy access to the Mazza Museum, the most diverse collection of original artwork by children's book illustrators in the world. Students attend annual Mazza conferences, interact with nationally recognized award-winning illustrators, complete internships with the museum, and volunteer with monthly educational events.
  • The Dudley and Mary Marks Lea Gallery provides opportunities for art management students to participate in the organization, preparation, and installation of shows. The Lea Gallery presents eight to ten exhibitions throughout the year, including works by students, faculty, and regional and national artists.  Students engage with exhibiting artists through gallery talks, classroom demonstrations, and public presentations.
  • Children's book illustration majors have the opportunity to visit nationally-recognized museums and galleries through study trips abroad, annual art program trips to New York City and Chicago, and class trips to museums such as the Toledo Museum of Art and the Detroit Institute of Art.

The goal of the Japanese program at the University of Findlay is to help you develop communication skills that will enable you to pursue a career in virtually any industry with Japanese as a second language. Findlay offers a bachelor's degree in Japanese, a bachelor's degree in multi-age Japanese (grades K-12) with a teaching license.

Experiential Learning
Our instruction strongly emphasizes the functional and practical use of the language as well as education about the Japanese culture. You will be immersed in the language with lessons both inside and outside of the classrooms.  

You will practice your Japanese language skills:

  • In class
  • On-campus activities with Japanese students
  • Activities with the Findlay area Japanese community members
  • Study abroad and internship programs in Japan (short visits or up to a year)

There are approximately 350 Japanese speakers in the Findlay area, and you will do various things with them. We also have strong ties with Japan. We are affiliated with some large educational institutions, several universities, companies, and language schools in Japan.   

Every semester, you will find some of our students studying and/or working in Japan. Some of our graduates work in Japan as well as in Japanese companies located in the US. Some of our graduates became teachers of Japanese in the US and teachers of English in Japan.

Learn about the relationship between computers and mathematics

An emphasis in mathematics prepares students for careers as computer scientists, mathematical programmers or software engineers. Graduates will serve as the inventors, theorists and researchers that create and troubleshoot new computer technologies and applications. They can also design new programming languages, develop virtual reality environments and advance ideas towards the relationship between computer technologies and humanity.
